Count the times the commentator says “stopped by McGrath”, “cleared by McGrath” or simply “McGrath...again”. Decent drinking game, that. No pun intended, of course.
Immense performance, of course. Literally didn't put a foot wrong - defensively.
It's nevertheless interesting to note one thing, which is quite apparent in that compilation – not intentional, but all the more interesting: Within those ten minutes or so, you can see three or four passes by Baresi – at least three of them are long, and precise. Whereas McGrath, great as he was, is clearly a bit hit and miss with his attempts at starting attacks.
No slight on the great man, of course – but just to put things into perspective. And, yes, I realize of course that the comparison here is feckin' Baresi and not some random “ball playing” mug. But in a draft context I think it's important to keep one's feet on the ground, as it were, when it comes to McGrath - because he's got everything going for him as the archetypal “underrated” man. And he is that – in the sense that he was simply better than a number of players whose names are more obvious.
But his claim to greatness lies in his “pure” defending: His anticipation, his tackling, his knack of having just the right burst of pace in him to get there in time, his aerial challenges, etc. As a ball player he wasn't anything special – I guess that's what I'm trying to say.
