So what's next for Sir Gareth Southgate?

When he first got the job I was pleased that he was picking the young players rather than sticking to the old guard. His tactics at the WC and Euros however put me right off him - utterly negative and average.

We are wasting what should be a golden generation of attacking talent on Southgate. He got massively lucky to have such easy routes open up in the last two tournaments, which covered up some utterly dismal performances. Never going anywhere with him in charge - the real shame is the amount of talent in the England team being wasted though.

Why is every generation for England a Golden Generation?

I've been hearing that since Shearer and Sheringham to Rooney,Gerrard Terry and Rio etc.

Awful manager. Needs sacking straight away and bring Potter in.

Trash manager who will always get jobs because he is English and managed to fluke reaching the finals.

Fallout from this in the media will be so cringe, it’s gonna feel like a national therapy session. ‘Gareth has the cushion! Tell us how you feel let down by the tribe Gareth…’

I'm not defending Southgate, but Smalling isn't the answer to anything. He is completely out of the england picture and rightfully so, no idea why his name is still being mentioned. No progressive manager (which people are calling for to replace Southgate) would pick Smalling.
The point is he dropped Smalling because he could not pass, then picked another CB that isn't better on the ball.

I’m sure you didn’t hear it at any point between the era of the players you mention and the side we have now. There was a looooot of shit back then. 2010 we were playing the likes of Milner, Barry, Downing, Upson, Glen Johnson...we even took heskey to the World Cup! David James was in goal!

He really won't. Assuming he eventually gets shown the door rather than dropping dead in the England dugout with his fingernails embedded deeply into the bench, there'll be almost nobody wanting to sign him up as manager. Maybe the odd team in a shambolic state who keep shipping goals (e.g. Everton this year), but after the first failure he'll be done. Maybe a shit international team will take pity.

Look, Rashford obviously shouldn’t be in the squad. However, Sancho’s general performance level since the Villarreal goal has been more than deserving of a place in this sorry squad. He can dribble, he can finish and most importantly, he has incredible decision making for a 22 year old. Everything you want in international football to beat teams like, wait for it, Hungary, or indeed USA, Iran and Wales.

Hope he doesn’t pick him for the World Cup though. Jadon has had a couple of injuries in the past season, a prolonged mid season break will do him very good in a season where he’s widely expected to explode.

Southgate is not good enough as a manager and never will be.
We nearly won the euros despite him not because of him.
Hopefully he’ll be sacked before the world
Cup but I won’t hold my breath

Although I agree with him, it is crazy how protected he is.

Sack him and get Sean Dyche in...

Getting rid of Southgate would be absolutely ridiculous. The players are fecking knackered and it's a friendly. The whole thing is bollocks.

Another generation of great attacking players gonna be wasted by an ultra cautious coach.
This isn’t a great generation. Some absolute dross in there. Saka, Mount, Grealish all garbage at the moment. Our brightest talent is awaiting bail and our other two future stars can’t find any form for Utd. Kane and Sterling are still the only ones that deliver anything. It’s an overrated bunch yet again.

Sean Dyche would be a vastly better choice. He actually knows how to set up a defence for one thing rather than just picking 8 defensive players and hoping they sort it out amongst themselves.

I wanted to see Eddie Howe get the chance but with him spoken for Potter would be a great choice. Southgate I think is too ‘in there’ with the FA to go back into club management. I can see a round of 16 WC exit followed by him moving into some youth development role or something.

And after all those generations and managers it's Southgate put England in premium tournament semifinal and final. England fans are thankless. .

He absolutely is dreadful, as bad as Wan Bissaka. He has to turn his whole body to make a simple pass because his technique is so bad. Serie A is the league Ashley Young went to and won a league title, it's not very good.

Have you actually seen him this season or are you going on about when he was here. He’s played really well and certainly deserves to be in the squad ahead of players like Coady.

First is first, second is nowhere.

Not sure why Potter keeps popping up. I don't see a parallel universe where an ambitious, young club manager that likes to instill a style over a team takes over an international side with limited prep time before a World Cup.

There's a very high chance England will crash and burn and then he's on the scrap heap regardless of context. In football people have short memories.

Gary Neville is a clown protecting yet another one of his useless mates.

I saw the final score of the game and thought England played their 2nd team (not that's a sufficient excuse) but then looked and saw it was pretty much England's best 11, with youngster Harry Kane up top.

What am embarrassment Southgate is and now the eye test has finally met the results. I hope England get hammered at the WC, so this team has a genuine chance at getting a manager of their level at least for one tournament

The weaknesses in his game haven't changed since moving over to Serie A, he is still the same player. It's just an easier league to play in that's all.

Southgate football isn't great, but feck me it's miles better than Sean Dyche Brexit football.

Huh, he really gets people riled.

He’s a limited manager and it looks as though he’s running out of road, but I can’t imagine getting worked up about him.

So do you think that Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings deserve to be in that squad ahead of him?

The issue with Southgate (and Ole) is that he scapegoated Smalling's lack of progressive passing, all for self serving purpose. Southgate has no intention/ability to coach a progressive style. He's selling next oil by selecting ball playing defenders, to play a dinosaur style and being bad at it too.

Being knighted, doesn't mean he can escape with his hypocrisy.

4 goals and 3 assists in 23 appearances since he scored against Villarreal.

I don't know why people are using the past few England results to rewrite Rashford and Sancho's seasons, but they absolutely do not deserve to be in this team ahead of the other England attackers if we're looking at the past season.

First is first, second is nowhere.
Whatever you say luck is on his side. I knew most England fans looked away when talk about semis finals in previous tournaments. Previously they were embarrassment. But under him England went that far.

And this generation no where near any previous generation from attack to defense either.

He is in the job on merit for what he did in two previous tournaments. He deserved to lead England for that alone.

Smalling is pretty average lads. He's not going to make a big difference to a World Cup. Not picking him is a non-story. Who cares whether Coady, Smalling or Mings is picked, we're bang in trouble if any start.

It's Southgate's reactive in game management, strange tactics, weird ideas in certain positions and seeming inability to continue to motivate after being in tenure for a number of tournaments that is meaningful.

Rashford has been beyond bad for United and doesn't deserve to start for club nor country. There's a lot of things Southgate can be criticised for but dropping Rashford isn't one of them

Yep you're right no blame for taking a player who needed surgery, barely play him apart from throwing him on to take a decisive penalty and then discard him when his form leaves him

That's all perfectly acceptable

You have an agenda against Smalling. It's showing.

Smalling has awkward technique and limited passing range, but he's a safe passer. I have no issue with awkward technique or posture. The issue with Wan Bissaka is that he gives hospital pass, and cheaply gives up possession under little pressure too, which is not something related to Smalling.

Belittling the whole league is stupid. What did Salah win during his time in Serie A? How highly Bruno rated in Serie A?

How did "arry play? Good, shite, or meh? I wasn't able to watch the shambolic display as it was only on pay per view (and i know better than to pay for that lol)

I'm confused. Why is Howe spoken for but Potter isn't?

That “too many attacking players” line suggests the stick about his negativity may be touching a nerve a bit, generally end up agreeing with him when he speaks after games but that was bollocks from him

Feck Southgate his handling of Rashford and Sancho at the Euro's to how he's now basically said they're out of the squad for the WC has been nothing short of appalling
Personally, I don’t think they deserved a place, Rashford especially but I do think he could have worded it slightly differently… though maybe they needed a kick.

That said, I’m happy if neither go to the World Cup (and Shaw)… nice break. Club > country (not that I’m English mind).

True and it was only a couple of weeks ago Danny Murphy said we should have appointed him instead of Ten Hag,hope he picks Liverpools next manager
