Television Star Trek

Voyager on the other hand has unique setting, but the worst captain imo. I just couldn't take Janeway seriously. characters in general aren't as complex and interesting as those in TNG and DS9, so...

It really was a failure in character building. And once season 4 started, it focused so much on Seven and the Doctor no one had a chance.

1. DS9
2. TNG
3. Voyager/ Enterprise
4. TOS

for me, DS9 have the most complex characters, best acting and probably the best action scenes of all series. I was actually in love with Kira when I was younger

TNG has Picard of course and it's pretty much on the same level as DS9, but I always felt that series never started something big like Dominion war (or like journey home in Voyager).

Enterprise isn't much better in that regard, but it's pretty short so that never really becomes an issue. and yes, T'Pol

TOS is simply ridiculous unless you grew up watching Spock and Kirk. it just lacks quality when you put nostalgia aside.

as for movies, Voyage Home (1986), Undiscovered Country (1991), Star Trek (2009) and First Contact (1996) are the ones I probably loved the most.

Agreed. DS9 was the best. Garek as a character is pretty underrated.

A little tid bit for you...was watching the episode the other day.

she's just

as for Garak, yeah... I can't understand why the gave up from developing characters like him in later series. him, Tain, Dukat, Damar... it's not only Star Trek that needs such characters - every movie or show needs them. Voyager was abysmal in that regard. the most charismatic characters there were guy without emotions and hologram

Quick question to the Trekkers here

What was the last we heard of the Borg in Star Trek? They haven't been wiped out or anything right?

I think an interesting series would be if, set 100 years after voyager, the borg have taken over a good chunk of the federation and there is an almighty war going on... Rather than another prequel series.

Maybe a bit too similar to BSG but think I'd still be more interested

The last we see of the Borg was the final episode of Voyager when the Queen is killed and Voyager finally makes it back to Earth. There are multiple Queens though (another was killed in First Contact), so I don't believe believe the Borg have been wiped out; though they probably suffered a big loss that will take time to recover from. A pity that we don't have anything set after Voyager to we know if the Borg are still a threat to the Federation, or if they are sticking the Delta Quadrant from now on.

I know the zombie culture is a bit overplayed now, but that would at least be an interesting story line right? Something not seen before in Star Trek.

What happens post Voyager in the books? (I assume there are books, and I assume they go past Voyager)

Would absolutely love a series like that, or even some other unknown species.

Remember the Borg tried to take on species 8472? The Borg triggered a war with them when they penetrated fluidic space. Superb few episodes on Voyager.

Yea, those were some great episodes.

After Voyager you get into temporal travel, as shown by episodes like Relativity and the temporal prime directive. I co-wrote a treatment for a new series using the temporal prime directive back in 2005 but it never got anywhere. IMO Star Trek has to move on from its retro-obsession with the Enterprise and fast forward a few hundred years into the future. All kinds of new writing possibilities from the new technology in that period.

What happened with the time travel TNG crew got in first contact. At the end of the movie, dont they happily time travel back to their time? Does everyone just have time travel now?

Not that time travel necerssarily has to kill a series. A war between the bourg and the federation where both sides have time travel could still be really interesting if done properly (im not sure how star trek deals with paradoxes)

That's the entire point of the temporal prime directive. The federation is charged with policing the timeline from nefarious elements.

And the space faring dinosaurs that left earth millions of years ago.

Looks better than the first trailer. Not sure i like dark Star Trek but i'll give it a try

Looks like it could be good if given a chance. I personally love JJ's style of trekking, more lens flare pls!

Looks pretty mediocre if you ask me. Way too much CGI and the production quality looks pretty underwhelming.

I just wish they would make the show trekkies want; prime universe, post voyager. They should stop being greedy, it's never going to be mainstream, it's never going to be star wars. There's surely enough fans world wide to make money from such a show.

So can somebody give me a quick breakdown of that trailer?
Is it an actual new star trek series by Netflix?
When is it supposed to be set?
Where is meant to be set? Apart from the obvious 'on the starship'.

Its set 10 years prior to TOS. Apparently much of the storyline involves the usual handbags between the federation and the Klingons in "those days".

In the U.S. its on CBS - premiers with a two part episode in late September.

Looks a lot like a video game at times. A bit too CGI if you ask me.

Thank you.
Not exactly what i wanted to hear though. Was hoping for a team to follow on from Voyager and go back to the delta quadrant.

Many of us were hoping for something significantly further up in the timeline....around Voyager or even after. Sad that they keep going back to the TOS era.

Big fan of TNG and DS9, this looks a little action orientated. I'll probably end up watching it at some point regardless.

My favourite sort of episodes are like the one where Worf returns from a tournament and realises he's experiencing the same 24 hours on loop, but with subtle changes each time. After much head scratching, a little freaking out, and your usual Worf style anger management wobbles, it turns out he's only gone and fallen through a hole in the space time continuum on the way home! Doh! We've all done it at some point I suppose, easy enough to sort out.

If this new one includes the odd bit of similar weirdness alongside the epic space battles and so forth, I'll be happy enough.

Yeah, that was a sweet one. I did prefer such episodes as well, even one with doctor Crusher and, if I recall correctly, her own private (imploding) universe. Picard with a whole life as a different person in a flash of a moment, one with flute, that one was great as well.

Yep, give me those over any klingons, romulans, etc.

After end of Blacks Sails, GoT and Twin Peaks, this could be a decent option to geek out.

Netflix generally does not screwing around, first Star Trek and now also Judge Dredd series in production.

Casual ST fan...trailer looks okay but they need to do something post Voy....this has been done already with Enterprise.

I don't think Netflix has much to do with it. I guess they just had a deal with CBS to offer it via their distribution...?
Maybe, yeah. Mainly because of bad distribution Dredd movie didn't had a sequel and perhaps somebody finally did something about it with in form of a series.

Whoever helped in achieving that, kudos to them. Star Trek have more than five series while Dredd had absolute nothing. Looking forward to both, even though in Star Trek's case, it's probably gullible to expect something remotely close to Babylon 5/TNG/Battlestar remake level.

Meh. I'm not sure I'm onboard with having any kind of hero, be they male/female/transgender/white/black/yellow/green/purple/blue/human/alien/new yorker/carbon based/mineral/hard/soft/blob/corbyn.

I'd rather ST tells stories again. This looks like it's going to be action with ridiculously op characters that survive all odds regardless. Yawn.

Netflix are apparently investing $15b in original content. They are logically the ones who should've done the Star Trek series as it would've had much broader reach than just CBS digital in the US.

I'm finishing the sixth season of Voyager and I just saw Tom Morello in one of the episodes  the only reason I decided to watch the series is because I thought I'll change my mind about it, but no, for me it's still comfortably below DS9 and TNG.

Star Trek Discovery airs Monday on Netflix. In case anyone is interested.

Definitely going to watch it and starting to get excited about watching the first series since Enterprise. If its anything like the last 2 seasons of Enterprise i'd love it.

Personally i'd have TNG over DS9. I loved both but something about TNG was how it didnt need a big all out battle at the end, it relied on clever writing to keep it entertaining. My favourite episode was the "Drumhead" where theres no fire fights or anything dramatically but its so clever. By contrast my favourite DS9 eps revolve around something big happening. Still had a lot of good storylines to keep it going

Enterprise got ridiculously good in seasons 3 and 4 but by then most people had tuned out, which was a shame. Would still rank it above Voyager which was by far (for me) the worst of the bunch. As you said it had the worst captain, someone trying to be Picard when someone like Kirk would have been more fun, supporting cast that were never developed properly and once season 4 hit it became a parody of itself. To keep viewers it then focused on Seven and the Doctor which had a few fun episodes but as a whole poor viewing.

Never saw TOS outside a few eps but respect to it... it brought me TNG!
