Summer Transfer Window 2017

Love how we have to hear 'rumours' to feel relaxed so we can put them in our imaginary XI's and then decide we will now finish in such and such position come May.

In reality most of the rumours are utter bullshit, a signing could be annonced at any second within the next week so what's the point on looking at current line-ups as though it's definitely next years XI, and we have no idea how anyone is going to improve/decline stay/leave or just perform in general next season so asserting our final league position now is utterly ridiculous. Stop the panic and be patient.

I guess I am on an internet forum and this kind of stuff passes the hours but still...it really is silly season.

Good post.

Good stuff, hopefully posters will read this and take it in entirely. Unfortunately though, it will fall on deaf ears, for sure.

I really think it's the FIFA effect (the video game), but few admit it, as they don't want to sound too ignorant, instead stating that they've "seen this and that player a lot in this and that league, he's good/shite" – because the player has good/shite stats in FIFA. Imaginary starting lineups indeed… the FIFA Ultimate Team fan bhoys love this kind of stuff almost as much as their favorite player getting the "correct" football boots in the video game, matching the player's cleats in real life.

Not sure you can claim any credibility when using the term 'cleats' unless you're USA Soccer Guy, though ;)

The FIFA effect is very real on this forum.

The FIFA effect is very real on this forum.

And lookism! A concept still alive and well applied in society in general. Can't get more vivid than within the footballing world and its supporters.

Just as an example with no relevance otherwise: take Lindelöf, a new player we easily can relate to, considering his recent transfer.

The majority of our posters had/still have no clue of who Lindelöf is or what he's good at on the pitch. They do however like Lindelöf's persona, face and general appearance and draw the conclusion that he's our new Vidic because he's caucasian, has brown-blonde hair and blue eyes. Of course, he looks nothing like Vidic whatsoever, and he plays even less like Vidic did, but that's irrelevant because they like what they see, literally, and hey, give him the #15 and he's definitely the new Vidic. :wenger:

Regarding FIFA; for those who play it and enjoy it yet are intelligent enough to not draw too many conclusions to real life – do a little mini-acid test on the next player being talked up or dismissed, and check out their stats in the game to confirm or disconfirm your theories as to why a poster likes or dislikes a certain player, at any given time. Add a dash of appearance factors to act as tie-breakers, and cross-reference it with their arguments and you'll quickly snuff out the bullshit.

We are not being linked with a single player that remotely excites me in the press currently.

Agreed. There's something about this summer window that makes it severely underwhelming. Even in the Moyes fiasco year we were linked to exciting players like Thiago, Fabergas and Bale.

We didn't get any of them. So being linked meant nothing in the end. It was just like someone teasing us.

Until we heard some better rumours, we actually look like this

ICTQ9AN.jpg

Even if we look at the best case scenario from the players we are consistently linked with it doesn't look great.

So now we know we had nothing lined up just waiting for the window to open. And this 'transfer window isn't open yet' excuse can finally die even though we signed a player long before it was open, although surely to be replaced by 'its only july'. Pre-season is about to start and all our strongest links have hit a brick wall. Will Ed flash the cash to get things done before we fly out or will he push it to the end of the window? Will we try to rely on just Morata and Perisic for our extra goals? All talk of both Morata and Bellotti has dried up and James rumours only coming from abroad with Talisca rumours quashed, suggest we will at the least start the pre-season with at most Morata, and maybe Perisic. Matic looks to be nearer end of window if at all, while we might miss out on Fabinho by waiting too long. At the same time we have yet to complete a sale with only Januzaj bid for. Ed needs to get things moving.

Do we scout players in other areas or just Europe? Besides Chicarito who was the last player we signed that came from South America for instance? I'm not talking about a player who already moved to Europe or England i.e. Valencia but someone that moved direct to us. The twins I know but who else? It's pretty rare.

It is very strange that theres almost no United news for a day now. Dont know if thats a good sign or a bad one.

Kinda nitpicky I guess, but Mexico is in North America. But, it means you'd have to go back farther than Chicharito in your search.

Edit: Guillermo Varela was recruited out of Penarol in Uruguay. Matthew Olusunde was recruited out of New York Red Bulls Academy in New Jersey.

Anyone else just bored of this window already? not talking about United's transfers but just in general. Compared to the NBA where everyone has gone fecking nuts this off season trying to acquire multiple stars, it's been very slow on all fronts. I know there were a few mini-sagas around CR7, Donnaruma, Conte ect and there's still a ways to go yet, it just feels so dead and completely lacking the usual post-season buzz.

West Brom have just signed Jay Rodriguez from Southampton, for £12m.

Errrmm...

We're reportedly targetting another CB despite already having numerous options there. We're also reportedly targetting Perisic. If true, might this be a sign that Mournhio wants to transition us to a back 3?

I haven't paid much attention other than the obvious links. I know next to nothing about Lindelöf, and I found it is really boring trying to youtube-scout a defender. I do rate Morata, however, and think he'd be a hit. I've got a strong feeling we'll see a couple of surprise signings like Bailly, which makes this a very interesting season for me. Have to trust that Mourinho knows what he wants. We're definitely signing three more players imo.

So depressing it's not even funny.

I'm sure Jose, as would many of us would prefer to have all our signings done before we leave for the US next week. I think, or much rather hope that we start to see some movement this week or I think Jose will start to get a little bit pee'd.

I really hope Shaw will be starting instead of Blind. We need him to start firing on all cylinders!

If you add Perisic instead of Rashford i think you will have our transfer window.
How is Shaw going to start on all cylinders if he's going to be still injured in pre-season, though?

Arsenal getting Lacazette for a good price compared to some of the prices being quoted for our targets (Perisic!).

Yep agree we could complete 2 transfers in a day then people will be saying Ed take your time and get the last one correct. Truth being we just need to trust Jose and Ed and I'm glad the press don't have a clue.

I expect some movement this week - think we fly off to US next week

Matic isn't a great choice for me - the other way to look at it is no more Fellaini at 10 in big games

Perisic - haven't watched him much at all - stats are better than current wide players (Rashford and Martial are both probably better at 9 anyway) would love to see us buy a more unpredictable wide player - depending on transfers and Coman's development I wonder could you tempt someone like Robben

Morata - does he have it in him to score 30 goals - he looks sharp when he plays and Jose knows the player well so maybe he can really come on at United

there's bound to be a signing out of nowhere too - it's a long window

Some of you need to chill out. No one has made many signings yet apart from Everton.

It's the calm before the storm. Ed and Jose will be on the phone today make no mistake about it.

You mean like all our targets being very difficult to negotiate? We've signed one player already which is more than a lot of clubs.
are you purposely leaving out the "no new rumours" part just so you can have a go?

i don't care if the signings aren't done by the time the plane leaves. I'd like to know that targets selected in March are at least progressing by mid-july. I only tentatively hope the signings come quickly.
