Stam V Vidic

Other thing to considerate is that Stam have the cover of Keane, and that's a massive difference, not to mention how good we were back then meaning we're more on the offensive.

Other aspect is that Keane > Carrick, Gary + Irwin > Rafael + Evra, Johnsen < Rio.

So it's not as clean cut as it looks like

raisa84045 mentioned it already to be fair.

A little easy those comparisons... Johnsen was very very good... Very unlucky with injuries...

Stam >>> Vidic he had Vidic aerial dominance, was probably stronger and was the fastest centreback - no one could touch the imperious Stam.

As much as I love vidic and rate him as one of the best (if not the best cb) around at the moment. Stam was even better in his pomp. Shame he was sold too early (by saf's own admission).

Stam for sheer quality and effectiveness, Vidic overall due to his great form and comparative longevity.

(Stam also shone in a period when we had some top top defenders around Europe - Italians, Germans, Argentinians. These days I'm struggling to name more then 3-4 top top Central defenders outside of United!).

Which indicates Stam stood out in a golden era of defenders where as Vidic stands out because there is a dearth of great defenders. This is nothing but a win for the Stam camp.

the annoying thing is that despite it being not so long ago, I cant find any decent footage of Stam in action for United

Vidic by some distance I'd say and even more so if you compare to later days Stam who had clearly lost a yard of pace which he really needed because he was really easily turned. Not that htis made Stam a bad player in any way. Thew Rio/Vidic partnership is the best CB combination that I have ever seen for United.

nice tribute to Paul McGrath, although most of it is Ireland and Villa, theres a few clips of him in United colours too

Legend, real shame he didn't see out his days at United

McGrath, Whiteside and Robson - all incredibly talented, all incredible drunks who all suffered incredible injury setbacks.
Never looked after themselves, imagine how much better Robson could have been without the injuries, and as for Whiteside, who knows. He would have been only 27 years old during the 1992/93 inaugural Premiership Season, he still could have been playing for us in 1999 for God's sake.

As for Stam v Vidic, I'd actually say Vidic as he's part of a great partnership with Ferdinand which is an emulation of Ferguson's other best known defensive duo Bruce and Pallister.

Vidic is the Steve Bruce; fearless, not quick but steady footed and concise with his passing and gets the odd goal (not as many as Brucey, obviously!).
Rio is like Ferdinand; more graceful and quick, tall and elegant and like Pallister hardly ever scores.

No fecking way.. Sorry, i've watched both Stam and Vidic in every single of their game in a United shirt, and that is simply nonsense. I agree that Stam is superior in every single way but with the exception of heading, be it attacking a corner, or defending high balls into the box. Vidic simply has no peers in that department.

Vidic, by quite a distance.

Stam was a much diminished defender once he lost a yard of pace. Vidic has never relied on it.

What yard of pace loss? He was excellent in italy and when you lose this so called yard of pace the last place you want to play is fullback where you do need pace.

That was SAF reason for selling Stam which he later admits he was wrong.

Vidic he owns the air and has for the last 3 seasons and hes getting better and better I swear

How many times did Stam get sent off? Vidic one weakness is pacy forwards something Stam gobbled up with ease. It's no disrespect to Vidic at all being second to Stam.

I think Vidic's biggest weakness is his clumsiness. Absolutely awesome defender, but he gives away needless fouls, even when he was superb against Tottenham last night, it may have been a different story had a couple of those free kicks gone in and people would be viewing his performance in a different light.
Absolutely agree.

Stam, Rio and Vidic were/are world class. If I were to range them it would be Rio first, Stam second and Vidic third. They're all 10 out of 10, more or less.

Vidic-Rio-Stam at their peak as the three CBs in a 5-4-1 formation with Rio playing as a Sweeper would be a sight

My ball!!!!

Maybe a better discussion would be the best United centre-back pairing.

- Kevin Moran & Paul McGrath (mid 1980s)
- Steve Bruce & Pallister (late 1980s-mid 1990s)
- Jaap Stam & Rohnny Johnsen/Henning Berg (late 1990s)
- Rio Ferdinand & Tweety Silvestre/Wes Brown (Early 2000s)
- Rio Ferdinand & Nemanja Vidic (Mid 2000s-2010s)

Well, I think it is already exceptional that Vidic is being talked in the same bracket as Stam, who became the most expensive defender in the world when he joined United, and Rio, who is currently holding that title.

I think Vidic is underrated, but I wouldn't try and do the opposite move by claiming he is better than Stam or whichever defensive United legend. He is Vidic and that's massive enough

Jaap Stam will forever be tainted in my view after Craig David outmuscled him. 5 minutes in. The Zamarano incident does slightly make up for it though

:lol: feckin hell, craig david smashed it.

Nor can I, if I'd managed to do that to Stam, I reckon I'd have just jizzed myself on the spot, judging by David's finish right after I reckon he done the same.
