After watching the video of LvGs presser, I'm not convinced the "surprise" is actually a signing at all.

LvG's command of English isn't great. So if he says it's not a striker and it's "something" else, probably just means a player who's not a striker. I don't think it's any other kind of surprise, and I doubt he'll try to be overly clever. And maybe it won't be as surprising as we think, because I doubt he follows the transfer news the way we do. So maybe it's someone already mentioned by the media, but probably not the big running stories like Ramos, Cavani etc.
One thing's for sure though ... he's got everyone eating out of his hands. He's the perfect troll, and combined with wheeler-dealer Woody, we've got a muppets' dream summer. And we've not even reached August yet!

That seems to be the system that LvG wants to bed in. If we start our next game with the same lineup, I'll begin to think he wants to play 4-4-1-1 in the season proper. Van Gaal used last preseason to get the side used to 3-5-2, so it's not impossible he could be following the same process this time around.
Looking at the front 6, Depay's position is the one that seems least assured. I think we could be after a #10 in a similar mould: pacy, strong, incisive passer, good finisher. Could be Bale, Reus or Griezmann. I reckon it's Bale.

None of those you mentioned are #10's. If it's a #10, it could very well be De Bruyne, doesn't get much better than that.
I find it odd that Memphis is playing #10 at the moment. Maybe he's trying to adjust him and Rooney to each other, but why don't they switch positions?
As for the #10, I don't want one. We have Mata, Rooney, ADM, Fellaini, Herrera, Januzaj, Pereira and probably someone else I forgot to mention who can play there. Buying another 10 would destroy Januzaj and Pereira's chances of developing themselves in this club.
