Sturridge vs Welbeck

Not sure if anyone needs to be brilliant against that Stoke defense. I can't believe many argued that United should buy back Shawcross...

Sturridge is very good though, and I believed he would be a great signing for Liverpool - turns out I was right, for once.

I wasn't. Thought he would be crap. Bet he'll still be shit for England though.

He has predominantly been either too selfish or ineffective during his international appearances thus far, no reason at all why should be seen as above Danny in the pecking order for England.

He has been a standout talent since his youth days in all honesty. He didn't get the chances his talent deserved at City and Chelsea.

He's the better player than Welbeck for me too.

Not too sure why so many on here have always seemed so reluctant to admit that Sturridge is actually a good player.

Good assist and composed finish for his goal, was only against the Stockey Horror Show when they were already down and pushing for an equaliser so perhaps it's a bit premature to announce his seemless return to being the best striker in the league after Suarez or whatever...

In the same way that Danny's goal yesterday was aided by some good fortune n the build-up so was Sturridge's, both did well under the circumstances however receive quite different media reaction by most.

that was Sturridge's 20th league goal in 28 league games for us. 24 in 32 in all competitions.

His all round game is very good, i don't know what it'll take for people to see that.

It will be erased the next time he tries a shot where he might have passed it instead. Back to "Sturridge is the most selfish striker in the league" etc.

I'd say a large part of it is down to Sturridge being compared to Welbeck from the beginning. When people exaggerate on one side, others exaggerate on the other side to balance it out. Welbeck is compared to Kuyt and Sturridge is compared to Defoe. Andy Cole is probably a good comparison for Sturridge in fairness. I suppose Welbeck's not too far off Yorke either.

Mostly because he played for City, Chelsea and now Liverpool and because he's English and rated around the same as Welbeck. We can't have that, Welbeck must be better.

If you read this thread he wasn't 'rated around the same as Welbeck', he was regarded as being on another planet by a number of utter cretins. Hence my bumping and mockery of aforementioned cretins.

I think probably over half of the people on here think Sturridge is better. It's not seen as a controversial opinion anyway. Saying Sturridge is so far ahead of him that there can be no comparison is unsurprisingly a controversial opinion.

Commendable and in its way a vindication of his calls to be used as a forward, however unless he performs better against Denmark in the spring Sturridge should start the Italy match on the bench.

There are people on here who think Hernandez is better than Welbeck. It's how you value different attributes in a striker. I like strikers who can consistently hold onto the ball under pressure and bring others into play, other people seem to prefer straight finishers..

I've read a lot more nonsense about Sturridge not being a good player than about Welbeck not being as good. The only over the top comments about Welbeck not being nearly as good are from rival fans, particularly Liverpool fans

Football fans in being quick(er) to criticise opposition players shocker. I agree that him being a rival fan plays a part in it. I just don't agree with the idea that people can't accept Welbeck being the worse player. From what I can see the majority of people think Sturridge is better. It's just some of those that don't are more vocal about it on here.

I'm pretty sure I remember there used to be a "Welbeck vs Macheda" thing that went on as well.

If he can get 15 league goals this season it'll have been a great season for him and extremely promising for the future.

Indeed. Hopefully he can prove to the United fans that were getting on his back that he's the man for the future since we're likely to see a large scale squad overhaul in the summer and there being question marks over RvP and Rooney.

He's doing very well playing in a struggling, pedestrian team and having such an impressive goal record this season as well as his usual all round game.

As good a signing he's been Mignolet evens it out by being utterly shit, could well be the difference in the season either of them
Should you not be practicing for your transfer test
or something?

Turns out I was wrong. It's 20 goals in 27 league games.

Same amount Torres needed to notch his first 20 for us.

Mind you, Sturridge was quicker to his 20 in all competitions.

And he's doing it playing second fiddle to Suarez' giant alphorn.

Don't really care if he gets overlooked for England.

England can pluck right off. Prefer him drinking sangria on a beach than injuring himself in Rio.

Between Rooney, Sturridge and Welbeck, England do actually have three very good strikers who provide different options for the World Cup- assuming Sturridge can step up and transfer his league form to international level.

Not that it means anything because we're not going to show up as a team as per usual. Presumably because Hodgson will be pressured into playing star names, rather than making a balanced side and then we'll blame it all on fatigue.

What about big Andy?

Welbeck's been in good form recently (and generally this season tbh) but Sturridge has been on a whole other level. I think at the moment there's no doubt who's the better.

This is a decent moment for making comparisons, because they've now played almost the exact same amount of minutes in the league this season. So you may as well explain in what possible sense has Sturridge 'been on a whole other level?'

Got to ask, do people think Welbeck would be scoring and assisting more or less often if he were playing for Liverpool this season?

Whether we like to admit it of not, they are playing better attacking football than us this year.
