Solskjaer target 5 signings; 6 players could leave [BBC, Telegraph, Guardian]

No disagreements on Woody being incompetent and the Glazers being leeches, but the bolded part is United Exceptionalism and is sadly out of tune with the times. In the last 15 years, we have never had more pull than a club like Madrid even at our peak, and the times where we'd storm in and players would be jumping to join us are in our rear view (for now). It's ridiculous to assume - especially after the dumpster fire of the last few years - that we can walk into the negotiating room and throw our balls on the table and expect the other team to acquiesce to our demands because their player so badly wants to join us. Whether people will admit it or not, we are challenging for the top 4 next year, not the title, and it will probably be 3 years before we can put together a legitimate title run. We can still lean on our rich history, but the footballing landscape has changed and we are no longer one of the biggest fish around.

Manchester united are still one the biggest names in world football and a huge draw for most players ,
If players of that caliber of Maguire and Wan Bissaka are not prepared to move and pressure a move quickly then move on to the next targets .They are nothing exceptional by any standards .
The biggest problem apart from the Glaziers and Woodward seems to be an overstaffed and incompetent scouting system .
That 100m report is the club briefing potential clubs that we are not going to pay ridiculous fees for their players. I'm sure we have the money, it's just a negotiation strategy.

I would think that its accurate . The Glaziers will sell up inside the next year or two . Like all dodgey landlords they will spruce the place up with a cheap lick of paint .

Why on earth would he leave? He's a grown man. Not someone who is likely to throw a hissy fit because we haven't landed our targets yet.

I really dont understand why everyone is panicking so much. It's not as if our targets have all been acquired. None of them have.

We could announce De Ligt tomorrow and the whole mood of the club changes instantly.

I believe Conte left Juve because he felt they were not backing him in the transfer market after winning them multiple titles including going a whole season unbeaten.

Ironically Juve have since then spent quite a lot of money on transfers.

I'm going to brief all eBay members that I only have £3.74 to spend so I can get some of their items for cheaper. Sounds logical.

100m, 500m. Makes no difference if Woodward can't get deals done.

Wonder who the 5 coming in are
James
Mata
AWB
?
?
Wonder who the 6 going are
Herrera
Wilson
Pogba
Lukaku
?

If you're including players signing contracts like Mata, then there's Young and Jones in the first lot so there's your five :)

Valencia also left, so that'd be your six. Doubt we are keeping Darmian though and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the back of Rojo or Bailly (but not both) if we sign a CB.

ye forgot about Young and Jones, ah well we are nearly there then

This past month has broken my hopes for our signings tbh. New realistic summer that I think is actually going to happen is...

Incomings:
  • Daniel James - £15m
  • Aaron Wan Bissaka - £55m
  • Bruno Fernandes/Tielemans - £60m
Outgoings:
  • Ander Herrera - free
  • Antonio Valencia - free
  • Matteo Darmian - £5m
Don't see anything else happening. Good old 3 in 3 out policy. "Doing things in the market that others can only dream of"....

Sensible stuff.

I might rock up to a Ferrari auction and loudly proclaim that I'm only willing to pay a few grand - thus getting a beautiful, luxury car on the cheap :)

Actually, no. Ferrari's aren't British are they...?

You Forgot Pogba , Lukaku and De gea
The old 3 in 6 out

The old 3 in 6 out
I dont think any of them are leaving this summer. We'll make De Gea see out his contract, neither Juve or Madrid will pay close to what's needed for Pogba, inter won't pay what needed for Lukaku especially if Icardi isnt sold (which he won't be, only team I see him going to would be Chelsea but they're transfer banned).

In:
James
Bissaka
Fernandes
Maddison
A striker or AMR

Out:
Valencia
Herrera
Lukaku
Pogba
Pereira
Darmian

Starting 11:

De Gea

AWB Lindeløf Bailly Shaw

Fernandes McTominay Maddison

A lot of rotation Rashford Martial/Sanchez

If you know you will have a transfer budget limitation, then all the more to have a smart, efficient and well developed football infrastructure that identifies, recruits and develops players from 16 to 23 with the ultimate goal of being a first team player. In addition to that, you'll need to identify players within your system who can be sold and provide you capital (money or player) for your use.

The only "good" thing, for now, is that we haven't seen other clubs make moves. Ole cannot alienate any players at the moment because United don't have good depth to begin with and if United can't move a player (i.e. Lukaku, Pogba, etc.) then we'll need them to have their head straight and give the required effort.

Yeah if Ole was only being given £100m depending on sales, you’d have seen a fire sale on all the dead wood.

A centre-half would have gone in week 1.

Not much news that we don't already have, but this piece ran on The Athletic today (written by Sam Pilger - not sure if he has legit sources or is just speculating, but the Athletic only publishes highly sourced material for other sports like the NBA and NFL).

Absolutely conviced that midfield signings hinge on Pogba's future, also if we miss out as expected on our top 3 CB targets then would be surprised to see us sign one

Hate to sound so negative but Utd's hesitation in this transfer market is costing us yet again. We are definitely not a club who make snap decisions

It’s still reasonably early days, but it’s hard not to have a bit of a sinking feeling. I was hoping for once we’d come out of the traps flying and really get some decisive business done quickly this summer.

If Ole is not backed this summer, I firmly believe the old Trafford crowd will finally turn hostile towards Woodward and the glazers, it will not be a pleasant place for them.

If we are really working on a 100m budget then we shouldn't be spending half of it on a RB. Go for players who are young and on cheap or players with a minimum fee clause.are on sale. Then sell players who want out or having settled down. If we bought Meunier (25m), Toby (25m), Hector Herrera(free), Rabiot (free) and Bergwijn (40m) with the promise of us promoting Chong, Gomes, Tuanzebe and co then the fans would still be happy and the club would stick to a tight budget. If of course we sell Lukaku, DDG, Sanchez and Pogba then the situation changes with us bringing in the likes of Maignan (31m), Bruno Fernandes (70m), James (20m), Rondon (15m) and Brooks (40m)

It really doesn't make sense spending 65% of our budget on a winger from the championship and a RB.

Please do that

Ya feckin tease. Been waiting for you to do so since you first posted!

As he said nothing particularly new, but here are the key points:

- Ole made it clear to the board that a raft of early signings were imperative, and the board concurred.

- The opportunity to male early signings and have a proper preseason as desired, has virtually passed.

- The club is finding it harder to operate in the transfer market than ever. When they signed Pogba, they had already signed Micky Targarian, Bailly, and Ibra, and The Pogs was convinced to sign because he believed the club were headed back to the elite.

- Players have doubts about the “faltering club”. Doubts about how long Ole will remain in charge, and doubts about giving up CL football when the trajectory of the club seems interminably downwards.

- United are able to offer lucrative contracts, which means agents are keen to talk to them. But the stability of the club is a major concern, and many are reticent to parachute their players into such an environment.

- Sancho wanted to sign, but the failure of CL football and the unconvincing appointment of Solskjær means he wants to remain in Germany for at least another year. Dortmund quoted 100m for him, and United don’t want to pay that.

- United have offered 35m for AWB, then upped to 35m plus 15m in variables. But Palace wants 50m up front.

- Top priority is defence. And a commanding CB. De Ligt is most wanted but United think they will miss out on him. Second it KK from Napoli, but Napoli don’t want to sell and have quoted 100m. Which has led United to Maguire. They were quoted 60m last summer and baulked at that. This time around LCFC want 80. United not prepared to go above 60. CB pursuit is not looking good.

- United have a lot of money to spend and while they are prepared to spend it, they refuse to be taken advantage of. Which presents a problem because clubs and agents know they are desperate for signings.

- There is still optimism it can be a productive summer, but some are preparing for a disastrous window like last summer.

So now what? We have the money,we don't have the money.Just more confirmation that papers/journo's know absolutely nothing.

Having worked in a large corporate which has been bought out 3 times during 20 years, there will be signs of belt tightening. At times we couldn’t even buy a packet of pens

Been there as well. At one point we were bringing in pens from home to work with. I also bought a printer cable because we needed it badly to work at the office and the IT department were dragging their feet to buy one.

There again, if the 100m thing is true then why on earth would we go for British talent. Everyone knows that English clubs are rich and would often only sell for ridiculous prices. It really makes no sense spending 65% of our budget on a winger from the championship and a RB.

We're doomed if our 4th choice CB is suddenly in the starting lineup. Or is this a League cup lineup?

This makes sense. Players with ambition don't want to play for a club in free fall, they don't to come play for the Molde coach. This window will be even worse than last year.

Won't be long before the likes of Wolves or Leicester overtake us.

At this point our pre season is going to have to look like his first month in charge to persuade incoming players. That way they can point to lack of fitness for reverting back to a cautious tactical approach, which saw a dramatic drop off in results.

We have said this for a few years and the OT have barely done anything.

I guess maybe it's time to start downgrading my expectations by a lot and expect Ole to get sacked within the year. Then we bring in a new, more exciting and marketable coach, players start coming in and maybe by that point our structure's been fixed too. It just looks like absolutely everyone is trying to make Ole fail there.

This ties in a bit with what Philb De Brun said, the club are basically bidding below what they know other clubs want for their players, just to show the are trying to do something, the defence thing especially, KK was always valued at that so just don't bother if you won't pay it, Maguire is valued at £80 m so lets waste time trying for him when we know we won't pay anything like that, AWB is valued at £50 m so let's make a bid we know won't be accepted, if they'd valued him at £60 m, we'd no doubt be bidding £50 m.

You can only make a 'raft' of early signings if you're prepared to spend the money, have all the players identified early on, know they want to come, and have the people in place to make it happen, we clearly have non of that.

It's no wonder Ed was so keen to get rid of Jose, he'd have hung out to dry by now, Ole will just smile & make out all is well.

Or, you open a bid below what you know they'll accept to set a starting point for negotiations? Hardly an uncommon strategy.

Of course, I wait with baited breathe to see if we actually meet the valuations for these players, we'll see.

But I tend to be more on the side that Ole is an unattractive manager to incoming players, we look like a bad club to sign for, the spending has been reigned in, and Ed is just a propaganda merchant.

Saw an article today hummels supposedly turned us down for dortmund even though we offered him more.

Nobody ever said we were linked to him. Think the story is complete bollocks, but isn’t it fun to kick us while we’re down?

Saw an article today hummels supposedly turned us down for dortmund even though we offered him more.

Us being turned down by players generally I can definitely believe. We're not in the CL and, more importantly, we've been a mess for years with no real reason to think that's going to change beyond hope.

If I was a player like AWB that's no problem, Manchester United is a huge step up regardless. Once you're at a level where you can have multiple opportunities to join various big clubs though, why risk coming here? If I could I'd wait a year and if I couldn't I'd look for a more stable club.
