Sverre Nypan | Norwegian media: Will do a PL tour in December

We shouldnt let this guy slip, could potentially be another Haaland situation.

Low risk, high reward kinda buy.

United fan, great talent and we've been scouting him for ages.

Hope this isn't another Bergvall situation where we don't even try for him.

I'm fairly confident that the subject was broached when we played them in the friendly during pre season. I'd imagine there's enough in the budget left from summer to conclude this transfer but I do think we will let him stay there until the end of the season.

Hopefully you're correct.

It seems in the last three four years, Norway have got excellent talents again. Not much clued on their history but the current team has to be amongst their best ever given the likes of Odegaard, Haaland, Sorloth, Nusa?

We are lacking in defensive talent.

The 90's are still far and away our most successful period. The team is talented now, but the results aren't there.

Will be gutted if we let this lad slip. Shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg and looks incredibly talented and grew up a United fan. Sign him in January and loan him out somewhere for the rest of the season so he can continue to develop.

Sounds like a plan

We won't get him. I guarantee it. It's too much on a silver platter for us to be this efficient getting a player who is a rabid Man Utd fan and relatively cheap. He'll go to Dortmund, Predictably look great, and we'll go in for him after two years, having to fight off City, who will probably want him as Savio's replacement.

That's the spirit

Excellent expansive passer, something we don't have in midfield currently. Would be a really good signing IMO, especially after missing out on Lucas Bergvall.

'The next odegaard'

'City will get him to replace Savio'

Pretty much sums up the knowledge around here.

1. The former quote has no relevance to me. If you want to reply to the originator of that post, feel free to do so. Alas, it shouldn't need be addressed by me, should it?
2. You laboured under the assumption that one-in, one-out always implies like-for-like. It does not, neither historically, nor contemporaneously. Savinho could be replaced as a qualitative squad member by someone not strictly this profile. This should be obvious.

He is nowhere near good enough to play for a club aspiring to do well in the Premier League....yet.

You dont buy him and have him on the bench for years until he is stagnating. The idea is to buy him and keep him at Rosenborg for another year to develop. Then you assess him in pre season and loan him out for a year to a decent and better league where he can get more game time than here and get used to a higher level. Maybe Eredivisie, or if he is better than thought, Bundesliga. Then you bring him back to the club and integrate him in the first team after a successful loan spell, and he can have an immediate impact in our side. Or another year at a PL club to get used to the physicality and then United first team.

Odegaard moved younger and was at the Castilla, but later had his loan spells at Vitesse, Heerenveen and Sociedad before Arsenal. That made him to a consistently good first team senior player.

What's your assessment of him?

Highly talented attacking midfielder, mature in the way he plays - but still a bit lightweight. Started the season quite poorly - but just like the rest of the team he has improved greatly over the last couple of months. He is a very good player - but is he better than Mount and Bruno - of course not. So he won't play for United if he join us - so if we do decide to sign him - we should loan him back to RBK

My point is - why would he want that ? He might just as well go to Holland and play regularly there for a few seasons, and then decide where he wants to play

Interesting. He looks really great in the highlights packages and one thing I thought I noticed was that his physical presence has grown hugely since last season when I would have first heard of him. Think its really important that we have.a succession plan for Bruno because I don't think Mount is it (injuries and lack of top end creativity) and Bruno's noticeably dropping off in physical and technical terms.

That's the thing. Many view is as a total miss when one of these guys ends up going to a Sporting/Ajax/etc and then we have to spend huge money a few years later to buy him.

It's not really true though. Often that's in the players interest -- to give him more control over his future and more negotiating leverage plus signing fees -- to stop at one of those clubs before signing with a big club. So there's not much we can do. Haaland and Bellingham made more money stopping at BVB than if they had just signed with City/Real directly.

I feel he would have a clear pathway into the first team given we're lightweight in nunbers in that position. My guess is we sign him Jan and he stays at Rosenborg until summer, comes on tour and then we reassess his place in the squad. Could be he goes on another loan for a season or gets slowly integrated into the first team squad, like Bergvall at Spurs.

It's all done to how we propose the move to him.

Some players do this. Look at Odegaard. And some dont.

If the club is huge and we convince him and he is a United fan, you can see why he would agree to it. Sometimes they cant say no, but you have to try and sell the project. Otherwise no talent would ever sign for a big club, but always for a stepping stone one until they truly make it.

Can we say he is a bit like a young version of Eriksen? If yes we definitely could need him.

Hands off, he's our Wirtz replacement!

Hands off, he's our Wirtz replacement!

Weren't you the guy waxing lyrical about Wirtz more than a year ago, basically claiming he was the next big thing in football or something?
I seem to remember quite a few argued hard against your assessment of him, but you were obviously correct.

Genuine question: What do you see in Nypan that makes you think he can replace Wirtz down the line?
That's some pretty big shoes to fill..

As a norwegian following the Eliteserien somewhat, I've watched Nypan a fair bit.
He does seem to have the overview and unselfishness you look for in a potential midfield great, and he is something of a goal and assist machine considering his age and position, but personally I can't see the very unnormal, obvious technical ability and creativity I saw in Ødegaard when he was a kid.
I'm not saying Nypan can't become a great player, he is only 17 and is developing, but it's not obvious to me that he has the potential to become a superstar in the way I immediately thought Ødegaard could become one the first time I saw him.

I also have high hopes for Bergvall at Spurs, I see him as something of a Swedish Ødegaard in the making, but that's obviously a different story. ;)

To be honest, I only saw 10-15 minutes of Nypan highlights so I might be completely wrong ;) But I found those highlights pretty impressive, especially considering his age. Many youngsters who stand out do so because of great physique or technical ability but he seems to have a great football IQ as well. His close control and first touch seem top notch just like his vision and that already makes for a deadly combination.

Anyway, I think it is highly unlikely he can replace Wirtz but then again, no player who would be willing to join Leverkusen could. Thing is, right now we don't even have a second player of his profile so we are completely screwed if he injures himself. Which is why many Leverkusen fans hope that we sign another AM in the winter and after Gruda and Doue moved clubs in the summer, Nypan is the most promisong option out of the remaining rumours.

Yeah, I mean, he does have some nice attributes: football iq, vision, nice weighted pass, quick feet, decent finishing (for his age), but what
the highlight vids doesn't show is how he goes missing in games, how he often holds on to the ball for too long and that his bad games are actually quite bad.
That's expected for most17 year olds I suppose, but I am guessing it's not what Leverkusen needs for a Wirtz backup.

Hard to tell with teenagers.
I recently listened to a podast where the Swedish u17 team that made it to the semis of the U17 WCH in 2013 was mentioned.
IIRC, 10 years later, not a single of the players in the squad had become stars. None of them are currently even in the Swedish national team.
I think 3 made it to become national team players however, but for much smaller nations than Sweden.

So yeah, hard to predict with 17 year olds.

Money is really the only reason, but it seems to work for Brighton and Chelsea among others. Loan him out and the team in Holland, Germany or wherever pays a good chunk of the salary and United pay the rest and hopefully we have our next #10 for a reasonable overall expenditure.

Absolutely! I don't doubt for a second that he is still very raw when you say so and there are no guarantees he'll become a top player. Thing is, we are in such need for a second player who thrives in tight spaces that I'd still take him immediately. Right now, our alternatives are a) Terrier who is more of a striker, b) Adli whose touch lets him down more often than not when under pressure and c) Hofmann who is purely a pass and go type of player with almost zero dribbling ability. Ideally, we'd sign a 20-22 year old who is already an improvement but also has a high ceiling so he can take over Wirtz' spot in a year or two but I'm not sure such a player is attainable for us.
