Television Succession

That latest episode. Wow.
The best of this season and perhaps one of the best ever in Succession.

Overall plot this season has been shit but this episode was amazing. Tom deserves an Emmy for this season

I think this season hasn't really moved the plot forward all that much but its just had so many top top quality episodes.

I am full on Team Feck Roman now. Kendall is a mess, but he's a human being. Roman is just an evil little shit.

It was one of those episodes where you moved loyalties from feck Ken to feck Roman.

First 45 mins, I was hoping Ken gets destroyed. Last 15 mins, I was hoping the same for Roman

The most intriguing line of the entire episode for me was Ken telling Roman, "You're not a real person." Did Ken just make Roman NRPI in his mind? :nervous: This phrase has sinister connotations in the show so far and I can't imagine it being a throwaway line.

Also I've been critical of the plot not moving forward this season but I think the last 5 mins of this episode things did happen. It seemed Shiv has had enough of Roman and Logan, and Kendall seemed to have a determined rather than dejected look at the end. Also, the buzzcut and his attitude in the promo of the next episode seem to suggest we may finally be getting the Kendall from the Season 2 finale.

That was an epic episode. Succession at its very best. It always works best when they’re squabbling in extravagant circumstances.

the vagina thing was hilarious.

Roman did seem extra mean, usually he knows when to not go too far but that was really rough

His Dad is enabling him. He’s a sociopath and he’s usually cut in his tracks but Logan seems to have taken a shine to him recently and it’s bringing the worst out in him.

Ive got a horrible feeling they’re going to kill Greg off.

Yeah fair. Kendell is probably the most likeable of them now but even that’s a stretch. He’s at least a bit more human.
Think if anyone is likely to go it’s Kendell. He doesn’t really have anywhere to go from here, does he? Unless maybe Shiv does join his side.

Can’t see them killing Greg. Him and dynamic is too important.

Tom was good but Roman has been great last couple of episodes. That conversation with the fascist H last episode and the stuff this time out, it's how I imagine a rich spoilt cnut to behave and he's pulling it off perfectly.

Has been a great season, these guys were pretty cold in terms of their own family but they have cranked it up to another level this season and brought out some truly repulsive shite especially from both Ken and Rome. The highlight at the end of the season should be how despite being knee deep into sinister shite that got exposed and having a mutiny inside their own family, none of them get a scratch while every part of the society they are involved in gets infinitely more fecked.

Surely I remember there being someone named 'Elon' on his guest list.
Yup there was definitely an Elon on the guest list.
Could've been Elon Smith.

Yeah that makes sense.

Killing anyone off seems a bit drastic though given the fact that the heat seems to be dying down. Plus Greg is essentially Tom's emotional support animal, he needs him as a punching bag to deflect all the shit he gets off the genuinely important people.

Kendall's a loser too, the episode clearly showed how he treats his employees, undertakes grandiose but pointless projects, and he's an entitled little feck. His speech to Gregg applies to him 10x. And the stupid c@ckface is worth $2Bn+

Before this season started, I was quite sure that they will kill off Logan by the end of the season. If I was a betting man, I'd still put my money on it, but now it wouldn't surprise me if Kendall ends up taking his own life. But surely one of them has to go at the end of the season because otherwise we are stuck in a repetitive cycle.

It's funny that I'm only reading this now, a week and 2 episodes later, because at the end of the latest episode, when Kendall is peering over the balcony with the blanket wrapped around him, I was totally convinced he was about to chuck himself off.

Where did Roman being genuinely nasty suddenly come from?

Roman is getting used by his dad and the potential partners. He's a growing asshat the closer he gets to a deal, but he's so far off and needs others. Getting bigged up for a huge fall.

Ken was extremely, extremely vulnerable towards the end of the episode and very telling when Shiv and Roman asked who isn't here and showed how hollow his life is.

Agree with the season plot...it's been poor, but as individual episodes, they've been really good.

Has Succession ever had much by way of plot? There’s only so much meat on the bones of rich kids screwing each other over to make more money. Surely everybody watches it for the snappy dialogue, incredible theme tune and Greg.

Yeah. Never really cared too much about the plot. It's just a dark humorous take on the filth that goes inside wealthy families that own massive corporations not really a plot driven script. I'm not really surprised that they start and end subplots very quickly. Pretty enjoyable that way.

Also I feel this show is much better when binged rather than one episode a week. I binged first 5 of this season and the writing felt far tighter and things correlated with each other much better. Was planning to watch it that way but after that third episode I had to get every episode asap.

He's always been genuinely nasty though. Remember the first episode and tearing that cheque in front of the kid. Even Logan thought that was a bit much judging by how he went to shake the kid's hand later.

I think Roman is one of those people who gets when others are crossing the line (hence his objections to Logan suggesting Ken as the sacrifice and his refusal to sign Shiv's letter) but doesn't recognize when he himself crosses the line.

At the end of this episode I was genuinely rooting for Kendall to deck him. Fantastic acting by Kieran Culkin.

this season has been shit, though the second to last episode was decent. Plot is going nowehre
I think shit is a complete overstatement as when I watch it I still find it incredibly engrossing and enjoyable because it's so well written and acted, but the overall plot of the show has been quite poor. Can't put my finger on it but it lacks the magic of the first two seasons, maybe the format is a bit stale or maybe the fact that at times it looks like it's been hindered by filming during Covid, it doesn't feel like quite the same show.

I really think they need to shake things up at the end of the season, they can't continue with Logan in charge and the kids squabbling to take power off him or bend to his well.

For me Roman has a compulsion to sarcastically comment or joke about everything that's happening in front of him in the most direct and inappropriate way. And sometimes that goes too far or hits too many nerves, e.g. when he got hit by his father or the scene with the kid you mentioned. However joking about the kid's broken dream was nasty, but I took it more as generally being out of touch with regular people and that whole "NRPI" attitude, rather than hurting the kid just to hurt him.
But towards the end of last episode it seemed like he was nasty just to be nasty and outside of his compulsive jokes, too. As you have mentioned he was also the one to try and make sure certain lines weren't crossed within the family and the one who tried to keep in touch with ken after the failed boardroom coup and the one who picked him up from a drug house, yet last episode he's almost bragging about going after Ken's children, even though the latter appears to have lost his leverage for the moment.

I'd say that overall plot is both a bit rehashed (Ken vs the family) and they fast forward through it in (much) broad(er) strokes (than S1/2): the hostile takeover and the investigation were both plots that could (maybe should) have filled an entire season if properly told, yet they wrapped them up within five minutes mid season by Sandy having a stroke and Ken's evidence coming up short. Then they they spend half an episode on POTUS (again, something that might merit an entire season). The real plot are the family dynamics, everything else is just there to probe the characters from a different angle.

Yeah there's always a looming shareholders meeting or a vote that will seem them ousted from their own company. Its basically just Arrested Development done seriously and now even Shiv has her own chicken dance.

The nastiness has always been there. But now he's drunk on small business successes and being egged on by his father's approval.

We've all taken things too far when we've got a bit over-excited. In the case of Roman, there's a little bit of extra psychopathy to push it over the edge.

Yeah the references to earlier seasons are correct. And he's always been extra nasty with Shiv which just seems to go up every episode and is pretty disturbing at this point.

Weakest episode of the season for me. I found myself for the first time since the show started drifting off. I liked the scene with Kendall, Roman, and Shiv at the end where it seemed like it was really going to boil over. Very well written and well-acted. It had real tension about it as it was the first time where I actually thought things were going to get violent and physical. I mean, it kind of did with Roman pushing Ken down.

But the rest of the episode didn’t hold my interest at all. There were some amusing lines but, and I never thought I would say this, the writing felt a little too cute at times. To be fair, I think Succession has always flirted with being slightly over the top with its florid style of writing, but it typically works for the show. This was the first time (and it has happened a few times in this season) where it does come off as too clever by half.

In the previous seasons, I found there to be a good balance, but it’s been amped up in season 3. I’m still enjoying it, of course, but it’s the first time I’ve actually noticed it being so prominent.

I can get the overall criticism of this season but that was easily the best episode, and a great self contained episode.

You think? Prior seasons had more fluidity and intertwined plots - acquisitions, hostile takeovers, corporate malfeasance, boardroom alliances and betrayals, DOJ investigations, fallout from substance abuse, an MBS style hostage situation, Shiv's political angle, Marcia etc.

Right now it feels like nothing is really happening. DOJ investigation was just killed. The political angle not explored. Characters like Gerri, Stewy, Frank, Carl, Sandy are barely existant. Instead we get Dasha from Red Scare Podcast

The dialogue is top notch per usual, the scenes filmed around Hudson Yards are beautiful, but plot feels on an endless recycle
