Film Star Wars

I've finally gotten around to finishing the Episode 2 review by Plinkett. While it focuses on Star Wars, I think most of the points he makes can be applied to cinema in general. More shit and CGI does not make a better movie(yes, I'm talking to you Avatar).

Anyway, George Lucas is a billionaire through some absolute miracle that his idiocy was hidden for 30 years. From now on, I'm going to ignore the existence of episodes 1-3 in the same way that the sequels to the Matrix never happened.

It might just be because my kids have turned out all wrong or something but a word of warning to all of you chaps who "can't wait" to introduce your kids to Star Wars...

They probably won't like it.

I'm sorry. It's the truth.

When we were kids, there was nothing else like it in the history of film. The characters were all fantastic and collecting all the figures and playing with our Millenium Falcons and Tie-Fighters was brilliant but they don't give a shit any more.

They will watch it and start yawning within half an hour as C3P0 and R2D2 are making lame "conversation" whilst walking through the desert.

Darth Vader won't be half as scary to them as he was to us and they probably won't even get to the part where we're all urging Chewbacca to use his enormous strength to halt the progress of the garbage compactor so they won't build that same bond that we had with the big fella.

Sorry to piss on your fireworks but I thought I'd best let you know now.

Does anyone know anyone who would like to adopt two boys, aged 8 and 12, by the way?

You're not Manc. Manc kids don't use "lame" as an adjective. Bloody Glazer

I like the way you think

Also remember to forget the new Indiana Jones film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, that was a fecking piece of shit

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The last Indy film was the Last Crusade.

Saw in one of my emails from play or amazon cant remember which that they are taking pre-orders now for the 6 films on bluray :D think price quoted was £70 for the 6 of them in one pack so that will mean another copy of the films to add to my various current versions.

I've read Spectre of the Past - it's part of a two parter which has a
clone of Thrawn about ten years after the first Zahn trilogy. They're good. Luke bones Mara Jade at the end I think (well he might not actually bone her).
I've read at least ten of those books which were written after ROTJ and there's a fair bit of continuity in them. This one is good: The New Rebellion - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki. The black fleet trilogy and the Jedi trilogy are also good.
Eventually the series starts covering Luke, Han and Leia's kids, but I never got that far

Have you read the New Jedi Order books? It's a 19 book series. It's excellent. Poor at times, but I enjoyed it. They've really released a LOT of books.

I've read almost every book they've released. There are a few books that deal with the rise of the Sith Order(this is like 2000 years before the movies), they're good as well.

I have been reading on the net about the possibility of Star Wars 7-8-9.
I don't know where I stand with this , the last 3 film are not very good compared to the first 3.
I can see the merits of making more films there is more to tell about what happened to them all of them all after there victory.

Also reading that they also make a Clone Wars film , that could be interesting and it would be more that one film.
IMHO I cant see them making 7-8-9 but I can see them doing a Clone Wars

Can't see him making 7-8-9 yet, he's first going to milk the 3D versions of each film + the blu ray release this year followed by 'the ultimate' 3D blu-ray boxset.

My cousin loves Star Wars. When he was 7 he could name all the planets and species that had been in the movies or video games. He's 10 now.
Your kids are just a bit lame. Sorry about that.

7-8-9 as in Star Wars with like 2 Jedi's in them?

If Lucas makes anymore Star Wars movies he better not direct or write them all on his own. If that happens I reckon it could work since the prequels will make any new stuff look like gold.

I thought they were meant to be doing a live action series?

But yeah I would be worried if he makes 3 more. But I would still go watch them

Pre booked mine today. Xtra Vision in Ireland will have it in stock next Friday the 9th.

For pre booking I got a free copy of Family Guy Blue Harvest

It's available for £57 from Amazon & Tesco Entertainment.

I'm going to wait for a few reviews before buying this. Also, some are claiming Lucas will release a 'proper' blu-ray ultimate edition next year to coincide with the 3D releases.

Edit: Seems they've edited a few of the scenes, and going by this I don't like what they've done :(

I'd like to point out at this point that if the obsessive mid 30-40 something Star Wars geeks who spend hours complaining about Lucas' little pointless changes stopped buying his re-releases of the same films they've seen a hundred times with little changes they hate anyway, he might not keep doing them.

Because - and here's the crucial thing - Star Wars isn't exactly a hit with the kids these days. People aren't thinking "Wow! Those prequels were awesome, lets go and buy the special limited edition Blu Ray collectors edition of the originals and see what happens next!!"...It's still just you guys. Without you, his oil well would dry up.

You could start drying it up now by not buying it of course, and just watching the version of the films you like, and liked originally...but you won't. You'll buy this. And so I have no sympathy with you what so ever. In fact I hope they change Leah to a pre-op transexual and give her a little CGI flying space penguin side kick called Shaquille just to be modern and interesting to the yout.

This is probably true to be honest. Hell I'm now in my early 20's so am hardly a youth, but I know lots of people from my generation who have never really bothered with the Star Wars films. Including me

I'm 27 and neither me nor anyone in my peer group have any real interest in Star Wars. I've seen them of course. They're alright. Good SFX for the 70s, but a bit meh everywhere else. It was an event movie from the late 70s that people who grew up in that era obsess over and rank as some of the greatest shit ever mande, but no one else really does.

The target audience for this is not kids. It's the people who've already seen it a hundred times. Kids would rather watch the Harry Potter films, or something Japanese with epilepsy inducing visuals.

You're still to young, tbh. My missus is in your age group and she doesn't see the fascination either.

They were stunning for the 70s/80s. That said, they look well dated now whereas Blade Runner still looks lush.

And I'm not going to bother with these, I've seen the films a billion times....I don't think BR or gimmicky 3D could add anything to an already exhausted franchise.

Wanna swap a Han Solo figure for an Imperial Guard?

Yeah, I wasn't saying I was in the age group. I'm definitely well out. Born in 83 and grew up with late 80s early 90s stuff as my cinematic reference.

But there are lots of films that span countless generations, including several from the 70s, like the Godfather or Apocalypse Now. I can still watch Ghostbusters and "get it" even though I was 1 when it came out. To me, the fact that Star Wars doesn't resonate like this, says a lot about the actual quality of Star Wars.

They were stunning for the 70s/80s.

Jurassic Park was stunning for the early 90s. People don't continue to buy endless updated editions of it where the Raptors are given realistic feathering and Jeff Goldblum made black by CGI
