Smashley Young

Spanish commentators thought it was a dive - said (roughly translated) "though of course that never happens in England," and laughed.

Blaming the ref for Young diving? I've heard it all now.

Yes I completely just did that, if you read properly you will see I have admitted it was a dive of sorts but the ref doesn't have to buy it FFS. Everytime they buy it, they give them the thumbs to keep diving.

Any rival club and we'd be crying foul. Dive, went looking for contact, went down easy, got clipped when in full motion, whatever excuse you're willing to serve, it wasn't a penalty.

Embarrassing. Should be told to cut it out.

I'd rather he hadn't done this, because I think we were already looking like we were too much for Villa - now we have to put up with the outrage for a few days.
Players gain nothing from staying on their feet, I can totally understand why they instinctively highlight occasions when they're impeded.

We've been on top all game, the penalty doesn't change much. Still, why do it?

Agbonglahor looks 2 stone over weight.

I read it properly. You said the refs are to blame. Utterly ridiculous.

Well I apologise if it reads as such but you've misinterpreted my point. Refs allow themselves to be conned and thus advocate players to dive, if refs didn't get conned so easily I doubt as many players would be as theatrical. Nothing ridiculous to suggest at all, players shouldn't even contemplate such things in the first place but once one guy does it and succeeds others naturally follow.

The problem is that players are actively trying to con referees. Refs are only human.

He stood directly onto his foot though

Young's foot landed on the guys foot. And then Young flailed like a shot fugitive and fell down like his feet had suddenly been amputated. It was obvious that he was looking for a penalty and was hardly impeded by the defender. Hence dive.

See the edit I added on. Obviously it's not ideal but unfortunately diving is part of the game and we have to get on with things, we just have to ensure it doesn't get to ridiculous level i.e. blatantly no contact. Young was wrong today as I have said but it's not the worse thing you'll see this season. If he doesn't cut it out I'll be annoyed but it takes time and I have a feeling his reputation will precede him now and he'll find it more difficult to con ref's from now on.

I thought it was a pen myself, not to say Young didn't make the most of it though

Its not a penalty if the defender isn't impeding you from doing what you were. Young had shifted the ball and could've continued towards the ball uninterrupted. Instead, decided that he is going to wait for some contact and go down.

The day you start saying things like agreed he went down easy, clipped at high speed, using 10 camera angles to prove contact, good probability your player dived.

If an Arsenal player did that, we'd be laughing at the 'dive'

I just saw several Villa players screaming for a corner that was clearly a goal kick. I think they should all be booked for trying to con the ref. Disgusting behavior.

He's turned diving into an art form. It's quite amazing how effective he is at getting decisions.

But he really needs to cut down on the theatrics. If it's a foul, accept it but there's no need to add an extra layer of simulation. We don't condone unnecessary diving and we never will.

foot was clipped...just enough.

Young stood on Clark's foot. If the back foot did somehow touch him it's irrelevant since he was already diving by then so it touched Clark on his follow-through.

Just lol.

Ryan Taylor tweeting Young is the biggest cheat in the premier league. Well...

If he starfishes a penalty at wastelands we won't be upset.

Don't think it was as bad as some of you make it out to be.
Yes he made the most out of it, but I think contact was there and to give a pen is justifiable.

Overall his performance wasnt bad.

Right, he dived, I think we can mostly agree on that, can we move on now?

He actually had a very good game today, linked up well with Evra and put in a good shift on the flank, defending and attacking well.

These diving nonsense have to stop right now... we are Manchester United... we win it the right way. I'm ashamed but happy nevertheless.

Posted this in the post-match thread too but though I'd stick it in here as well..

feck it. If you don't make the referee see that contact was made then you're going to get fecked over at the other end, so feck that shit.

If Welbeck had fallen over when his shirt was tugged against Wigan we might've got a penalty, but he stayed up and didn't make the ref aware that he was impeded by the contact and got feck all for it. Instead we get shafted down the other end and drop points.

Yes, it was theatrical and looked pathetic, but there was genuine contact on his right foot enough to make him fall over and as such was a penalty. I don't see why the ref can't punish the contact with a penalty and punish simulation with a yellow card for the same incident?

Fergie saying Young played for the penalty, it was a dramatic fall but it was a penalty.
