Smashley Young

He hasn't played a particularly good game since the Arsenal-game, actually. He was ineffective against Bolton, and decent against Chelsea, but he's struggled in virtually every game he's played since.

Injuries and chopping and changing to the team needs to take it's fair share of blame, but it makes you wonder if it isn't something to the 1-in-5 games theory that Pete trots out from time to time. (Not saying I agree, I think Young is a good player, but perhaps not as good as I'd hoped for)

I agree with this. I had high hopes for him, but I'm not sure I can still see him providing performances at the highest level consistently. He's nevertheless a good back-up for Nani and Tony V though, but those wages (if what's being mentioned here is correct) and that fee for a player in the last year of his contract suggests that I'm not the only one who'd expected more.

Still a lot of time for him to shine though.

Edit: Before anyone jumps in, this isn't based on his performance against Chelsea, but everything I've seen of him in our shirt so far.

I moan now because the game against Chelsea meant Young was being discussed again.

I've mentioned this before. It doesn't change my opinion on his season at all. I still think he is a bit of a luxury for us, and hasn't justified his signing so far.

Plenty of ability there to show his worth, though. I'm just not sure he'll get the chance when Nani returns.
He'll get his chances, I'm sure of that. You don't use the same two wingers all the time, you rotate, someone hits top form, someone does not. Look at last season, our best player from August to March didn't start any of our important games in final months of the season and started the Champions League final on the bench.

I think Young was exactly what we needed when Valencia was injured or later when he was our first choice right-back.

And Nani's and Valencia's current form make you think Young has been average for us so far.

No, it's the fact he's not played a good match since his first 4 or so.

Don't tell me why I think things, I'm perfectly capable of forming my own opinion as it is. And I do appreciate what Young brings to the table as I've said before. He's got a lot of good qualities, he just isn't the outstanding creative force which might be needed in a system relying so heavily on wingers to attack.

Hence why he was at his best when Cleverley, Anderson and Rooney fired on all cylinders in central areas earlier on, and he could link with them.

The guy has the football brain of Theo Walcott. He is so predictable. Case in point the penalty shout against Chelsea. He gets a nice deflection his way, he's got room to look up, place his shot or try to find the killer pass. Instead, he goes into auto pilot mode, head down, try his customary dribbling move and try to run. Bad close control followed by a ridiculous exaggerated dive. Fckn Ashley Young

Whoa there..

The football brain of Theo Walcott? If there's one thing I'd not criticize Young for, it's the lack of a football brain. He's a very clever passer, and a thinking winger.

Sometimes I'd wish he was more direct, obviously, as that would give him more variety, but it's not typical of Young to badly control the ball, it's ringrustiness.

I stopped after that bolded sentence.

Looks a little more lively today, lost his footing a bit but hopefully can have a good second half and kick on.

Very good in the second half, seriously needs to cut out on his diving though.

Good finish for the goal but he really is a serial diver. Jury still out for me on whether he was a good signing.

 he was our most skillful midfielder tonight. He did not dive he was targeted by Ajax because of his skills and they knew he was the one to make something happen. He is a bit lightweight, lighter than Nani, not surprised he goes down easily.

Yup the diving is annoying. Hopefully tonight's goal will give him a much needed confidence boost.

I still don't get why he went down when he was through from that pass from Wayne. But a good goal from him. I thought he missed his chance when he did not strike it first time but then he did good and finished.

I think he's just very lightweight, gets less free kicks than he deserves really.

Wouldn't say he was brilliant in the second half by any means, but he was better than the norm we've been used to pre-injuries.

I found this performance really encouraging... Second half in particular. He carried the ball at speed, he made room for himself to get a few attempted crosses in, and he had a tackle that made me think of Giggs, the way he was rushing to make up for his mistake by sliding in.

The finish was really clever too, as he knew he was making them all guess to the keeper's left... Sort of reminded me of Zizou's goal against Spain in the 2006 WC quarter finals.

Once he was given his free role and allowed to not stick to the left as much, he really came alive and gave us a great option through the middle.

Some great moments, first half he was a bit wasteful, and he really should start to try and go on the outside a bit more - every player knows he prefers his right foot, so they get caught off guard if he try and mix it up a little.

That said - what a fecking diver. That was apalling really. Worst I've seen since Nani. Cut it out, will you?

Needs to play his best game for us against Spurs if Valencia can't make it.. Good goal today, hopefully now he can stay if the whole run-in..

Valencia is out for a month. So he will be the starting option for us unless Fergie prefers Giggs.

I thought he better against Chelsea tbh, he was crap tonight goal or no goal

Obviously needs more games

The goal will help. I don't think its been so much fitness than confidence that Young's been lacking recently. He's often looked too anxious to impress and try and force his way back into the first XI and that has led to him running up blind alleys and trying to take the high road when the low road would do. A goal to settle his nerves and make him feel like he's back in the zone should bring him on. I'm sure we'll see an Ashley Young closer to what we had in the first few games of the season from now on.

Hope so. We're gonna need him to deliver with Valencia out now. Watching Ashley Young play you can see why the stats show he draws so many fouls. He's quite the expert at going down under any contact and making it look convincing.

In terms of his overall game, we need him to show more unpredictability when he goes forward. Valencia's predictable too, but almost unstoppable in the way he goes about his business. Young's versatility has always been his strength. He needs to get back to mixing things up because the amount of his crosses blocked by the first man is frustrating.

Nah - it was fitness. he was playing when something wasn't quite right and this affects your confidence and therefore your form.

Aye feck it, who cares that he dives, he's a good player, thats the main thing. :wenger:

Every fecker dives these days. From our team alone... Nani, Rooney, Evra and I think Hernandez(?) all have a tumble in them... hell even our homegrown Danny has shown a bit of a knack for it of late... doesn't stop people from worshipping any of them though?

Young is probably the worst diver of the lot (Well him and Rooney are neck and neck for me)... but it would be harsh to single him out for it.

I can't recall a dive that bad from Nani in well over 2 years. He's improved a lot and it's a bit of a myth now.

Young was decent last night, well taken goal and I'm glad he's back given the news on Valencia.

Young marked his first appearance since Christmas with his fourth goal of the season, breaking the deadlock after a dismal first-half display.

"It was Ashley's first game in two months," said Ferguson.
I could swear Young played against Chelsea the other day, it was a very forgettable performance mind you.

I meant to write Ronaldo actually, God knows how I typed out Nani.

I never thought Nani to be bad at diving. Making the worst out of fouls, rolling around in his trademarked inury ball? Sure. But he's not a diver for me.

Young is the worst we've had for a while, and it's bloody annoying. Also, he's so bad at it that I can't help imagining him getting injured due to landing on his knees in one of his stupid, excaggerated falls.

Stop it, will you?

He's turned in a fair few tumescent performances to be fair but he's better than he's showing at the minute. Just needs games.
