So...what could Van Troll's Surprise be!? | LVG: "not a striker - it's something else"

Should be one of the lesser linked players. I can't imagine really signing someone entirely unknown or supposedly unattainable as backup to Rooney. LVG isn't going to keep track of every transfer rumour the media throw out about us, he probably means surprise out of the regular rumours such as Cavani.

Am I right in saying he didn't say we were going to SIGN a striker. He said a surprise striker is in the process. That could mean Wilson. He's in the process of breaking into the first team, and it would surprise the hell out of everyone if he was brought in as first choice striker.

If that was it, I would be worried. Since that first season he has not shown much to be a first choice striker. I even watched the England U-20's during the summer and apart from the fact he couldn't even get in the side, he looked completely off the pace.

It's going to be Messi, I can feel it in my bones. It won't be Messi.

Pedro?

All the media are talking about him as Di Maria's replacement, but actually LVG wants him as a striker? And that's the 'surprise'?

Well, the media has written about Pedro, so it can't be him, right?

Nope. LVG uses the word process as it should be used. He's used that word as a way describing progress. LVG's response was to a specific question on transfer, which he further qualifies by adding it's not the last person described in the papers.

I've no idea why people talk about Pedro and Griezman in the context of secret strikers, other than the surprise factor of a non-striker being signed as one.

They've written about him being Di Maria's replacement, the surprise being that he would actually be the surprise striker? I dont know, jut throwing it out there as a theory.

We all know what LVG is like with finding new positions for players though. Sometimes logic goes out of the window

Pedro yes, but Griezmann spent an entire season up top for Atletico.

Griezmann plays as a Striker for Athletico doesn't he?

I'm guessing it'll turn out the media have written about this striker, he's just not seen it. I doubt he spends as much time in the twitter thread as most of us.

Your entire premise is that Pedro would be a surprise as a striker. You can basically say the same about anyone in the world who isn't a striker. Then you have strikers who would be great surprises, meh surprises and nasty surprises.

Basically, we are in the process of signing anyone.

i don't believe he used that word specifically, nor implied that. His statement seemed to refer to all reports of strikers linked to United. We've probably been linked to every striker out there, so we may be talking about someone already at the club.

Second striker in a free role. He provides a lot of width and I am not sure if he'd be a good option at all for a LVG type of striker role, where you need to stay up front for the system.

Kluivert to me is very much the ideal type of player for LVG, big and strong but yet mobile, great in the air, good hold up and passing and a good(but not great) goalscorer too.

I was hoping Januzaj would get the chance though to get a few games up front, out wide and as an AM if we use one. But now his chances are looking pretty poor.

I'd call that behind the striker myself, but I suppose you can call it support striker. Has never struck me as one, more of an AM cum FW type. We should have signed him back when he was at Sociedad, he was clearly quality. That ship has sailed now I reckon.

Watching the press conference it seems he's ruling out Muller rather than saying it's a striker we've never been linked to before which was the initial impression I got from the quotes online. Still think it's Bale we'll go for.

I've been shouting from rooftops that Benzema is going to be the Adidas Marquee Signing.

This thread is hilarious. Co workers wondering what the hell I'm laughing at. You lot going through all and sundry:lol:
LVG probably taking the piss:D
