Smashley Young

It's very satisfying to have 3 pacey mid 20s wingers in the side. If Valencia is injured or Nani out of form or vice versa Young is there

Been critical of him but he was decent when he came on and that cross was fantastic.

I really thought it's going to be a typical Young cross which evades just about everyone and goes out for a goal kick

Goes to ground very easily and keeps cutting inside never getting to the byeline not a patch on Nani on the left imho but a decent alternative although as we were looking to buy a player to give us more balance on the left wing I found it strange we went for A Young a right footer (Price I suppose).

He did his job solid, but I wasn't impressed at all. He didn't show nothing more than in previous games.

Apart from a great cross for our winner? What more would you like from a winger in twenty minutes?

Have you ever heard of a full stop or comma it doesn't sound like you have i think cause of the way you post who knows though

I didn't find that cross that great, since it wasn't nothing better than any of his crosses from begining of season, he was just lucky since we had at least for or five players in box so eventually it found someone, or someone(Giggsy) found it on back post.
As for his overall game, I would like to see him try to drible a player who is tired and played the whole game.

thought he played well. clearly has a good eye for someone making a run.

Indeed, and he has the ability to get the ball through to them. However, for someone with his pace he's not very good at making those runs himself. He frequently slows down counter attacks by standing around waiting for the ball rather than getting in behind. I guess that stems from years of being surrounded by players without the same quality on the ball as him and it shouldn't be that hard to fix.

Give back your license to comment on football. You don't deserve it.

Wow.

Send him back down lads. He's obviously not ready yet.

I may be talking shit, but young with reason isn't even the third choice winger in our squad.

I am just telling the facts, I didn't leave him on the bench today, Fergie did.

Young being on the bench because he's not in great form doesn't mean he's behind Giggs in the pecking order though. Better to judge him by the time he's back in form, or at the end of the season if that hasn't happened yet...unlikely though, I thought he played quite well today. He's showed promising signs of forming a good partnership with Evra, hopefully that continues to grow.

So out of the wingers we had available he was third choice? Was he first/second choice when he started the other night? Did you leave your brain lying around somewhere?

We played pretty much our strongest available XI today, except jones for rafael, but jones was there probably because of height advantage. The other night we played fabio as a lb, jones as a cb eventough other players were fit to, so that means we didn't play our strongest XI against ajax.
Young is behind Nani and Valencia in pecking order, and often he is behind Giggs and Welbeck too. Not always, but sometimes yes. I am not trying to say he was poor today or something like that, but he wasn't that great either. One good but (probably)overhit cross and nice through ball for evra in 30 minutes doesn't earn you some praise. He was solid, nothing else. I am expecting more from him.

Translation: Young hit the ball, it flew into the box where randomly deflected of Giggs and went in.

Yeah rightooo

Take a break from this football thing.

He was excellent when he came on today. It's taken over half the season, but someone finally made a run to that part of the box where ALL of Ashley Young's crosses go.

Give it another six months and we might even stop gathering all of our players at the far post for our inevitably near post corners. When that happens we'll practically be unstoppable.

He was lucky that some of his team-mates were in the box?

I doubt he would've made a cross in the box if there were none of his team-mates.

I thought this was his best outing for a while. Purpose and a bit more confidence.

His first pass for Evra as soon as he came in was excellent, he tracked back hard and doubled up on Bennett to give Evra extra protection, and he won us the game with that ball into the box.

First of all, he was free, you could expect solid cross even from Bebe in that situation. Second, check this video:
900 games, 90th minute winner: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) v Norwich | Football goal videos, highlights & clips - 101GG
There is no one at back post in moment of crossing the ball. Giggsy was somewhere near the penalty spot, welbeck and scholes were at near post, nani stayed behind. He probably aimed for Welbeck, but it wasn't even close to him, giggs scored it after he chased the ball, it wasn't directed for him at all. It was solid free cross, nothing more. And I really don't wan't to discuss about some cross, was it lucky or was it something exceptional. It gave us 3 points, that's enough.

Christ! We have someone in the La Liga thread claiming Ronaldo was lucky to score a 15 yard back heel and now Ashley Young is lucky to have a very good cross put in the back of the net.

Leo Messi is definitely the luckiest player in the world though.

Amar's getting some unfair stick. Like Noodle pointed out as well, the cross was well over and beyond everyone. Two scenarios: one, a typical Young cross. Two, he meant that specifically for Giggs.

On a related note, I think he should have a clause in his contract that fines him unless he launches at least one of those "curling just inside the far post" efforts within the first five minutes of any appearance. He needs to be more aggressive/assertive. He certainly has the skillset for it.

Can't really blame him, though. It was clear early on he was the type for whom it'd take longer to stop being star-struck re his teammates and realize he's playing with them and not under them.

Have you ever played football? Wingers don't cross to stationary players. That would be stupid. They put it an area for players to attack. That's what happened. Had it not we would've drawn.

Cheers mate. It was assits, fair play to that, but to point that cross as some top quality one is nonsense.

He's got 3 players to aim for centrally about 12 yards out, so he's probably trying to swing it in just infront of them. The cross is slightly overhit, Giggs has done well to retrieve it at the back post. Its not a great cross but who gives a feck when we scored from it.

If you watch football you will often hear co-commentators calling a cross that goes into a dangerous area where no player can even get on the end of it as 'a great cross'. The main school of thought is that it is the wingers job to put the ball into dangerous areas and it is the attackers job to get on the end of it.

Young put in a cross that Norwich were unable to clear and that Ryan Giggs was able to put in the net. It was a good cross, end of.

Beautiful cross for the second goal. He is getting his confidence back and with a run of games now, he will be back to his best.

The cross was perfect. All Giggs had to was get a touch to put it in. Can't ask for more than that. When a player crosses from that position the ball has to go back post.

When you are cutting back and crossing it in, it will go towards the back post and towards the GK. If you can pick away from the keeper, you have done a good job.

He'll aim for the back post if he has a player running on from the back but from that position (pause the vid just before he takes the cross) he'll have been aiming to put it into the danger area just infront of the keeper for one of the 3 attackers in a central position, giving them a header infront of goal. He's definately overhit it slightly, Giggs has done well to get onto the end of it to poke it in. As i was saying, i dont give a feck, we scored!
