Arsenal and Manchester United will be among clubs sending scouts to the U19 European Championships to check on Greek whizkid Sotiris Ninis.
The Panathinaikos attacking midfielder has been called into the senior Greece squad this year and is a target for Europe's biggest clubs, including Arsenal and United.

He's awesome on FM but is he any good in really life?

They love him here and call him the Greek Messi. He had a good season last season after being out injured for a long while. The coach did not rush him back but he did not take long to get back into the first team. He is an exciting right midfield player and made his first team debut at the age of 16. Time will tell but is certainly an exciting prospect.

So, the question we're all asking us: Is he Ronaldo's replacement? *** *** ***

He's not that good. Cant see him hacking it in the Premiership and especially not as a replacement for Ronaldo.
The rumours when he was out injured was that he was suffering from burnout. If he suffers from that, training and playing in the Greek League, what chance has he of cutting it in the Premiership.

Speaking of Ronaldo's replacement, the Portuguese guy who translated the interview for me yesterday in the Ronaldo thread (A Sporting supporter who's been following them both since the start of their careers, and no, he's not the Chief) says that in a few years, Nani can become as good as Ronaldo in terms of effectiveness. He said, if not for Ronaldo's freak season, he saw Nani as a potentially better goalscorer than Ronaldo.

as a greek living down under ninis from panathainaikos is a brilliant player.......i think coming to the premier league will be a huge step up though , but i think he could make a real go if it.......has scored a couple of real crackers this term but dont know if he will get that much time or space abroad

he clinched the greek title only last week (suck a fat one olympiakos fans) and with a double on the horizen for "pana" he may be ready to move on

You know, there was a time when most top teams looked to England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, sometimes France for genuine talent. In the last few years we've looked for it in Angola, China, Serbia (ok, we lucked out with one there), Mexico, Senagal and Educator.

Talk about a global game.

He's not Greek. He's Albanian.

From wiki:
Sotiris Ninis (Greek: Σωτήρης Νίνης) (born 3 April 1990) in Himarë, Albania, is a Greek footballer currently playing for Panathinaikos. Ninis is Albanian-born but of Greek descent[1]. He grew up in a greek village in Albania and moved to Greece at a a very young age.

There are no Greek villages in Albania. The wiki is a load of bollocks.

His name is Sotir Nini and not Sotiris Ninis. That is just the Greek version. He had an Albanian passport until he was 16 (I think around that time) when he changed to Greek as he was offered nationality (in Greece this is rare unless they want something from foreign nationals). He accepted it as he had more chances of being a great footballer playing for Greece rather than Albania. And of course the Greek did offer their share of "bribery and reprisal" to his parents.

I'd have to disagree with you on that one. What country he plays for is irrelevant. He was playing for Panathinaikos anyway, so football wise he was made. Whether he represented Greece or Albania is irrelevant. Sounds like something the Welsh would have said if Giggs had played for England.

There is a MASSIVE (even bigger than City MASSIVE) difference between Albania - Greece(insert any country here) and Wales - England.

There's financial aspects to think of (from parents points of view, Nini was only 16). Reprisal from the Greeks regarding their status in Greece etc. So they chose the naturalisation process as the easier and best way.

There are loads of Albanians in Greece. And a Panathinaikos player would have no trouble securing a permit for him and his family if he needed to.

Let's not turn this thread into a he's Albanian, no he's Greek thread. I don't believe in nationalities anyway. I was born in the UK, and lived most of my life in Cyprus. To tell you the truth, I don't feel British, and have stopped feeling patriotic about Cyprus also. Nations are tools used to control populations. Even though I share the same passport as the guy next door, he won't hesitate to screw me over at the first opportunity. Let's just appreciate this kids talent and not bring our own egos and nationalistic pride into this. Deal?

I've never seen him play. I don't care about the guy, nor do I care about what people think about him.

What I care about is the fact that there is no Greek villages in Albania. On the contrary, the Albanian part of Greece would have still been populated by Albanians even today if it wasn't for the Genocide against them from 1921-1945 which made them leave. These Albanians whose houses and estates were confiscated moved to the south part of Albania, and they are the ones who the Greeks refer to as being "Greeks". Because they originate from a part which is in today's Greece. Despite them hating the Greeks and constantly fighting by all means of law and in all sorts of courts to reclaim back their estates.

It's true that there are loads of Albanians in Greece, and what's even more true is that more than 90% of them have nothing more than just a green card which allows them to stay, work, and pay a lot of money for it's renewal every one-two years despite most of them being there for more than 10-15 years.

That's the last I have to say about this topic.

I hope Nini becomes their national hero, that way we can truly take the piss :)

Call him Sotiris Ninis. That's his name. You don't go referring to Jay Z as Shawn.

I said it makes no difference to me and I don't care.

The difference from Jay Z is that he changed his own name. In Ninis case it was done for him :)

isnt he over 18
he can change it back if he wants to
if he doesnt care , why do you

Don't be daft. No one let's others change their name for them.

He was born Sotir Nini. He was greekonized (if that's a word) when he got his citizenship into Sotiris Ninis.

There was a big debate from Alb federation about this kid a few years ago in my country, so frankly speaking I should know more than you.

Greek star Ninis in United sights

Manchester United are building up a spy dossier on young Greek midfielder Sotiris Ninis.

The Reds are understood to have been tracking the 20-year-old Albanian-born player but have intensified their interest.

United have increased their watch on Ninis in 2010 with a scout checking out three of his matches for Panathinaikos since the New Year.

The Greek spy has been sending favourable accounts to Old Trafford. Ninis is said to be the new rising star of Greece football and has attracted interest from Real Madrid and AC Milan as well as United.

Though from Albania, Sotiris is of Greek descent and was the youngest player ever to be capped by his country and is certain to be named in the national squad for the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

He was Greek Young Footballer of the Year in 2007 and has continued to progress at a rate that has seen him become the Panathinaikos captain.

Ninis's pace, vision, technique and powerful shot would be a welcome addition to United's engine room and the youngster ticks the boxes in terms of the age group Sir Alex Ferguson is looking at to underpin his senior squad.

Panathinaikos have a get-out clause in his contract of around £10m but could be persuaded to let their star go for less.

With the possibility of alerting more buyers if Ninis stars in the World Cup, the Reds may step in early as they did with 21-year-old Mexican striker Juan Hernandez.

Meanwhile, the Sun have linked United with a £25m bid for Luka Modric.
