South Korean President declares martial law, accuses opposition | Martial law lifted

Will Son Heung-min will have to trade his golden boots for combat boots. What does this do to Spurs title chances ;-)
Civil war nailed on to start a few days before Spurs play Liverpool.

Impressive work, until they realise it was all a bit needless, the adrenalin has worn off and you have to tidy up at 4am.
Still, props to them for having got the vote done and managing to create the confusion in the face of potential consequences. Looks like it's going away without any real bother, world doesn't need more disruption right now.

S. Korean media reporting that CCTV footage suggests there was an attempt to arrest political leaders when it initially all started.

Well, the president declared martial law. Why? Well, I guess details will follow in the next weeks and months. He had budgetary issues with the opposition and there are investigations against his wife. But to declare martial law because of that is crazy and a radical move and frankly authoritarian.

Well maybe they can arrange for he and his wife to share a cell now!

A part from this being absolutely bonkers mad man power grab. I don't think enough coverage is being given to just how eager the military was to implement this.

Yeah this is what bugs me, they should be refusing such orders without any justification.

Considering this seems to be a president and defense minister simply telling each other "a coup would be good don't ya think", on a regular weekday night, should have caused hesitation. But no, they went straight into the plan with gusto. Some awkward questions have to be asked now.

Does it though? Is it confirmed it was without any prep?

I think that's the bad thing about this - even though it failed it could be successful in the sense that it made people doubt the seemingly poor stability of democracy itself. Not unlike certain other events elsewhere in the world. Sowing that kind of doubt can be damaging in its own right and embolden the anarchist types. Maybe I'm overthinking it and this was simply a very dumb move - but at the same time I find it hard to believe that many people will go along with it without some underlying strategy or goal.

He's got plenty of allies in the military, some that he put there himself. Some of the top brass are in the spotlight for a potential cover up over the death of a marine of which Yoon is possibly a part of. It'll be interesting to see how this proceeds as the judiciary is pretty much his network of cronies. This is what happens when you elect nutjobs.

It sounds like there's a good chance he may have committed some light treason.

I've been in an Asian country during a coupe that was followed by martial law. It was terrible and I wouldn't wish that experience upon anyone. You couldn't buy booze after 2pm and shops were only open within a small window so you had to get your affairs in order early in the day and preferably ahead of time because of traveling.
:lol:That would actually massively suck. Was bad enough when there was a 10pm curfew cos of Covid when I went to Seoul.

Also some country I went to had a random holiday one day where they didn't sell booze, but they didn't warn anyone and all the Brits at the hotel were seething.

This was not sudden. This was definetely pre-planned and people knew about it.

I was in Qatar last week, and was supposed to meet up with some of the South Korean military officials in Seoul for some consulting work, but even our meeting in Qatar was a bit weird. When we landed in Seoul, I was there for a total of 8 hours before they asked me to leave citing some pressing issues that they have to deal with and that I shouldn't be in the country.

They spoke to my employer, and then my employer flew me to Bangkok to be on "Stand-by" and they've been paying for me to piss around in Thailand with some colleagues until we can re-enter SK.

it looks like you upset them
