Stam V Vidic

They compliment each other very well.

Stam was generally the defender most likely to come out with the ball from the defence, and pick out a midfielder - Rio like. He also had Johnsen by his side, who was excellent on the ball.

I reckon the best player to compare Vidic with was Bruce.

Rio's actually brilliant on the ball. Fergie originally wanted Blanc to compliment Stam. . . Blanc being the cultured ball playing CB, but that idea went tits up for whatever reason.

This thread is nothing without pictures:

I suspect that Stam had a greater presence. Vidic is blossoming excellently though.

Here we again with this bollocks. Vidic is a rock for Man Utd and for Serbia. And was a rock for every team prior to that. So don't say he is average without Rio. I could say the same thing about Rio prior to the arrival of Vidic.

You could, but then you'd sound like a bit of a lunatic.

Stam, by the way....

Not really, Rio has become a better player with Vidic next to him no coincidence there.

Aye but when responding to the statement that Vidic has looked average without Rio, you went on to say that the same could be applied to Rio.
This is wrong on so many levels. Rio Ferdinand is the best centre back on the planet at the moment, and would look excellent even if he was playing alongside inferior players to Vidic. He forged an excellent partnership with Brown prior to Vidic, and has been the standout England centre back for quite some time.

My mistake then.

No contest. Stam by a dozen miles. He had pace, positioning, toughness, desire, intimidation, aerial ability. Only thing he lacked was a presence in the attacking box. Could you have imagined a Blanc/Stam partnership from 98-01? Johnsen was quality too but his injuries ruined his career for the most part. I'd rate losing Ronny in 99/00 was a key reason for not retaining the European cup.

I can't believe people are actually debating this.

Before last season, I would have picked Stam over Rio as well. Vida's got another level or two to go before reaching Stam's level. Now he was a proper hard man.

Exactly. People forget how he once made Silvestre look like
a quality CB partner.

Stam was a serious beast. I thought he was going to kill Vieira that one time.

It will have to be Stam for me still but Vidic has been brilliant as well - a lot of people credit Rio as being the brains but Vidic does his fair share as well. He's had some great matches including the final and he will probably get better. In time maybe my opinion will change. Glad we've had both of them though.

At the moment, Stam, Vidic will surpass Stam though I think, hes still only 25 or 26.

And you think he's going to get quicker as he gets older?

Stam was the most complete central defender I've seen at United - concentration, presence, heading, marking, positioning and reading of the game, ball-playing and - people forget this - pace.

Him and Rio would be unbeatable.

Er... except for his spell at Spartak Moscow.

Where we was complete unmitigated shite.

With little shitty bells on.

Stam is/was the better defender, but Nemanja is not far off.

A better question would be - who'd win in a fight? I suspect Vi

Stam would eat Vidic for breakfast!

Vidic let Drogba slap him around the face FFS!

Vidic would shit his pants if big old baldy Stam was running towards him wanting a ruck!

As to who is/was the better defender i'd have to say Stam but Vidic is young enough to surpass him.

He would have fecked Drogba up if he wasn't pulled back. Vidic wouldn't run from Stam either, he'd rather get beaten then run.

+1 for that

Me and my son were watching the treble video last night and he asked me who i thought was the better defender of Stam or Vidic.Initialy i said Vida without hesitating but after thinking for a while i am not sure and a choice of either player at their best is a hell of a tough one.

Stam.

Stam is in another level then Vidic. Vidic has his moments but Stam was always in the moment, like Rio is turning into. Stam it must be noted is one of my favorite defenders :D

We were actually quite poor for some time after getting rid of Stam, he was a massive loss for us (this obviously had a lot to do with his replacement Larry White)

I loved Stam, he was a fantastic defender

As many have said, Stam was stronger, quicker and better at his peak.

As some have said, Vidic is still improving and could yet prove the better.

As none have said, Stam was later convicted of taking steroids.

Sorry, but drugs are the single biggest threat to football as we know it - took me a while to decide, but Stam is no longer in my personal all-time team.

Well I did kind of mention it

Must have been the time when he was on Nandrolone.
