Television Succession

Jeremy Strong was the MVP for me. Just a perfect mix of “oh shit my dad is dead” and “oh shit this man who has made me life utter misery is dead” throughout. Like he never knew whether to mourn or celebrate and in the end seemed to be doing a really weird mix of both on the boat deck.

The way they just reverted back to being helpless kids was great. And watching the slow realisation on Kendall’s face as they realise the call is serious.

Yeah. Doesn’t matter what the context is, your parent dying is going to feck you up and they played it so well. The feels, man. Like you loathe these characters at the best of times yet I was desperately sorry for them whilst this happened.

He was fantastic don’t get me wrong but Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook were on another level for me.

It reminded me of the scene in Tuscany in S3 where Kendall broke down sitting in the dirt telling them about the waiter and the car crash, and Shiv & Roman were consoling him (kind of), just phenomenal acting from all of them.

You could probably pick and choose. Shiv is such a cnut though that I refuse to pick her  even in that episode the way she treated Tom.

Oh yea she’s a horrible cuntmuscle but just having such hatred for her shows that the acting is incredible!

Haven’t read all the posts here about S04 E03 so apologies if it’s already been mentioned but the foreshadowing of Shiv wearing ‘funeral attire’ to a wedding was a gloriously subtle inclusion in hindsight. Mentioned it to my wife immediately when I saw her dressed in black that it looked out of place for a wedding, little did we know…

Hi didn't really die mate.

I meant as in you get the same information the kids do. It’s filtered through with confusing updates and they’re powerless asking the same questions over and over whilst Tom just repeats what’s going on. The slow realisation happens at the same time for them and the audience, especially with it just not showing Logan for the majority of it. So as you’re watching it you’re trying to work out what’s going on just like they are.

It reminded me a bit of when my Grandad died and my uncle was with the paramedics whilst on the phone to my mum and I was next to my mum trying to work out what was happening and if he was ok. Just felt very real!

First, sorry to hear about your experience. I agree that it was very realistically done, and that usually can trigger certain memories, however I still think the one episode of Buffy that was mentioned here depicted this in a hauntingly realistically manner. It put me in a very weird state when I watched it.

Not seen the Buffy episode but seen some people talking about it as one of the best to do that kind of thing yeah.

Nah. The episode when directly set against their father eviscerating them as ‘Not serious people’ in the previous, told a story.

They’re dumb as shit rich kids with daddy issues. That’s the whole show. Any front-foot move from the kids was always torn to pieces by a father that didn’t respect them in any way, shape or form. They spend their entire lives trying to get Love from a man that’s incapable of it.

The whole show is devoid of love. It’s transactional toxicity at every turn. When the news breaks, they don’t treat each other kindly. They instantly move to posturing and working angles. The boys don’t run to get Shiv, nobody gives a Fcuk about Conor. There’s no unity or care for each other.

Great episode in a brilliant show. Hoping that all the kids end up on the wrong side of everything, yet again.

You're not wrong, in that there is definitely an element of this going on, but I think you're over-analysing it. Judging by what the actors and creators have said about the episode.

Have to agree. Really demonstrated what kind of people the kids are.

This show is so fecking good. The acting and writing is phenomenal

Mr Robot - Proxy Authentication Required is also definitely up there as one of the best episodes of TV.
Ashamed to admit I've never watched Mr Robot...

Surely we are all thinking: where the hell does the rest of the season go without Logan? I was expecting his demise near the end, not 3 fecking episodes in!

You have to get over the hump of the show, around the beginning / middle of the second season iirc. I've tried three times to get over it, but I just don't make it. Show just dries up for me.

We're finally being promised what the title of the show is selling. Someone has to ascend to the top.

The second season is hard work for the first half, but picks up massively after that. I gave up too first time round but was glad I went back to it.

Season three and four are GOAT tier TV.

You need to get past that point, it’s honestly so bloody good.

Funnily enough I messaged a mate just now about it, and he said the exact same thing. Getting a story on what this was all supposed to be about
But I don't get the feeling like much of the show was filler, everything seems paced out well. The fact that we are getting 75ish% of the final season geared to this event makes me excited for the saga to unfold.

Damn you. I'm gonna have to give it another whirl.

That's what excites me too. For them to kill off the main character this early on means there is so much more juice in this.

He wasn't the main character, was he? Just one of many. At a guess I'd say Kendell is the one who got the most screen time throughout the series overall. Then Tom, Shiv, Roman, all big characters too. Logan was probably more the "catalyst" who made them all do the crazy shit they did.

I like that they did it now and the remaining seven episodes will probably be them fighting over the company as opposed to another entire season of them fighting over Logan!

Bizarrely I am in the exact same boat.

Agree. I’d probably consider Kendall the main character. More than anybody else anyway

There was an interview with Brian Cox where he said this

Describing Logan's final scene in the show, the actor added: "He ends on a high, you know, he really does."

Somebody on Reddit posted a collage of each episode’s final shots up to S04E03 and 80% of them are either Logan or Kendall. The show has always been about them. Connor, Shiv and Roman are bit-part players who just happen to get plenty of screen time due to the serial nature of the show; had this been a two-hour movie, we’d have barely seen them in the grand scheme of things.

Absolutely no way are Shiv and Roman bit part players like Connor. I'd say those two, and Tom, are very, very central to the overall story, whereas Connor and Greg are more peripheral characters who are generally there mostly for a laugh.

Incredible TV.

Me and my sisters got a similar phone call 6 months ago and to see the range of reactions and emotions on the show was so powerful and relatable.

I love that it's just an ordinary day of Logan and the next thing we know he has passed. No big on screen drama to reflect the importance of the character. And a showing that it creeps up on absolutely everyone regardless of wealth or standing and can happen at a moments notice.

I'm sure most people didn't even believe he was dead until we saw the head. Its not plot armour as somebody else said but the fact that the show has convinced us that this man has no boundaries and could potentially even fake being at deaths door if he got some tactical advantage out of it.

Amazing acting and 30 minute cut was incredible. That episode will be referenced and remembered for years. Bold decision to kill him off this early but I'm convinced it'll pay off.

Easily the best tragedy show for me. Best show since Mad Men and Breaking Bad ended.
