Smashley Young

What do you people expect first game back from a long injury lay-off

Rooney was worse, and people are putting him in their top three in the MOM thread

Rooney was worse?!

He wasn't brilliant or anything, don't get me wrong, but Young was useless today.

I felt Evra would have been more attacking if he didn't have Sturridge to worry about. Young definitely needs an overlapping full back in order to give opposition defenders the uncertainty of whether he'll cut inside or go on his left foot. Evra had too many defensive duties to worry about (you can argue how well he covered them) but it's not Young's fault entirely that he was quiet.

Rooney wasn't worse, come on now

I didn't think Rooney was very good. But there weren't that many that were very good today overall and he scored when needed. That's why I have him in my top three. He definitely wasn't the best. Flawless game from Rafael.

What on earth were you watching?

Rooney made bad choices and messed up moves continually, he was really off his game

Young wasnt very incisive but he didn't lose the ball that much

Yes Wayne scored the penalties, but a top striker should be putting the vast majority of his penalties away

What? About the only foot Rooney put wrong was the under-hit pass to Welbeck in the first half.

Shut it, Liability

He always seems to play with his head down. Just really unintelligent play.

Rubbish, he's a very intelligent player. He does slow things down at times and I wish he could beat his man more often, but his decision-making is his best quality.

Should have done better but he was coming off the back of a lay off. that said, once nani gets fit, he'l struggle to get into our 1st 11 specially with the tight run in..

I think most of the comments in the game thread are more to do with how some dislike Young rather than his actual performance. Wasn't great but he was far from useless today

Rooney was driving right at the opposition which is what we need, he really made things tick and linked play from our deep central midfielders to our wings and welbeck/Hernandez. He's going to give the ball away because like Giggs he's always looking to open up the oppostion. Brilliant bit of play too just before the third goal were he took it down with men all around and forced a really good save from Cech.

I won't be too harsh on him as it was his first game back and he was up against a very solid Ivanovic, but he was rather sub-standard today.

Yeah he did do well in that move leading up to the goal

Most of the time he wasn't in the game, and when he was he was largely quite bad

He played the same way he's played ever since he moved to us, bar the first few games. Doesn't really do much but piss around cutting back and forth then plays a poor ball.

Insane.

Back on topic, Young was very lively for first game back, offered plenty of threat. Very happy with his performance today, if we can keep him and Nani fit, we have three very useful wingers for the rest of the season.

Woah Plech, we're talking about the Chelsea match now, catch up!

Y'know, the one where Rooney put in a classic grabbing the game by the neck and driving every attack we had performance?

Newcastle was ages ago!

I didn't think Young did much wrong. In the context of the first half he was hardly the worst player out there for us. Everyone's passing was off in the first half, we were really wasteful, and credit to Young when he did have sight of the goal in the first half he hit a wicked curler instead of dilly dallying with it until we lost the ball like everyone else did. I'm not trying to say he was world class or something but I don't think he was awful. A 6 out of 10. Nothing more, nothing less.

Plech. You are wrong about Rooney.

It wasn't his best game and his passing was a bit off. But he was still our brightest spark in terms of creating space and chances.

His crossing was supposedly his biggest strength and since he's moved here it's been rubbish on a whole, like he just hits it without looking or knowing where it's going to end up. It's always the same cut back onto his right foot inswinger too.

Plech so wrong about Rooney today. He was easily our MOTM. Drove us on. He was outstanding against Chelsea all last season too

Back to Ashley Young, had a poor game today. I know he is rusty but he is clearly inferior to Valencia and Nani.

Good to see him back. He offers something different to our other wingers and I think his understanding with Rooney can be very good when he finds form.

I'll say it again, a winger without an overlapping full back is too easy to defend against. Evra was kept busy by Sturridge, so Young's game suffered as a result.

I think one of the main reason a lot of our crossing seems shite, not just from Young, but form a lot of our players is that because at times we play so patiently, by the time the crosser looks to put it in the box the defence has organised and there's little room. At Villa they would of got it wide a lot quicker, he cut in and put it to the back post, and that was pretty much their game plan.

Good squad player to have during the run-in, though he'd have a hard job ousting an in-form Valencia or a fit Nani from the starting lineup.

He needs to be quicker with the ball at his feet. Prior to his injuries and today's game - just not the player we bought and that we saw the in pre-season and the first few games of the season. He's just slowing down the game, not taking on his men quick enough and hogging the ball when a quicker past would've been the better option, and the initiative subsequently lost.

Rooney was very good today - nothing at all like what he was against Newcastle! Not his best, but he was constantly initiating the good moves. Our attacking play was pretty good until the last ball today...

I call this phenomena "Hernandez on the bench". :p

Lets not beat about the bush here, he was fecking shit, worst player on the pitch by far. Even Torres had more impact on the game than he did. Young was afraid to put in a challenge at any point had little end product and looked scared to try and take on his man.

He's just too predictable. Cuts in to use his right all the time. needs to mix it a bit.

but i think its too early to judge him, he's just back from injury. Took valencia some time to look back to his best so with young he may just need a bit of time.

played with 10 men untill he was subbed off. too early for him to start running at fb's. he'll be fine , he got 50+ mins. maybe would hve been better off the bench.

The thing is, he looked like a world beater against Arsenal, and i still think that games clouded too many people's judgement of him, they expect more of him when in reality i dont think he's ever played a game as good as that in his premiership career.
