Solskjaer's legacy and his future

I find it staggering the extreme number of niceties being thrown his way now we've all been relived of this misery (for now) despite 99.9% of fans on here less than 12 hours ago being happy to see him burned at the stake. It's all "thank you Ole you legend" now, vomit inducing.

This isn't a manager who tried different things to try and make it work. He played the same players game in, game out, hammering after hammering and expected different results.

He promised players first-team football only to completely ignore them and go back on his word, in favour of his clear favourites.

He hasn't been able to address a single issue that we've encountered during his tenure. 3 years in, we still are a mess playing out from the back, still unable to retain possession, we still can't defend set-pieces and still look useless attacking them.

He's been backed to the tune of nearly £500 million and the quality of the squad he has left us with is greatly exaggerated. He's spunked £130 million on Maguire and Wan-Bissaka. In 3 years, our solutions up front have been Ighalo, a 36 year old Ronaldo and 34 year old Cavani. Pogba is about to leave for free for a second time. Our midfield is non existent and he's brought other players into the club for huge money and had no idea where to even play them. There's been no forward planning with his signings.

He's been in full on preservation mode in the last month, doing anything he can to cling onto a job he was never qualified for in the first place. And what did he do after getting smashed by City to try and fix the problems? He had the audacity to piss off on holiday for 9 days when this club was in absolute free-fall. Incredible.

This "experiment" has been an utter failure, and so is he as a manager. The constant smirks and smiles after poor performances was enough to make you want to throw your dinner up the wall.

A utterly terrible manager who has finally been put out of his misery.

I'm over the moon to finally see the back of Ole. Sheer ineptness aside, stubbornness and failure to pick the right coaching staff ultimately became his downfall, which is why for the love of Krishna I'll never, ever, understand why he got a free pass like no others from certain segments of our fanbase. But I suppose this is why we should never appoint a club legend as manager ever again. It fecked a lot of people's heads up.

As for his legacy, it will remain unblemished for the most part but that cowardly second half showing against City two weeks ago soured things a bit for me.

Eh? He was a monumental failure. Thank you for trying I guess? But thank you for 99, Ill always revere him for that.

He has had his chance to resign to retain his legacy for us. But now, I am not too sure, I just hope he is gone immediately and never come back Old Trafford again, at least not for this season. Can't stand his face.

Past few weeks has been the worst ever shite I've ever witness from Man Utd, and to be honest, there were couple of months every season under Ole, we have been demonstrating the same shite, but he just somehow managed to turn it around last few times to save his job. Not this time though.

I just hope few years later when we are flying high under different manager, all would be forgiven, and I'd still remember him as legend in 99.

What sort of Stockholm Syndrome has our fan base got into? And What’s with the steadying ship references? Is the ship steady right now?

We get two fecking top 4 finishes after outspending the entire league and we’re told that he has brought in stability. I’m not sure who is the most responsible for our standards slipping, the board who can’t seem to appoint a decent manager or the fanbase who will clap for a manager who got us beat 5-0 at home to Liverpool.

Thank you Ole for what? Not winning a trophy? Getting us one of our most humiliating result in the PL era?

I will always like him for his contributions as a player. But only as a player. There are zero positives from his managerial stint. Zero.

I don’t think I can get past the “Sorry for smiling” comment from the post match interview. Just showed how out of his depth he is right now and the extent to which this shitshow has been allowed to continue.

I'm absolutely delighted to see Ole go but I can't bring myself to watch this clip. I know I've called him a fraud and all that stuff on here out of sheer anger, but purely on a human level seeing him that broken at full time last night wasn't nice.

Unfortunately I have to agree with all this, although I would rather not, but yes, you are correct in everything.

Unless you are referring to dinner as the evening meal and not the mid-day meal and that is just wrong - you then you should have said tea.

Other than that; spot on.

Same for me. I find this line of complimenting very weird to say the least. It's the same as saying he "improved the squad*, yeah well with all the money spent, he better have.
I'll also only remember him as a player because as a manager, I only have negative feelings towards him. What a completely waste of time it's been. Good luck to the next fanbase of the team he'll coach. You'll be in for a tough ride

Why would you feel the need to post in this thread then?

I still dont have hard feelings. There was some good positive work during his time thats going to be overshadowed by the wheels falling off and us taking way too long to move on. The end leaves a bitter taste and paints the board in a terrible light yet again. But i hold that against the people making decisions rather than Solskjaer.

Why would you feel the need to post in this thread then?

We didn’t have a ‘Thank you Jose’ thread even though he achieved more. A Thank You Ole thread is another lowering of the standards and falling into the Gary Neville induced propaganda machinery which wants us to feel that Ole’s stint has been successful. As a fanbase, we need to be more demanding otherwise we’ll just be another Arsenal for whom getting whopped to Liverpool has become quite routine.

He did a decent rebuild of the squad to be fair. You look at the squads we had when LVG and Jose left and you look at the one we have now and you cannot say it hasn’t been a good rebuild. Regardless of how much he’s spent.

He’s a shit manager and coach though so he shouldn’t be thanked for that. I’m glad he’s going.

A legacy of trying his best to ruin careers, while putting his job above the wellbeing of the players and the club.

When he came into this club as a caretaker manager. The team was in complete disarray. The fans were depressed watching drab football year after year and the players were stuck in a rut. But when he came in, he lifted the players up and never stopped trying to be better. That PSG game was incredible. Watching that smug ratface prick and Neymar cry was One of the most satisfying victories I've seen in years. He gave us so much entertainment we've been crying out for at the start with fast attacking football. The players and fans were enjoying themselves again. He never threw any blame at the players. Not once, even when it was. He gave a shit about the club. Also managed to Get rid of most of the deadwood and rebuilt the disaster LVG and Jose left behind. The 2nd season he beat city 3 times in one season and got us top 4 again. There was hope for a bright future. Each season was an improvement, but unfortunately Ole was unlucky in not Winning any silverware. He came close so many times and sadly it ends in failure. Despite that, there was still a bit of hope that he'd get a great squad together and finally get us back to the top. Had one of the best summer's ever imo, in getting a world class defender, a Right Winger we've needed since Nani left and one of the best player ever play the game. This was the season that for the first time I fully believed we could win some trophies. Sadly after a flying start, everything fell apart after the lost to West Ham. It's clear He's taking us as far as he could. He's been extremely lucky everytime he got backed into a corner and now the luck has run out. The board was indecisive which has probably cost us top 4 this season. In saying a that, given how ugly it's gotten recently, he's left the next manager with a much better squad that's hungry for success. Every single United fan wanted him so badly to succeed. Thanks for the memories Ole. Best of luck to him in the future.

What garbage  You couldn’t wait to write that could you ? Getting anxious and twitchy to write your thankyou and telling about your emotions. You aren’t that important mate. Our season is done because of this manager. This fraud of a manager has left us in a fecking mess. Absolutely played with our emotions and conned us. I have no sympathy for him especially the way he treated some of our players. His treatment of DVB is a sacking in itself. You can wipe off your crocodile tears and delete your sorry of a post. You have had your 2 seconds of fame. No one is buying it.

Well said - shame it has to end like this but I thank Ole for the good work done over the past couple of years and whatever anyone says I know he leaves us with the best squad we had since Fergie retired

Pathetic but not unsurprising to see some of the replies in this thread from the toxic part of the fan base - yes Ole deserves some criticism but there are 10 other threads for that

He's left us in a worse state than he found us. Better squad but spent nearly £500m. Progress.

worse than Jose left us? Not tru

exactly.

I am surprised at the amount of hate he is getting over here. Some comments are just too much. The board should have let him go earlier this season, he kept trying but I guess he’s not good enough to take the team to the next level. There were good games, good runs and I, for one, hoped that he could build on what was done in the last couple of years and this summer’s signings. Unfortunately he failed to do that.

this does not mean that his status as a club great changes. Some younger fans might not know exactly what Ole means for this club (it’s ok, they just don’t). We’ve seen lots of ex-players fail at managing their clubs. Lampard is an example. The difference is that chelsea’s board was faster to react.

i think he left the team in bad form and not bad shape. The dressing room is not toxic, the group of players we have is good and under a more tactically gifted manager can actually achieve something.

these are tough times for the club. I really hope we go and sign the right manager.

ole is still part of the club’s history, beautiful history, and his legacy will remain as such.

Both of these posts spot on. Too many in our fanbase have a seriously misguided sense of loyalty.

His legacy is being a failure everywhere he goes. Even the Molde fans had had enough of him.

Thank you Ole for spending 130m on a pair of defenders who wouldn’t get into any of the top teams.

Thank you Ole for your man management of VDB, Lingard, Sancho etc

Thank you Ole for instilling the “United DNA“, coaching, structure, tactics and philosophy along with your pals.

Thank you Ole for being the smiling PR face of the Blazers and Woody hatchet job.

Thank you Ole for making Maguire captain, in the footsteps of legends like Robson, Bruce and Keane

Thank you Ole for nearly 4 years of trophyless accomplishment.

Thank you Ole for stringing together such an absymal run of results that our nightmare can finally end.

He's left us in a worse state than he found us. Better squad but spent nearly £500m. Progress.

How has he left us worse? People need to go to Dec'18 and look at what we were saying. People believed it would take 3-5 years to fix the mess up, we were willing to sell everyone barring DDG and Rashford and close to half the starting XI was on it's last legs - Valencia, Young, Smalling, Matic, Alexis.

People do counter by saying, "He spent 500m". I believe he spent close to 100m more than Mou and LVG but had 1 additional summer window. Now, here's a question, even forgetting about price inflation, with all the powers of hindsight, which players would you have bought for 100m on their teams to make their sides this good?

The thing is, he genuinely did good in a lot of things over the first 2.5 years here. Ofcourse there were some issues, but on the whole, he did better than most of us expected from the man taking over Mou's mess. It just sucks that it had to end this way and I dont think there's any shame in not being able to take the final step.

I'd always remember his managerial time as being decent - not successful but not a failure as well

I would thank him if he resigned a month ago. Now, too much dommage have been done. At the end of the day he was here for the paycheck.

And yes, it’s possible to walk away from some millions when you are already very rich and you pretend to love the club. Some have done it : Gattuso walked away, Zidane too because he wasn’t happy and is a proud man, and many others with less money then Ole.

Harry Maguire is the captain and we look absolutely shambolic. Rebuild...my grannies arse.

Sorry, not trying to single you out, mate.

Bitter times and whatnot.

If he was sacked in the summer, he would have gone with lot of respect. As usual board delayed it so long that most were just sick of watching him.

Could have been same with Jose too, had we sacked him after second season when he was showing signs of toxicity, he would have got lot of credit.

This board is so shit, it makes everything worse.

As much as I've been advocating Ole to be sacked since last season, him becoming our interim manager and then given a permanent contract is easily my best moment as a United fan since SAF. On par with Ronaldo coming back.

Yeah, I don't see how any other competent manager would've done worse with 400m, would probably have done better.

3 years, 0 trophy. Spent half of 1 billion pound, we're still a mess, and have an unbalance squad, leaving the club with 10M pounds compensation, comparing to Gattuso and Zidane who were leaving club without taking a single penny. And someone in here still thank him about that??? Legend my arse!!

Agreed.

It's inevitable that he'll be sacked as he's clearly out of his depth but I'll always keep Ole in high regards after what he did for us both as a player and a manager. The end of a manager at a club rarely look beautiful but let's not forget the good moments. I had plenty of those last two seasons. And he left us with a very good squad, minus the midfield of course.

Thank you Ole and the best.

No worries.

I agree that Maguire isn't a top defender, but in totality I'd definitely take a Varane-Maguire partnership over any of the other partnerships in defence we've had in recent years. In fact we are stronger (player wise) in every position compared to the squads Jose and LVG left behind. It's just that our manager and coaches do not know what to do with the squad.

Glad of the response people had on this thread. Would have ridiculous if people actually were thanking him for this shit show.

Club legend and great player, but an awful manager and his 3 years have been a waste of time.

Being 12 when we signed him from Molde, I remember pretty much everything he did. He had 4 great years as a super sub at the club, winning us the UCL with the tip of his toe. That was magic.

The 2000’s especially after Beckham left he did a job at RM, but was unfortunately plagued with injuries after.

I thank OGS for being a very important person to me in my late childhood, and for being a good role model for how to put the team first. He was never good enough for our first eleven, but he kept doing the job as a substitute until he was crippled with injuries. That status will never go away.

I hate the board and the Glazers for what they did to him this season. They have ridiculed him and embarrassed him infront of millions of fans, making him a «villain» in the process. He should never have started this season in charge of the team, he should have been moved up to the offices in some other role.

This club is a shambles and I hope people will forget the last two months of Ole quickly and that Arnold is more competent than Woodward.

Also, thanks to the players he trusted for absolutely throwing him under the bus by putting out dreadful performances for the last 6 months. Noone mentioned, noone forgot.

It’s the opposition fans who should be starting ‘Thank you Ole’ threads at this moment. That says a lot about his management tenure here.

Thanks Ole, all the best kid. Tried you best and brought a love back to the club after a very toxic period, left us with a good squad and optimism for the future.

His legacy hopefully is making fans finally realize how important an actual manager for a team is. You cannot just spend hundreds of millions every season without actual vision and gameplan for the team, especially now that other teams can spend almost as much but with much better managers

That's 4 bad appointments for us since SAF (with each of their own ups and downs, still failure nonetheless), whether woodward and friends can finally learn something from this is still unknown

Remember, folks. It stands for a reason that there's no "i" in Ole's name.
Now compare that to his predecessors.

So thank you Ole, for not having "i" in your name. Not like those selfish jerks and posters.
