I mean we are spending £20m for him, its not like we are breaking the bank. He is there to raise the floor. He is an upgrade to both Fred and McTominay.

Pretty much.

If he can defend a bit, show for the ball and give it to somebody else in the same colour shirt consistently, he's better qualified to cover for Casemiro than anyone else in our first team squad.

his passing is what excites me. Having someone who can consistently available to receive a pass (not-McTominay), and calmly passed the ball to his team mate (no-Fred) would be huge for us.

There is also a reason why Ten Hag is looking for new midfielders when he has McTominay. Some people think a manager can make a shit player into prime Gullit.
Mount is replacing DVB and Amrabat is replacing Fred - I haven’t heard anything about Mctominay being replaced. In fact everything I’ve read has explicitly stated he’s part of the plans this season and outside of a very high offer is going nowhere. Have you seen different?

Mount is replacing Fred. High energy midfielder who can run the channel and provide goal threat.
We don't replace DvB, he hardly played. I suspect Mainoo will take his place as the sixth midfielder
McT will be replaced by Amrabat

He looked really good in the World Cup. What’s he like week to week in Serie A? If anyone happens to watch Fiorentina

Fred stuff has gone a little quiet which I guess is down to Galatasaray not offering enough

Its quite interesting how Ten Hag has changed our transfer model too, in previous years, I am sure we would have spent money to convince Rice to come to United, instead now we are looking at functional midfielders.

Yeah the strategy is improving

Feels like a limited player.

If we signed him his role here would effectively be as rotation player, stepping in when one of our nominal first choice midfield (Casemiro, Mount, Bruno) are rotated, used in different positions or if a particular game demands something different tactically.

You can't realisitically expect a player signed for that role to be without some limitations. Because if they were that outstanding, they'd be nailed on starters at a top side.

What makes Amrabat a particularly interesting prospective signing to my mind is that while he may not be good enough overall to be a nailed on starter for us, his strengths (namely security and progression in possession) are things we have badly lacked from even our starting midfield in recent years.

It's a very positive thing to see the overall make-up of our midfield options become that much more technically accomplished.

Yeah completely agree

Still no tactical video of him in this thread, I'm disappointed :wenger:

Mctominay and Fred in particular are both just so bad on the ball.

If this lad is a good passer and helps us keep possession then it's a good signing and he's an improvement.

Starting to warm to this signing now. Not a big name, but his qualities sound like a combination of Carrick and Neves.

Yup.

A few good pre-season games and everyone's ready to see this kid run out against the best in the league and Europe. It's madness but then again this is the CAF.

The caf is still by far the best United forum. RedIssue is a proper nuthouse.

I've only seen him during the world cup, which he was outstanding. But International competitions are never a good judge for making signings. Karel Poborsky comes to mind.

His energy was immense, he completely bossed the DM area. IMO for £20m he would be a great signing. I'm already imagining him and Casemiro in away games closing out the game.

Mainoo is just a little too young, this season he will get minutes and push on with his experience levels. Pre-season is completely different to playing against a fit Brighton away from home after a CL game away to Inter Milan. We need experienced players.

Think the fact he won the midfield battle against Rice was an impressive showing outside of his performances in World Cup

I've been wondering why I don't see a thread for this guy after seeing links with him. Seems like I've blocked the OP.

Is he coming as backup for Casemiro? They don't seem similar at all. Has anyone watched him for an extended period of time? What's he like?

Won’t this guy go missing every 6 months for the African Nations Cup just like Onana? Do not want.

I’m pretty sure he is coming to compete for a place in the midfield. Possibly he will find it hard to get in very often but to say he’s back up wouldn’t be right, I don’t think.

Havnt seen him play for Fiorentina but if we are getting the same Amrabat performances we saw with Morocco at the World Cup, then the £25-30m being reported is an absolute steal.

It might even be a better signing than the £37m LFC paid for McAllister.

Agreed and it’s not even £25-30m. Reports suggest it’s more like £20m + add ons.

Well you would have thought so considering the fact Silva specifically got off the coach to speak after last home game
It seems they were put off by our initial asking price. I've always felt they will be back in for him later in the window. Same with West Ham and McTominay.

Last season we had ; Casemiro, Bruno, Ericsen, Fred, McTominay, DVB, M Sabitzer and K Mainoo from Xmas that’s 8 options for 3/4 places, reality we always had 2 from those 8 options, whether Mctominay and Ericsen or DVB and Sabitzer injured.

At one point we had Ericsen, Mctominay and DVB injured plus Casemeiro banned from two red cards. We need at least 7 options, they will get plenty of game time.

Last season Fred played 49 games, Bruno 57, Casemeiro 45, Mctominay 38, Ericsen 38 games, DVB 7, K Mainoo 2, Sabitzer 15
We hardly ever had more than 1 midfielder on the bench from 9 in the PL and 2 from 12 on Europa league.

Allowing 5 subs in CL and PL means you use 14/15 players most games now. We might well sell Mctominay since he’s available if we get £30-35m, his wages are £60k per week, he’ll be looking for a move. I wouldn’t be surprised if we sell Fred, Donny and Scott, we actually replace with Mount, Amrabat and one other like M Kudas.
Mainoo wasn't really considered a serious option last season, so bit of a stretch to make it up to 8.

We started the season with 6 first team midfielders which is completely standard, 2 players per position. We got unlucky with VDB and Eriksen both getting long term injuries simultaneously and brought in an emergency loan in Sabitzer, which increased our options on paper to 7 rather than 6. The plan again should be to have 6 first team midfielders, and re-assess the situation in January if we somehow get really unlucky with injuries again.

I don't think we'll have the funds to bring in Mount + Ambarat + another midfielder, on top of the other business we're doing in other positions. The only question should be if Mainoo should be considered one of our 6 first team midfielders, or we keep one of Fred/Mctom/VDB. If we do bring in another midfielder on top of Mount/Amrabat, it would have to be a very cheap or loan deal you imagine.

Question for people who have watched him more than I have: Is he as immobile as Case? In order to dominate games, I think we need a mobile DM to clean up after Bruno and Mount.
