Solskjaer target 5 signings; 6 players could leave [BBC, Telegraph, Guardian]

If he's not satisfied after this transfer window he should say so in press conferences and not go with the happy with the squad rhetoric. It will continue harming the team if he's just a yes man.
Nope. He wouldn't. He would (and should) take it up in meetings behind closed doors, but I doubt he would ever take it up in the media.

Could you imagine?
That'd cheese the players and the board off in one quick move, and have absolutely zero benefit.

He'll have to save it for the interviews and books in years to come I'm afraid.

Agree, I think Ole is a very professional person and will keep his positive act through good or bad times. I'm 100% certain that so far in the window he feels let down by the board. I just hope people direct the blame in the right direction if this season goes sour.

No it's no secret the huge debt we are in.
It's a serviceable debt that we could clear off a lot of it one go but that wouldn't be sensible. We're instead using those monies for the team. So, the debt is irrelevant. That was my point. We're not hiding any secret debt other than what we have. We can afford to spend.

I have doubts about Solksjaer ability as a manager but the board is doing him no favors by just adding Wan Bissaka and Daniel James in this window. We are woefully short of quality in a number of positions but they keep taking the cheaper option by constantly renewing dross in Young, Smalling, Jones, Mata etc.

The board are definitely being stingey. We've identified the players we need. We have a clear run at all of them. They all want to join. It's just a matter of agreeing fees with the clubs.

When we have the major holes in our squad addressed we can afford to walk away from deals. We are not in that situation right now. We need to fix these issues this window. The next 3 weeks will unequivocally show just how serious Ed and the Glazers are about getting the team back to the top.

Good post which I agree and find the part in bold particularly intriguing and am very curious to how these next 3 weeks pan out. Hoping Woody surprises me and they go well mate.

That’s exactly it and some fans don’t seem to understand that. We can’t walk away from these deals because we have no other options with better quality available. And now from this stalling if we do get Maguire or Bruno Fernandes they have missed the entire pre season and will be expected to fit straight into the team.

This last bit has always happened though.
Yorke was signed a few days before we started with a 0-0 at West Ham one season as one example.

Van Persie was very late on too.

Exactly 100% correct. We'll see how the next few weeks unfold.

It's very simple, we have £30 million left in the kitty without sales, so we're waiting to see if Lukaku is going before we decide how to spend it, if he goes then we'll have enough for Maguire, if he doesn't then we'll get someone cheaper, or just not bother, and the £30 m will probably go towards a bid for Fernandes or Longstaff. It's fairly clear no one else is leaving to add to the funds.

There's nothing very simple about that. You're basing your entire premise on an article from a journo who has consistently been abysmal ever since Moyes fecked off.

It’s really annoying how things are going, look at the top 5 richest clubs in the world and look how they are being run (everything included not only transfers) and look at us..

We've only spent much more than £100 million (net) once, the difference this year is that no one wants the players we don't, so we can't add to the kitty.

I'm not sure what people are expecting, Ole said what he wanted to happen, yet we've sold no one, and dragged our heels over the two players we have got, we're not suddenly going to buy three players for £150 million +.

Imo the best we can hope for is Lukaku out for £70 million, then Maguire in for £75 million, and us getting Fernandes for a low ball fee late on the window, but the payoff is that Lukaku doesn't get replaced, which would be better than the alternative that is staring us in the face just now.

No chance this is the case.
We're obviously bumbling around, but we're not waiting on the Lukaku sale to fund Maguire!

Personally I'm not so sure, we have seemed to be waiting for something to happen first, and this morning the news of us rejecting Inter's latest Lukaku bid,
after last nights talk of us looking for 'cheaper' CB alternatives, imo the two deals are very much linked.

I actually think we are done in this transfer window.
Im not expecting any new players.

And this begs a question. I know Ed is an idiot but he is not stupid. So does lack of transfers mean that he does not trust Ole and he is saving money for the next manager?
Or maybe we cannot afford these fees? Or maybe the Glazers do not want to spend as to them success on the pitch (or lack of it) does not influnece revenues. So there is no point in investing.

I'm convinced the Glazers are after top 4, for the money. Ambition stops there, this I'm also convinced of. We all know that profit is their main agenda, and in some aspects it's tied to our success on the pitch. But I also believe that they know the money that needs investing to actually win the PL or CL is far more extensive than the rewards for doing so, hence I don't believe that they are willing to invest further than CL qualifacation.

What we've done so far isn't going to make us sure of top 4. It'll be a 3 way slog with Chelsea and Arsenal.

But hardly anyone has outspent us this summer, and certainly not in England.

United have spent money... alot of money.
Equitable to what city have spent and more than Liverpool over the last few years.

So saying the Glazers won't invest further than CL qualification is absolute garbage and nonsense. A shed load has been invested poorly

United are not where they are because of lack of money spent.

Fans won’t turn on ole though. The second this gets to breaking point the fans will get on the boards back this time I’m sure of it. If no more transfers are incoming (which I’m sure isn’t the case) and things go wrong then the blame is on Ed.

Isnt CL revenue around 50-60mil?? That buys you a decent player these days. I think that as long as sponsorhip deals keep coming in they will be not bother with CL money.

It’s not that simple at all, given that if Leicester had accepted out £70m bid for Harry we’d already be well over this supposed budget.

I think this chap, and a few of us are doing the equivalent that we sometimes do in the match threads of trying to reverse jinx.

"We'll definitely not score now...nope, definitely no chance"

"Yes, 1-0"

If the season starts and the club can’t get a quality center back for Ole. They should be ashamed of themselves tbh.

There will be a lot of moving closer to the end of the transfer window, I'd expect at least three to leave and hopefully two arriving.

We're going to have to take a hit on the wages but I expect at least two defenders to leave if not three.

Axel is basically like a new addition and I think we will secure Maguire once Leicester find a suitable replacement. They aren't going to sell until they have someone in line.

Ed continually talks about how much rich and successful United are but rarely ever financially backs it up.

He talks the talk but doesnt walk the walk

Starting to be convinced by the people who are saying the Glazers are "Arsenal-ing" us. Doing just enough to get us top 4.

We've spent lots of money and wasted it. While I disagree with the veracity of the idea, I couldn't blame them if I were them in the unlikely event it's true.

Right! All talk to shut us up then followed by excuses.. maybe he shouldn’t have told Klopp our club is like an adult Disney land, because he’s one of the few managers that can make average/little above average players punch above their weight.. hopefully ole is going to surprise us this season!

Why is that ? They are milking the club's money, how would you not blame them if they are doing that ? it's not like we have a sugar daddy pouring money into the club and not getting results for it.

And "wasted it" ... who's taking the decisions ? isn't it them ? doesn't the responsability lies solely on them ?

Well this is obviously nonsense. I say ‘obviously’ because thankfully, the entire world has seen us spend lots and lots of money on transfers under Woodward. This is not an area we can leave down to speculation.

I don’t mind what Ole doing but no premiership team will fear this squad.

Everyone will need to be patient...which is never going to happen sadly.

I agree we need to be patient and we need have faith in Ole and hope that Woody will get us a few decent signings in the next few weeks. This rebuilding job will take several windows and as you said patience is the key. As long as there is visible progression, I am willing to be patient but I feel Woody needs to try to give Ole the best platform from which to succeed mate
