Solskjaer target 5 signings; 6 players could leave [BBC, Telegraph, Guardian]

Yep, we haven't won anything since 2016-17 season, I think we're a little low on cash.

We aren't low on cash, but Woodward wants to save money at every opportunity, even it means our on pitch performance goes to pot.

Ole is a yes man. No way he walks. And the club will stick by him cos that's what we do. Especially if he has another good 2 months and beats City or Liverpool or someone. Then everyone will say oh it's not his fault he never got his targets. Or it's the players. Etc. He needs another transfer window.....and on we go again....

So when are going to bring in some leaders to compliment all these young British targets or are we going down the arsenal route of happy competing for 4th, having a frail mentality and making a profit on any of the young players that come good?

Are you saying Ole is naive or stupid to want all business done prior to preseason?

A certain amount of naivety coming from good intentions. There is little reason for clubs to let players go in mid-June. They would rather leak rumours in the hope of attracting other bids. The value these days is at the back end of the window

I think Real is quite an interesting comparison actually. What's really impressed me is that they knew back in January that they had problems with their team, and they immediately set about putting that right. They have identified their targets and began negotiation months ago, so that when the window opens they are signing players left right and centre. Organised, efficient, professional.
A million miles from our greedy kid in a sweet shop approach...

Until they all flop next season. There are no guarantees in football. Hazard could have a slow start and the Bernabeu get on his back. Jovic may be in the bench behind Benzema.

Only a year or so ago they signed Theo Hernandez to play LB and now they’ve signed Mandy cos he didn’t work out. On the right they signed Odriozola who was really promising to replace Achraf who really promising. Neither are guaranteed to succeed there.

Same story in midfield as Ceballos, Lorrente, Illaramendi etc have all come and gone.

The stark difference with Madrid vs Utd is how quickly they move on if a signing doesn’t succeed. We moved on quickly from Memphis and Schneiderlin but it’s unusual for us to act so decisively.

We don't *need* to buy English players - if we had a decent scouting network and DoF, there are bargains to be had and deals to be done. How many have RM already signed?

Madrid are an anomaly. Players are desperate to play for them. The rules dont apply.

No we dont need to buy English players, and I'm sure we have a huge database of foreign players. That's the strategy the club seem to want to follow, but I'm sure we are not bound by it.

I suspect what we will end up with are 2 or 3 emerging talents from this country and a couple of more expensive signings which could come from anywhere

I'd love to believe that, but all the more reason to make a statement and just pay up for quality. It pains me that we are no longer at the top table and are seemingly haggling over what amounts to 'peanuts' in football terms (Eg. just pay the 45m up front for AWB), while giving new contracts to our deadwood. It's at best a lack of planning, and worst total incompetence.

I hold out little hope for the rest of the window, and as a consequence next season. We could end up free fall.

The haggling that you refer to might make the difference between us having one extra signing this summer.

We'd be idiots paying the asking price, especially in situations such as Wan-Bissaka or Diop where we seemingly have no competition for the player.

I was thinking along these lines a few days ago too.

I asked myself:

If I was in Ole’s position and I wasn’t happy with the ambition the club was showing and has how Woodward was dealing with my transfer requests, would I walk?

Would I give up the chance of a lifetime for the (perceived) greater good of the club?

The answer for me was no, as I would believe that I could still turn it around.

But I think you’re right - if he left before the new season started, the protests from the fans would far surpass the green and gold campaign a few years ago. Whether or not that would put enough pressure on the Glazers to sell or get rid of Woodward though, is another matter.

Why on earth would he leave? He's a grown man. Not someone who is likely to throw a hissy fit because we haven't landed our targets yet.

I really dont understand why everyone is panicking so much. It's not as if our targets have all been acquired. None of them have.

We could announce De Ligt tomorrow and the whole mood of the club changes instantly.

Yeah - we stick with managers alright - we've seen that the last few years
What a strange thing to say.

I think the issue is that even IF we landed De Ligt, and it's a massive IF, the question then would be which RB, two x CMs, RW, LW and CF are we signing?

Let's face it, we probably need 3/4 players minimum to all come in and hit the ground running if we want to finish 4th-2nd....to win a title/major trophy I think would take 6-8 new players all to come in and be successful

I don’t know. All of our managers post Fergie have been given longer than they deserved in my view.

I think practically all of them shouldn't have been hired to begin with. Any manager that uses Fellaini as their plan A should have been a sign for us to stay away from them.

We wont win anything next season. That wont be our objective.

I think the fans in general are slightly overstating how bad this team is. Only slightly mind - we need strengthening.

For me though fitness was a major issue at the end of last season and I expect that Ole will address that. Enough for us to finish top four in any case.

This is the first summer since Ferguson went that I get the feeling from the club that they truly recognise that we need to change our philosophy. No more mercenaries and no more paying players that dont deserve it.

Not sure what the most irritating much quoted comment is this summer.

  • Ole is a "yes" man
  • Ole might walk out
  • Wan Bissaka has no attacking ability
The first two seem to be over emotional nonsense based on us not having yet bought someone substantial, and the third one seems to come from people who either never watch him, or ignore it's a Hodgson Palace team.

It's just frustration. If we have 20 straight wins in the league from game 1, people would go quiet but well... haha just the thought of it makes me happy. I hope we can get some interesting names though, Ole deserves to have a go with a team that is motivated to win things. If everyone is crazy motivated, Pogba will have to do something too, I am convinced of it. It's a group effect.

Having a proper right back, for the first time in about 8 years will be a huge plus.
If we can follow that up with a right attacker we'd instantly lose the massively lop sided approach we've had for years.

But Van Aanholt doesn't struggle going forward in the palace team and there was no difference in performance going forward from Bissaka with the U21's last night either, he's signing for United whether any fan disagrees with it or not but let's not make up lies that he doesn't currently have a weakness on the ball, it's was the same lies when Darmian signed for us and there were fans acting then like he didn't have a weakness going forward.

Somebody who has close relation to Ole. Tell him to buy Federico Chiesa and has to act quick. Just bid 80 - 100 mill euro or a price they will accept. This boy has world class pontential and his current level is really high right now. I rate Joao Felix really high, but this boy Chiesa take the cake. Mark mine words. He can be as good as Pirlo or even better. The way he handle the ball is just amazing and on the highest tempo. He is explosive and his ball skills and vision. A player that will bring you up from the seat. You will get excite watching him.

A run to buy category. A real deal and the next big in world football. Mark the name and mine words. Im 100 % sure about this. Act it quick United. A early Christmas present for United fans. Fedrico Chiesa from Fiorentina.

Darmian hasn't even been over the half way line for us. Manchester United, who have 90% of the ball in most home games!

Wan Bissaka has out assisted Van Aanholt in a Palace team, where the latter is primarily a wing back, sometimes filling in at left back.

It really is quite incredible the patience of OT fans, especially when you compare with ten years ago with the green and gold campaign where the discontent was palpable and yet we were actually competing for the league and champions league at that time.

We've said it about Ed many times over six years but this time it really must be make or break. We're in a position where are two biggest rivals are winning/competing for every trophy and we're closer to Wolves and Everton than we are to them. There has to be genuine signs of progress otherwise it surely must get ugly. Spending big money is a must but the worrying contract extensions for the likes of Rojo, Jones, Smalling, Young are sending red flags flying.
It's not patience, it's apathy. The green and gold campaign proved to us all that fan protests at United have little to no impact on the way the club is run. The manager is low hanging fruit but Woodward and the owners are as unaffected by criticism as Mike Ashley is at Newcastle.

In relation to Darmian I mean when he first signed for us but hadn't yet played for us it was evident from how he performed for his previous club and country that he looked weak going forward but many united fans wouldn't have it and were acting like it wasn't true, it's similar with Bissaka, whether it's in his own half or in the opponents, it's clearly evident when he has the ball at his feet that it's not exactly a great strength of his, he reminds me a lot of Valencia on the ball in his latter years at right back.

We are Manchester UTD and we should approach a club / player / agent with a reasonable offer + an attractive agent and player package and give them 36 hours to say yes or no .
If its no move on to next target
It wont be NO very often.

Fine, but you're going to miss out on every player who thinks they might be in with a good chance of a move to a team that's doing better than us, or whose club thinks there's a good chance of a bigger offer coming in from another team. Sadly when we call up saying "We are Manchester UTD", clubs are entitled to say "That's nice... now feck off". There's nothing to stop you pursuing your strategy, it's just that on average you're going to end up buying players from a lot further down your shortlist. On the plus side you'd seal what transfers you did make earlier in the window.

I can sort of see what has driven you to this position - the impression from the last half dozen summers is that Woodward has spent most of the window fixated on an unattainable top target and then been clueless when that doesn't come off. But I don't think the answer to this is to cleave to the other pole and try to unilaterally abolish negotiation.

It's not patience, it's apathy. The green and gold campaign proved to us all that fan protests at United have little to no impact on the way the club is run. The manager is low hanging fruit but Woodward and the owners are as unaffected by criticism as Mike Ashley is at Newcastle.

There were couple of reasons it didn't work. Firstly, fans were still going to games and buying merchandise. If it doesn't affect them monetarily they are less likely to care. Secondly, it wasn't a sustained campaign, it came and it went. And thirdly former players were reluctant to join in.
Players like Neville, Rio go on air and are happy to criticize Woodward and the board. But they don't want to criticize the root of the problem which is the Glazers.
I feel this would be a lot more successful if the former players went straight at the Glazers and led the charge for them to sell the club. I doubt they would do it, as some still have ties to the club and that could get messy.
But it's getting to a point where the club is in clear decline. There's only for so long that Woodward can keep on raking in sponsors with the club missing out of the CL and always being mired in negativity.

Hoping the maddison rumors are true. If so Leicester won't sell maguire to us also and I see Alderweireld as a sensible stop gap until a top CB appears.

How would people feel about this window if we kept pogba

I share the exact same thoughts as you do.

This club is just a fecking mess from top to bottom.

Worst thing is, the Glazers don’t see anything wrong with it. As long as Ed is making them money, that is all that matters to them. Money 1st, football success 2nd.

Pretty much mate, good to see the fans trying to do something about it again, all the stuff on Twitter last night, get the protests going, you can already see a lot of the locals only do away days now, weekend games are packed but midweek been a lot of empty seats.

Hit them on their marketing platforms and in their pockets, do as much as we can (although not overly to much we can do) but something needs to change.

State of us at the minute, arguing over 5m for Wan Biasska, which we make in about 10 minutes on a match day.

Crazy mate, the way it's run is absolutely disgraceful, how Woodward can turn up to a game without getting lynched is beyond me.

Meh, lots to prove from those players. Exciting and daunting at the same time.

Ogden saying we have just 100m to spend this summer. After just fred and dalot last year. If true, I'll say it over and over again, Woodward has absolutely ruined the club. Even the 'he's great at financial side' argument can't hold up

IF it’s true then I’d say it’s more on the owners than Woodward. He can only authorize what he’s been told

I understand the need of RB and hope it gets sorted soon but we really need to upgrade our midfield, even with Pogba we are weak.

Pogba
Matic
Fred
McTominey
Perriera

Out of that list we are lacking a controlling midfielder and someone with a bit of bite in there.

I think we need 2 midfielders to give us a good chance. Few games last year we got overran and dominated.

I hope we spend big on midfield.

If this was the case I'd be pretty happy, those 5 signings would transform the identity of our club in one window for pretty reasonable money.

At this moment in time, would probably snap your hand off haha

My worry with James is that he seems to be a left winger, have we bought him to play on the right hand side, just hope it is not another square peg in a round hole.

The way it is at the moment, not massively confident we are going to get more than two more signings in but here's hoping.

Yup, for sure. Get the feeling for the first time that the Glazers are actively looking to sell. Would explain a lot.
Having worked in a large corporate which has been bought out 3 times during 20 years, there will be signs of belt tightening. At times we couldn’t even buy a packet of pens

Yea, it’s basic economics really isn’t it. If you are looking to sell a business you aren’t going to plough loads of money into it at the same time. The more I think of it the more I definitely think that’s what’s happening, I wouldn’t now be surprised to see very few new signings unless we sell players first.

That report from Ogden is hard to fathom considering half the budget will be used up on AWB and factor in James there's barely any remainder.

I think there's some truth to the financial constraints however since it seems the Sancho rumours fell apart when the numbers were mentioned. The glazers have failed this club where it matters, commercial success means nothing if it doesn't replicate itself onto the field.
