So what's next for Sir Gareth Southgate?

Seems a really good man and has done a lot to turn back a tide of negativity against his side.

But have his teams played one full game of interesting football, ever? He's had some good results, especially against average sides, and also the one against Germany, but it feels that there should be so much more within the squad.

His in-game management is infuriating. Clearly he has his own opinions around this, and also around some of his picks, and he has some conviction to stand by them, but perhaps they cost us.

I honestly don't know who is available that stands out as a great option, that's the problem. Unless there is conclusive quality available, not has beens or guys that really want a club but turn up for the England paypacket then it may be a case of out of the frying pan. You've got a guy the squad like and has done reasonably in the last major tournament, it can actually get significantly worse.

Sum up Southgate in one sentence.

Me pick players me like and me dont like to concede goals.

England really should've won last night, that goal Poland scored was poor.

Poland changed half the team and I don’t think England made any changes despite having capable players on the bench.

Southgate is a lucky manager, not a good one.

In his tournament runs which teams has he beat that England wouldn’t have been favourites to beat for years? Aside from a Germany team that scraped through their group with a late draw against Hungary, I can’t think of any others. His results have to be put in context.

As an irishman I also agree that you should sack the only manager who has got England to a final since 1966.

He's a manager handcuffed by a lack of midfield options and has catered his team to compensate for that. Made a decent fist of it too.

Sven had better players, Capello had better players and both underachieved big time . So far Southgate has made England hard to beat , got a good unity in the squad where the players from all clubs seem to have gelled and play for each other . The England team he inherited was in total disarray and ended up in the shitshow that was Iceland. No doubt his teams will always play safe but he has earned the chance to have a go at the next world cup. I dread to think who the FA would replace him with as their last few choices have been terrible.

When was the last time an England manager or other International manager had a bigger selection of midfielders to choose from?!?

Mental take mate.

There are 20-30 better managers. Let him control the media and let a tactician run the team.

Average manager who instilled some confidence and respect into the England team after dismal management by Hodgson and Allardyce.

England has had such a low standard of manager that he is arguably the second best it's ever had.

However just because he's got further in a tournament doesn't mean he's doing a job worthy of the team he has. He'll beat the small teams but when there's a tough opponent he'll falter 9 times out of 10.

England hasn't had good managers since the 80s.
And this is the moment when having so much money in EPL starts to notice, as english clubs can just hire top/great managers from abroad like Mourinho,Guardiola,Ancelotti,Tuchel,Klopp,Mancini, etc and don't need to care about developing the standards of english management.

I'm referring to the base of the midfield. Rice and Philips are pretty much locked down in those positions for the foreseeable future and they largely dictate the teams style of play.

But do you trust the Fa to appoint a better manager when the last 4 have been Sam, Roy, Fabio and Schteve. Hell, would a top manager even want the job, club football is more appealing where they can buy and build teams.

Pep would love to takeover I feel. Only France have a better squad than England but their manager will hold them back as usual. Pep can go off to retirement after international dominance for a bit.

We could get Pep.

But no, I don’t trust the FA.

Bellingham is going to be a top player. He’ll take one of those two spots if we get a better manager in.

Pep is obviously a better coach than Southgate but he wouldn`t have the time with the players to implement his style and he would also be limited with the players that he has to work with unlike club football . It is an interesting thought though , Pep no doubt would want to play faster more attack minded football but would that leave the team more open compared to the safe, cagey way Southgate sets up.

Having a better manager in international football doesn't mean shit, it's chemistry between players, quality, and momentum what matters.
Deschamps,Low, and Fernando Santos have won trophies at international level.

The only 2 top managers who won trophies at international level in the 21th century are Marcelo Lippi(2006) and Vicente Del Bosque(2010-2012).

England wants to win, if they hire Guardiola but he gets eliminated in Euro/WC by an inferior team after playing good but wasting chances, people will bash Guardiola anyway for losing.

You cant see what Enrique has done with Spain and what Mancini has done with Italy and say this.

Neither is better than the other. They're both terrible managers in positions they shouldn't be in.

Ffs, we’ve gone from title contenders to sack Ole within the space of 3 days

He is two levels above Solskjaer.

Southgate is not great but he has never made so many stupid mistakes.
He’s actually very comparable, really. He’s a good man manager who has a really good side at his disposal but you never really fancy him to have the tactical nous to actually do it when his side are in a semi final or a final.

? I'm not a huge fan of Ole the manager, but I think he's the better manager of the two. Southgate navigates the press with the same politeness which is probably his biggest quality as a manager. What he did in that final was the most stupid thing I can remember from a manager (more stupid than leaving Fred on against PSG) when he throws two young players onto the pitch whom he has shown no faith in all tournament seconds before a penalty shootout where they are supposed to bail him out, while he spent the whole match trying to hold onto a lead, whilst playing at home. And now he's gone one further and said Sancho is lucky to be in the squad, a player he was responsible for savaging this summer. As a man manager Ole is lightyears ahead of Southgate.

They're probably on par tactically, though I can only assume Southgate has better coaches at his disposal.

Now this is a piss poor post.

A terrible manager wouldn't take a team to a euro final mate. Live with it

No thanks to Sterling saving him. And then was completely outclassed in the final by Mancini who is a manager that knows about tactics and how to set up a team.

Meanwhile he just stood there clueless......yeah great manager. He's shite. Live with it.

Seems more interested in not losing first, as opposed to setting his team up to go out for the win. Should have England playing much better than they are, with the talent at his disposal imo.

Your knowledge of the game is astounding. You must have watched a lot of games!

He was the right man at the start when we were a) genuine underdogs (in 2018) and b) to transition the younger players in the squad but it's so painfully obvious he isn't the man to take the next step and make a real top team out of them.

Just like Belgium pissing about with Wilmots for too long the FA will waste this generation.

I don't know, he's made the exact same mistake twice now. WC semi final and Euro final. That's pretty pretty comparable to Solksjaer's deer in the headlights big game routine.

Southgate has done an excellent job as England manager so far. The feeling around the squad now, compared to back in 2010 is like night and day, we’ve won a penalty shoot out in a World Cup, beaten Germany at the Euros and reached the final.

With regards to a new contract, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gareth wishes to step down, he may wish to take a break from the job. That’s fine with me, I think he might have taken the team as far as he can, the approach to the final and penalties leaves a bitter taste. Problem is I don’t know who is the best choice to succeed him, I think the obvious name is Howe but he has been out of the game for a bit now.

If he's prepared to manage a different nation to his own we should be doing everything to convince Rangnick.

Yeah good shout. Credit where it’s due but it’s time to move on now. Playing conservative football with wingbacks, when you have Rashford (arguably not fit), Sancho, Foden & Grealish (the English Ronaldinho they say!) on the bench, is mind boggling.
