Summer Transfer Window 2017

Buying central/defensive midfielder raises lots of questions for me.
Presuming that pogba and herrera will be always starters and pogba will not play number 10 then we have interesting situation.
Mourinho likes to change between 433 and 4231 especially in home matches where we play with miki or mata on no10 position.
So new midfielder will be often on the bench? That is why i think that we will buy more squad rotation player for that position , not some big( and expensive) name.

Big pressumption

I am going to be bold here but I don't think that Herrera warrants to always be a starter. I think we need a step up in quality to be honest.

For me it is either one of the following:

-Herrera becomes the DM and we sign a quality midfielder with some more attacking quality to play with Pogba up top (examples are Naingolan, Keita, Sanches)

- We get a quality DM to partner pogba and let them operate behind a 10. Currently for the 10 would have to be Mkhitaryan or Mata or someone new and quality DM I'am thinking off Fabinho, N'zonzi or Diawara (Matic and Dier are not good enough imo) but then Herrera won't be automatic starter anymore

I didn't want to pollute the twitter thread so thought this would be a good place to vent - it annoys me when fans see a player linked with another club and come out with "We should be all over this" or "What's Jose playing at, why aren't we signing this guy?!" etc

Football doesn't work like that. We don't click our fingers and get in whatever player we want.

There are so many variables involved. Does the manager think he will fit in his system? Does the player have the mentality to play at Man Utd? Does the player even prefer a move to England and more specifically, Manchester?

I wish people would engage their brains from time to time.

So true.

Obviously we can't sign everyone. Nor is signing a player JUST to keep a rival from getting him a good idea (you just end up with a squad full of players you did not want in the first place).

Other teams have always and will always sign good/great players. Players who might have fit in at United, but then again United will sign players who will have been great fits at other clubs, it works both ways.

Unless Mourinho is playing a game I think we'll be signing Matic and one other. For ages I thought it was Perisic, but maybe the folk on here are right and he's a smokescreen.

If Rojo, Shaw and Young are out until towards the end of the year, I wouldn't expect too many, if any more outgoings from the first team squad.

Shocked to hear Rojo, Shaw and Young are out for the long term. I think we are definitely 3/4 light from mounting a serious title challenge.

I think there is a major issue at RB-LB now. Tony V played too many games last season I think we need a better RB. I didn't think we would need a LB but Luke Shaw appears to be going down the Phil Jones route in that he seems to be made of glass.

The most important: Defensive midfielder and a RIGHT winger. (not left.) We have too many no.10's playing on the right of which none are proper wide men. I'd love Dembele or Lemar, and Fabinho in the middle as a CDM.

I think we are just gonn a have to hope that our current attackers improve a lot as we are unlikely to get in the calibre of players we need.

I can't see much more than a slug for a top four and proving a tough side to beat in the cups.

Lindelof, Lukaku, Matic, Perisic. That's what CL football gets us? I'd dread to see the Europe League list. Ironically this transfer window will probably mean EL football next season. Such a wasted opportunity. Going to be so many more draws this season with an even uglier more direct style of play. Never been so pessimistic going into a season before. Just hope Ed can pull some surprises out of the bag and that those who flopped last season can bounce back this season.

The names alone don't get you anything. Its how they all collectively play together that counts.

We looked less than the sum of our parts last season. Might take a while adjusting our play to Lukaku. Think Mhki will be key to success/failure of our season. We need him at his peak output. And we need to practice shooting big time.

I'm still concerned about the goals. We need more movement and cut and thrust in the final third. Lukaku can certainly help with that, as can Zlatan after he's fit again.

I do hope Zlatan stays, he was the highlight of last season for me and we will need him in the business end of the season. I'm just concerned that there was no plan B to Griezmann and no LB planned. Expected players like Talisca or James, Tierney or Mendy. These four don't really fix the glaring weaknesses of last season.

Zlatan to be no 10 behind Lukaku if he stays then?

that's a strange post

Have you watched Lindelof regularly - from what I've read he has been tipped to be a brilliant partner for Bailly

Lukaku has a super scoring record and is still relatively very young and developing

as for Perisic - it's not a sexy signing like some but I've seen his directness and crossing ability he looks like he could be a good addition

Matic - well he's a player Jose knows well and has certain qualities which can free up Herrera and Pogba as well as meaning Fellaini will start less of the big games

it's widely known we had Griezeman lined up too until their transfer ban

who else would you have realistically gone for instead of these players you find underwhelming

I pointed some out in previous post.

I also see a big role for Peirerararararia, or however you spell his name, this season. Which may reduce our need for an attacking midfielder. Hererererara - Pogba - Perierererererarara midfield.

It all seems to have gone very quiet since we signed Lukaku - all we're hearing is that we are desperate to sign Matic / Dier and Perisic but that their clubs don't want to sell. I have to hope that those players are just smokescreen and that Ed is working on the real targets in the background.

If we don't get Matic or Dier I think Jose will play Herrera as DM with Pogba and Pereira ahead of him. Tbh I think this would work very well - I rate Herrera very highly defensively and Pereira would score and create more than Herrera.

Fellaini would 100% play ahead of Pereira mate.

The thing with Griezmann is whether or not we think we get him next summer. If we think we do and the price will be high, then it is unlikely we throw a bunch of money this window at another player who we will replace next summer.

Not a good thing but it might be the reality we are dealing with.

Depends on the tactical necessities of the game. Fellaini isn't an ever-present player but a tactical option. Think Pereira will be given an opportunity to stake a place as this should be his break out season.

Oh I agree. But expected a cheap punt on Talisca or maybe a one year loan deal with him or James.

Was thinking on the drive home today about our completed signings and the rumored targets. We signed a defender and a striker, two positions we needed with out a doubt. We also know Jose wants a DM and a LW. I think the reason we haven't signed anyone yet is due to Jose wanting to assess the current squad with a few matches under their belt as he may want to tweak his targets a bit.

...or not since he gave Ed "the list" months ago.

Just some random thoughts to justify our lack of signings in those positions. FFS Ed, get your finger out.

Need Scotty McTominay to have a big term

Wonder personally who is on the attacking midfielder list alongside Perisic? Can't even think of someone that it could be

With Morata heading to Chelsea, there goes a player who I thought we might have a chance to wear the no.7 shirt and pair up with Lukaku up-front next season. Always thought that Jose wanted the both of them, especially judging from the comments he made about Morata. Makes me wonder which player can we get now who can fill the our hallowed no.7 shirt - off the top of my head, I can only think of "realistically" are Sanchez and Dembele. Anyone else?

If Sanchez is available he should be the player we go all in for. Who knows what's been agreed with Griezmann though. Perhaps he's willing to move in January or next summer. Zlatan's rumored January return is most likely going to put the breaks on another attacking player coming in this window if we don't sign Perisic. Rashford, Lingard, Martial, and Mkytaryan all played on the left last season and we may end up with the same this season.
On another note, I think we'll see less good players moving to China with their 100% tax laws on transfers.

Am i the only one worried about the lack of activity/rumours after we signed Lukaku?
We need atleast one more player, preferably a dm, but should also still be in for lb and someone on the wing.
Chop chop Woody woodpecker!

We are staring down the barrel of this;

If we can fill in that empty DM spot and scrape top 4 we can focus on sorting the attack out next summer and maybe LB as well, as it looks like we are stalling on that because Shaw is English.

Yes, it's not great.

We have a pretty strong spine though:

Lukaku will bang in goals.
Two superb midfielders in Herrera and Pogba.
Bailly is a big talent.
King DDG.

It's definitely not going to be the summer I expected. Missing out on Griezmann was game-over for our chances of significantly improving through recruitment.

Hopefully Rashfor, Martial and Miki improve.

I think Shaw will work out. He has talent anyway.

It baffles me why Mourinho or the board don't just see Sanchez as a good Griezmann alternative! He offers the same if not more than him.

I'm sure they do but he's not attainable for us, it seems. Only explanation.

United do not need another right footed winger/forward. They are lopsided enough as it is, even before contemplating the sort of figure Arsenal would demand to let him go to a rival.

I'd prefer Dalbert and N'Zonzi to Perisic and Matic, it would cost less as well.

He's more of a full back/wing back isn't he?

Yes. I just don't trust Shaw to stay fit and I don't think Darmian is good enough there, even if he was done well towards the end of the season.

It gets on my nerves that whenever anyone suggests us buying a world class player (or anyone better than Matic or Perisic) they are almost mocked, with the response that "they are just not available"!!

Well, now it turns out that Neymar probably is available, maybe Sanchez too. Who know who else of that calibre really is available?

Perisic and Matic?!!? Come on Ed - deliver on your boasts that we can do things that no other club can dream of. Time to sh*t or get off the pot.

I don't think this team is there yet in regards to a title challenge.
Need to find 25+ league goals from somewhere.#

I'd be happy with Matic/Perisic now but don't think it'll be enough for a title challenge but who knows, If Matic replicates his form from Mourhinos league winning side then maybe but the goal scoring will still be an issue.

Noone in for our players?
Was expecting more to be sold this summer.
