Television Succession

Last two episodes have been a bit meh considering their standards.

I loved yesterdays episode. Feel like it’s setting up nicely for the second half of the season. Roman’s call with the President and Logan chastising Greg for asking where he was going we’re both great moments.

I liked when Logan said only he gets to be nasty to Karl.

I could watch an entire episode of pissmad Logan tbf.

I thought the 4th episode with Brody was top-notch. But yeah this last one felt a bit underwhelming. After building up for so long for the shareholder vote, we never even got the vote.

Also, I don't get where they are heading with Kendall now, they've made it clear he's not actually capable of taking on Logan. I always thought the show was all about the "Succession" of Kendall to the throne and him becoming like Logan, and finally displacing him in an act that Logan will respect (as he wants someone who's a killer to replace him). But I don't see how they go there from where Kendall is now.

But that's ok, that's how these things usually go. People settle.

The main takeaway for me was Ken's delusions that again got highlighted. After calling himself puppet master the whole time he ended up knowing no one actually gives a shit about him and why Logan aside from S2 finale has never taken him seriously. He's just talk and that's it. And in fact all the other kids, who shat themselves when Logan went AWOL, and for Shiv to actually have taken a big call at the time, probably hints at her becoming what Kendall thinks he is.

I also feel the whole 'girls count double now' theme this season has been pretty interesting. Logan went with Gerri as CEO, Shiv as Director and Ken also wanted Shiv. Both also tussled for Lisa to represent them. It kinda feels like they are stressing that they only care about woman for optics and don't really give a shit otherwise.

Other than that, good comic relief which I think was the main intention of the episode. Always love watching fat old people trying to walk fast. The whole shithousery on the stage was pretty hilarious.

I think my main issue is that we are now halfway through the season but it feels like we are still at the same point as we were at the start of the season.

Kendall is in opposition to Logan, but he doesn't exactly know how he's going to go about it. Shiv wants a bigger role but doesn't know if her dad trusts her or is just playing her. Roman has genuine affection for Gerri and feels he could rise with her but we don't know if he's actually up to it.

All these points were highlighted by the last episode because it was built as a tipping point and you felt there would be some changes, someone will make a move and then the final 4 episodes will deal with the repurcussions. But nothing really changed in the grand scheme of things. And while the dialogue and acting is top notch as always, I hope the story actually moves forward in the remaining episodes this season, otherwise this risks becoming like Silicon Valley. Where they would end up at the same point at the end of every season, with Kendall here being a slightly more sinister and deranged version of Richard.

Check the promo for the next episode.

Would be pretty funny if somehow Connor ended up as President after them all seeing him as a complete feckwit
Same here. Something on similar lines if not exactly that will be fun. Not like this is some serious show in terms of the plot, it's a usual HBO dramedy where the plot usually only exists in name, so it would be fine if it goes into some sort of parody timeline.

Liked the episode overall. One of the better ones this season even if they’ve done the whole Logan is sick and we need to make a decision angle before.

The phrase Pissmad cracked me up  as did the shithousery on the stage fecking each other over. And also the imaginary cat in the bag.

Also why was Sandy so fecked? They didn’t mention that before did they?

Dont think anyone knows yet. They joked that they started the rumour it was syphilis.

Also it's weird that they had built up Sandy and Stewy as threats whole season only for them to have sudden problems in episode 5 and they were ready to make a deal.

Did they hint it earlier in the season that they were having some issues?

Loved that episode.
It was very good. My only gripe is Logan insisting on a photo next to his chosen candidate. Considering the quid pro quo at the base of their relationship there is no way they’d be publicly backing him like that. Pulling the strings in the background only.

Tom was brilliant in this episode. He deserves some sort of recognition.

Just to make sure I understood..

They decided to back the next Hitler for Presidency which pissed off Shiv?

That was great. Much better than the last episode. Tom was fantastic.

“I heard they wipe their ass on your pillow”

Yep, this entire season is setting up a pissed off Shiv from what I see

Ken seems a bit too delusional to me, like in earlier seasons he seemed to be a pretty good/calm strategist, manipulating his siblings into making him CEO, solving the company's massive loan problem, all but successfully pulling of the first coup against his father only to be just barely thwarted by a terrorist threat, all but successfully pulling off a hostile takeover while doing coke, only to be thwarted at the last minute by that car accident, perfectly playing everyone at Vaulter while gutting them, "winning" his senate deposition against the Dem presidential candidate, and it seems like this time they are rushing through his process of disintegration too quickly: for example it would have felt more organic to me if he realized his evidence was thin, then talked to Tom to make up for it and then got sent spinning out of control by that savage burn at the end of their chat and then did his transparent and desperate ramble at the investigators and fired his superstar lawyer and that "I'm the puppet master" stuff last ep.

Totally agree. As I mentioned in the thread previously, I honestly don't understand where they are going with Kendall. I'm sure they have something planned but from a dangerous threat at the start of the season who had Logan reeling, he's gone to a mild nuisance who seems secondary to the plot in the last couple of episodes.

While never a killer, he was always portrayed as a competent executive, but this season he's behaved more like you would expect from Connor if he was doing a power grab.

I have a feeling it’s going to end up with Shiv and Tom deciding to flip to Kendall’s side after they realise that A. Shiv will never be taken seriously by the misogynistic cnut and B. Tom doesn’t want to go to jail. Then, Kendall will realise that they have a quid pro quo in place so all these investigations are pointless anyway and his Dad has basically won so he will flip back over to his side leaving Shiv and Tom on the outside.

Matthew McFayden is a great actor. He goes from creepy to dickhead to sympathetic so well. He was excellent in Quiz too.

What side though? Like what exactly is he planning? Because we have heard nothing of his plan so far. Apparently, it's just sending his dad to jail and getting immunity. Great, but even if that happens the shareholders will need to vote on him as CEO which won't really happen. Karolina pretty much spelled it out for him in 2 mins in the first episode in his "righteous vehicle" that his plan can't really work.

So what will Shiv gain siding with Kendall, especially now they already have a deal with Sandy/Stewey. If anything Kendall now needs to come over to Shiv's side once she breaks away from Logan.

That would be the realistic scenario anyway, but since its a TV show I'm guessing they'll pull some hijinks to give Kendall a win.

I saw the photo as more of a personal keepsake for Logan to hang in his gallery with all the other presidents-to-be he's anointed.

Also, Rom and the fascist (Menken?) look nailed on to bang, and I'll put a tenner on him at some point being referred to as Abraham Menken by one of the Roy siblings.

When they referred to H, who did they mean? Hillary?

A certain fascist German dictator....

Yeah, last two episodes have been pretty weak for him, and I don't know what exactly he can pull out of the hat either.

Before this season started, I was quite sure that they will kill off Logan by the end of the season. If I was a betting man, I'd still put my money on it, but now it wouldn't surprise me if Kendall ends up taking his own life. But surely one of them has to go at the end of the season because otherwise we are stuck in a repetitive cycle.

Yeah, I think so too. It's kinda ruled out Ken from any sort of fightback at this stage.

Kendall is just surrounding himself with yes men and going in circles. Not sure where that’s going but surely somewhere.

Tom is great as usual.

Very good analysis. I think his character arc this season, seemed ok even till the good tweets/bad tweets episode but it has definitely spiralled due to the the anti-climatic resolution to the Sandy arc. S2 ending was supposed to be a real threat to Logan. He asked Kendall to take the fall in first place since he was told that he needed to give something big to retain control of the company. As it stands though, the federal case against him is suddenly weak despite him not even wanting to be in US at the start of the season due to the threat of being arrested or actively trying to pressure the president to influence the case. No clear reason is given why suddenly same is not as big a worry for him other than evidence on papers not being strong enough now. Similarly the threat of losing the company which kick started the whole Kendall fiasco also was resolved without any real drawback to the Logans. Heck they were even travelling in "PJ" this episode, pretty much showing that they are not even going to bother to adhere to any promises made. I personally have found this season very underwhelming, especially since only 3 episodes are left. Logan undermining Shiv has been a theme for more than a season now with likely pay off being her splitting or turning against him at the end of the season. If not then not sure what's the point.
Given the promo of next episode, I expect Kendall to hit the actual rock bottom and kick start some kind of redemption arc.
