Smashley Young

He's just slightly pointless.

The only thing he sort of has going for himself is that he tracks back well. Which is not the thing you'd put first on a list of things you'll want from one of your four front players, who's supposed to create chances for the side.

He will go down and limp off when the going gets tough. Everything is easy at home to teams like Norwich when your team is crusing, that's when Young can show his qualities. Put him on the big stage and things don't go to plan, he wants none of it.

Nothing to do with ability, it's hunger and desire, he goes into challenges not wanting to get hurt rather than wanting to win the ball.
And yet he played very well away to Chelsea and City last season.

I actually thought he was more than decent last night and he's getting unfair flack here. Some even saying Zaha was better than him when that's simply not true. Wilfried disappeared at times last night whilst Young was involved with all of our good play. Yes his crossing was poor and the shooting too, but what you expect if he's not playing on the regular?

Did ok tonight. Over hit too many crosses though and them in-swinging one with his right foot are just crap. But still, i think hes a keeper just for the fact that he is a good squad player.

Steve Round praised his performance.

I'd say that's a pretty harsh criticism to throw at him based on yesterdays game... I specifically remember he was very close to picking out Rooney and Zaha at points last night (amongst others) and his crosses were only slightly over hit.

As above, he was very close to picking out people last night, they were only slightly over-hit.

Story of his United career. He needs to realize that we don't have Crouch on back post. Only time I remember us getting anything out of his back post crosses is that Giggsy's goal against Norwich, but I think that was more down to number of our players in the box and Giggs' poaching than actually him putting good cross.

He was pretty decent yesterday and actually tried to take his man on a few times, even suceeded a couple of times. Much, much better than previous performances this year. Not more than a 7 performance though. Crosses better from the right...

He was alright last night, although his crosses were ineffective.

The most disappointing thing was that given exactly the same space (a shit ton), Buttner was the far better player. His crosses were better, he made himself an option quicker and his general touch/play was less frustrating.

It was a great opportunity to put in a performance that said to the manager that he's ready to be back from obscurity. In reality his performance said that the League Cup is where he's comfortable.

Compare his performance to some of the other player's struggling for a first team place and you can see the disappointment (albeit OTT).

Sorry but I disagree. I actually thinks its the other way round. I feel he definitely shows hunger, desire and passion but just can't match it with ability. Last season his two best performances were probably away to Chelsea and City.
Also, I remember saying it in the past to my brother he always seems to get impact injuries because he's going in for challenges. I understand people criticising his ability but I just don't agree with him lacking desire.

As for his performance last night he was OK. Over hit crosses were his problem though which was his strongest point at Villa. Good when crossing from the right though.

I'm far from Young's biggest fan, but he's a much better player than we've seen in the last year or so. His confidence just looks completely shot.

I agree. I've said that before that's why I think he needs to leave. He'll never get a long run in this side and that's how I think he'll get his confidence and form back. He was a very good player at Villa and his first season here. Since Euro 2012 his confidence and form has been shot. I just don't think he'll get that back here. I think he'll leave in the summer window and I hope he does well at his next club.

It's not just based on last night. Fact remains, despite having plenty of crosses last night none of them ended up in a decent chance as far as I remember. One of the crosses that stood out for me was late in first half when he received a nice pass from Januzaj and Hernandez was quite open in the middle and Young put too much height and pace on the cross. Just one cross I know, but just an example of what I'm talking about.

Being "very close" and "only slightly" over-hitting doesn't really matter. As long as he doesn't hit the player I don't care if it flies out of the ground Bebe-style or just narrowly over the player - at the end of the day, neither will end up as a goal.

Either your memory is shite or you see what you want to see then. He stuck a great cross on Javier's head that should've led to his hat trick.

The 2 goals against the Arsenal reserves set up very unrealistic expectations of what many of us thought Ashley Young would become at United. 2 and a half years almost and he's had about 4 good games. He goes missing far too often, and even when the team does play quite well he's the one having little effect on it.

I've just read interviews with Steve Round and Young himself; both seemed very happy with his performance against Norwich. Wtf is going on.

Steve Round said that about Januzaj and Zaha, I think. It's only Young who believes he had a very good game.

Err no, I didn't just make up the interview.

"It was a terrific result," Round told MUTV. "I’m really pleased. To score four at Old Trafford is always special and it’s great to for some of the younger players to be able to experience a game at this level against a good Norwich team.
"I'm very pleased with the performance and very pleased to go through."
Round is convinced that the goals will flow once the champions' luck changes and there were many positives on the night - not least the performances of Wilfried Zaha and Adnan Januzaj.
"We've not quite had the rub of the green in the past few games," he continued. "Hitting the bar and the post a few times. I think that there will be teams on the end of some big scores from us because we’ve got that capability and we’ve got that firepower right the way through the squad.
"I was really pleased for Wilf Zaha to get a start and play so well tonight, a couple of the other younger lads also did well such as Tom Cleverley and, of course, Adnan, who’s getting stronger by the game.

Are we really having this discussion? Did you actually read the link you posted?

Not sure how you've managed to start an argument over something so based in fact. I just mentioned it was odd Round singled him out for praise, which you refused to believe actually happened. Round thought he was "terrific" and "excellent"; nothing to do with completing 90 minutes.

He was a bit unfortunate with a couple of his crosses because they were just slightly overhit (and then he had 1-2 that were hopeless)

But overall he had a good game - and I actually think he has started the season quite ok - not anywhere near his best but still. On his day - his set-pieces are probably among the best in the club, and if he can re-discover that form - he can be valuable.

Young after the game was feeling quite the big time Charlie:
“I hadn’t played since the Manchester City game (September 22), so I’ve been biding my time and waiting for my opportunity to impress the manager.
“I felt that I did well and enjoyed the Norwich game, but we will see what the manager thought when he picks the team at the weekend.

Seems like he was enthralled with himself.

Fully expect to see him leave in Jan. If he wants any chance of going to the World Cup he has to be playing and he's no chance of that if he stays.

He's going to have to agree to a huge cut then as there's no way he'l find takers on a 100k+ a week salary. Somehow, I dont think he will.

Personally think he should have gone in the summer. We've got plenty of options there now and would much rather see Zaha/januzaj get as many chances as they can. If his wages are truly so high then we're going to have a hard time moving him on though without taking a hit. Definitely one of our more overpriced transfers under Fergie for me. He's a good squad option for a big club and that's it, 18m and apparently £100k+ wages seems very ott.

He won't leave, he would rather get paid than play at a club fitting his status like city leftback - forgot his name.

I'd have moved him on in the Summer too but from what we've read it seemed clear that there weren't going to be any significant departures in the Summer. Understandable really as Moyes will havr wanted to make his own judgement.

I think next Summer will be one of the busiest we've ever seen.

Thankfully this isn't football manager and it is in fact real life. Where the players are real people and every decision has a consequence.

I have to admit he looks hampered still by the ankle injury he suffered. I'd not be surprised if he's even near 80% let alone 100%.

What does that have to do with his post exactly?

feck it, just sell everyone. Finance this, wage that, gamble on the readiness of youngsters. Young is a human being and obviously has an influence on the club in some way that he is useful to the squad. Hence him still being there, this is real life and not a game where consequences mean nothing and players can be thrown away like .txt documents into the recycling bin.

Spelling it out on detail there is absolutely no chance that Moyes would have offloaded 'main' squad players (loosely) to roll the dice on the possibility of Januzaj being ready to take his chance. I think that point is well made by the lack of time that Zaha has received so far.

We are a business. Young's wages are far too high for what he is actually delivering on the pitch. He will hopefully be offloaded in the summer. Consequences = No more Ashley Young, squad spot opens up, wage bill cleared. Happy days.
