Television Star Trek

Netflix are apparently investing $15b in original content. They are logically the ones who should've done the Star Trek series as it would've had much broader reach than just CBS digital in the US.

Maybe they will pick it up once CBS inevitably cancel it?

The cast of characters looks shit. I know that we've only seen a few trailers so far, but it's looking a bit meh so far.

The biggest strength (apart from the great storylines) that both TOS and the next generation had was that both shows had instantly iconic characters that were played by great and charismatic actors.

I'm really hoping that this is great.

Looking forward to watching it regardless of my fears.

I don't know if I like the idea of the captain not being the main character in the show.

This is nailed on to be shite.

Also making it as a prequel is fecking silly, we already know the story and how it ends. Would be far more interesting to have it in a totally different quadrant of space with new stuff and things we haven't seen before.

Thats one of the things i'm interested about! Would be different to see the world of trek through someone who isnt making the big decisions but if affected by it

That’s what i’ve like to have seen.

I heard this series will not stay in the same era but that each season will be a different era.

i just realized this was supposed to air today :D:cool::D:cool::D

*searches the interwebs for any leads*

It usually takes 5-6 episodes to like the characters. First season of ds9 was crap aswell but it turned out to be an excellent series. Same with enterprise...

I have access to episodes 1 and 2. I'll watch 2 after this and if it doesn't grab me then I'm out

Watching it now. Its complete crap so far.

A horrible CGI fest with rubbish characters.
:( Not the reaction I was hoping for. I’ve been checking on Twitter and it seems pretty split. Either you love it or hate it. Funny enough a lot of people are saying the Orville is more Star Trek than discovery. Might give that a go if this doesn’t pan out

Edit: saw the trailer for the orville and how can anyone say that’s trek?! I’ll give it a view but jeez

And let’s not forget tng. Hell, the first two seasons were wooden characters and crap storylines

I haven't watched any Star Trek bar JJ movies. Does it make sense to start watching this?

What was that?!

That girl from The Walking Dead?! she's more wooden than Padme Amidala's character in The Phantom Menace. Surely they could have just watched TWD and gone, "let's not".

So, some reviews from IMDB.

Here's the thing about Star Trek: despite all the crazy things that have gone on in the show and movies there was always a certain logic, certain rules, that held the boundaries of the Star Trek universe together. The shows did push those boundaries at times, and the more recent movies have been playing perilously close to the edge, but this latest instalment completely abandons them. Watch this show for 5 minutes (if you can stand it) and you will know what I mean. Any notion of "science fiction" has been left in the dust. This show is pure fantasy.

But beyond that, it's just bad. The acting is wooden. The characters are unlikable. The special effect seem fake. The writing is cliché after cliché. Nobody acts like you would expect real people to act. The cast seems to be picked solely to fulfill artificial race and gender quotas, to a point where it's noticeable. Such a menagerie might look good in some corporate boardroom but doesn't provide any actual value or chemistry to the show.

This show doesn't feel like "Star Trek," it feels like a bad, low budget sci-fi show from an obscure TV channel. It makes a sad statement on the time we live in.

First a disclaimer. I came here to check who wrote and directed this because I didn't think of it while watching. So this is not a well thought out (i.e. planned) review.

It was really incredibly clichéd and, as such, disappointing. I am tired of the forced clichés, stereotypical 2017 forced motif and obvious obvious manipulation.

A female captain who is Chinese (I actually liked Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - it is actually one of my favorite films), a Number 1 that is a black female, more females, an Arab looking guy and aliens are next. Please do not misunderstand I am a very liberal voter, but I can admit and recognize cliché after cliché when I see it. I think Hollywood can now please stop with the female lead X-Men, Star Wars, Ghostbusters so on and so forth. Seriously.

Also, could someone tell me if the studio that made this is one of the ones the Chinese bought? Like Independence Day Resurgence or Kong Skull Island the Chinese owners insist on placing everything Chinese in the films. Here even the ship is named in Chinese.

The aesthetics are very 'new' Star Trek and I was checking to see if the Hollywood hack JJ Abrams was involved with this. That guy is the worst destroyer and disruptor of Star Wars and Star Trek, but apparently the studio made this disappointment without Jar Jar Abrams' help. There was some good variety of species, which I enjoyed, and a whole lot of ignoring of Star Trek cannon that is very disappointing and lazy. People will defend it but they are just being hags. Violating a universe and context should not be allowed if the title has a series' name on it then it must support and follow that universe.

The show lost me before it could even get going. They spend zero time developing the characters before placing them into position that we're supposed to worry about them. I can barely understand a word being said by Michelle Yeoh, and Sonequa Martin-Green couldn't act her way out of a speeding ticket.

I fully embrace the diversity of the Star Trek universe, however this completely feels like a liberal hit job. How many minorities can we squeeze into a single series? Have we made sure EVERYONE is fully represented now?

This is a disgrace and should never have been aloud to carry the Star Trek brand.

I've been a big fan of Star Trek long before Star Wars and long before Sci Fi conventions were popular. I have enjoyed "most" of the movies they put out and of the TV series there were some I like more than others.

When I heard about Discovery I thought it would be cool to see things from the beginning before Kirk and Spock, however as I started to see the previews arrive I began to get really concerned.

There are too many issues with the new show which I think suck. The main over compassing issue is they are trying to reboot the series again by bringing people who want to dress up Star Trek to make it fashionable for new viewers.

However, they are moronic for thinking such things.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going retro and making this "older" but making it look "new".

The show lacks any continuity with the original series and looks more like fifty years after Kirk and Spock.

They failed with this show and while some of you new-comers to the Star Trek series might enjoy it, for us older Star Trek fans I can't see supporting this series because they got it ALL WRONG.

It pretty much goes on like that....

TBH I think the die hard Star Trek fans tend to hate anything post voyager

I really wish I didn’t read that. I was going for so much

Just fecking knew they would botch it.

Reviews even worse than I imagined.

Only seen the first episode, about to watch the second, but I feel people are being over the top in their criticism. It's got some work to do if it's to live up to Star Trek at its best, where it engages in profound dialectics, but it's certainly good television so far.

Just finished the second, not quite sure how I feel. It's worth saying that every series (except for TOS, which just got progressively worse) takes a while to find its feet. A bit ham-fisted in parts, but I'm going to keep watching for now.

As a piece of television, it's not terrible. Now, that's not to say it's good but it's a decent enough watch, with impressive SFX and plenty of action. Sure, it's unoriginal and shallow but the nerd in me appreciates a space battle. As a series of Star Trek its not really Star Trek.

Conceptually, it was always clear they were showing total contempt for existing trekkies. It was a story nobody wanted, a show destined to be aesthetically jarring given the improved CGI and a lead character that has been done to death throughout the Trek shows. Still, had they respected the cannon (nerd meltdown reaching a solid 7) and stayed true to the spirit of the franchise, I think people would have received it positively.

The credits probably encapsulates the show the best; pretty but soulless. Hopefully it will improve.

Keep Klingon language in the Big Bang Theory, where it belongs.

Ugly, as they are.

Show's definitely more for the fans of Jar Jar's Trek.

I've only seen the first episode and i liked it. Not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from if i'm being honest.

Maybe its not Trek (for now! you hit the mark about all shows taking a while to find its feet) but as a sci-fi show its pretty great.

EDIT - one thing i didnt like was the design of the Klingon's. In Enterprise we saw how they lost their cranial ridges because of a disease that spread after they played around with human augments. It explained the look in TOS (which takes place 10 years after this) but its like they're wiping out the events from Enterprise. Now I get it. They're going to be the main bad guys in the series so you want something that looks menacing and cool but they should have respected the canon... Who knows, maybe they'll explain it later in the series...

I really liked it. Anyone who thinks Orville is better than Discovery needs their head checking.

It's nowhere near as hammy as traditional Star Trek. The 'feel' is different from earlier series, in that it owes its grittiness to trying to show what traversing space might actually be like (for a TV13 audience). Much more Das Boot than Hunt For Red October, though.

The direction is maybe a little bit too lens-flarey and has a few too many uneven camera shots. But they're going for a certain aesthetic so I can forgive them for it. All that being said, it doesn't skimp on the sci-fi or the philosophical quandaries. A great start, imo.

Granted, the Klingons are less human than before. But I think if that's a sticking point for you as a viewer, you're probably coming at this show from the wrong angle. I like the other-worldliness of it. It's not the idealised 'United Nations between planets' conceit of old. They're actually trying to alien-ise the aliens.

Its weird one, for some reason that Klingon looks so out of place for me. Otherwise, think show is good enough to kill your time, watch it and never re-watch it again.

I enjoyed it. It wasnt bad. A decent start. Given how badly the original did back in the 60's I'm not concerned. Stop whining :)

The production design (if you can call it that) is really cheap imo. Looks more like a PS4 game than the real deal.

Except this one is crap. The 60s show offered some pretty good story lines for that era. This new one makes Enterprise look good.

Ratings...1.6 with 8 million watchers. People in the comments or tvbythenumbers, that probably know way more about that stuff than me saying it's pretty bad. But that it doesn't much matters, as it's only showing anyway on TV.

Same situation here. Only watched the last 3 movies, which I enjoyed quite a bit, specially the first one.

Shall I watch this tv series?

I love a good scifi tv series, like The Expanse.. is this on that level or close?

Watch all the Star Trek episodes up to this new series. You'll be busy for months.

The Expanse is much better to me.

Weirdly, there's not much science fiction in STD (I love that acronym). Action, war, and it looks like it'll be like that in the future as well.

Hard to say because i've never seen the Expanse but this shows only 2 eps...

Without knowing anything else i'll say yes. yes this is better than the Expanse, and by some margin
