Smashley Young

You've got to feel for Young though. It's not his fault that United signed him, or that he continues to be played ahead of Kagawa and Nani. He gives it his all on the pitch, is supposed to be in his prime years although that is quite clearly not good enough for United's first team. It's more the manager's fault for continuing to pick him and Valencia, and not getting rid of either of them in the summer. And the poor soul joined twitter too, not the wisest decision he ever made I think.

Does he feck, he pussies out of tackles, aerial battles, basically anything that involves a bit of aggression. He's the worst diver in the league.

He's a pussy.

I don't like Young, he's a bit average and a cheat, but he is not responsible for the fact that we've signed him and start him in important games.

Young is never even close to brilliant, also see the above diagram. Nani doesn't do that.

Nani doesn't have to be 'always brilliant' anyway. You can't honestly say that Kagawa & Nani wouldn't be a huge step up from Young, can you?

They're miles better than Young. It's just that you made out that Nani is always brilliant. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all that.

Agree with most of that except the part Cina rightly highlighted. He doesnt really give his all but yeah, its not his fault managers play him over better players, he's hardly going to say "No, play Nani instead".

That is probably the main issue I have with him too. If you're a poor player, or playing poorly, that's fine (obviously I would prefer to have good players) but I can accept that. What I won't take is players limping off with injuries who you can tell just don't want it. Players not challenging for a 50/50 ball. The least a player can do when playing poorly is put their body on the line for his teammates. You have to win the battle before you win the match, something that Young really struggles with.

It's not something you can teach, it's something that a person either has or doesn't have. And Young would prefer not to get hurt over doing everything to win the ball in a 50/50 for his team.

Now, now - don't be so ill-tempered, Cina

He probably is amongst the worst divers; shameful.

The most atrocious thing about him is that he's probably just as bad as Downing these days, or arguably worse counting last season and this. He doesn't assist and he doesn't score - when did he last score a goal for United? He can't take on a man, as you said he doesn't tackle much, and his link-up play is mediocre.

He's frightened of getting injured. The way he is playing means he will steer clear so we are stuck with him.

He did make that pass that led to the 4th goal against Leverkussen last week.

Ironically, I think a club like Everton would snap our hands off for a player like him. As I mentioned before though, you get the impression Moyes has a lot of faith in him, which is depressing.

Or we could be left with a Florent Malouda. Will have cost us around £45 million at the end of his contact....

If he doesnt leave and there is no indication either the club wants him to go or he wants to leave. Then he would have cost us.

£16m + 5 x £5-£6m per year so anywhere between £41-£46m

Berbatov cost us £30m + £20m but we made £5m back so over 4 years £45m.

Young will go down as SAF greatest folly.

This is the worrying part - what do managers see in Young that everyone else fails to see. If we fail to see it then his performances and results should support the faith placed by managers in him but they don't.

Berbatov was far better than Young and contributed a lot more in his time here.

Your quantitative assessment only works if we let Young go on a free. Otherwise we recoup some of that.

From a qualitative assessment I agree, at least to the extent that I prefer Berbs to Young.

Are you guys comparing Berbatov and Young? Berbs was top scorer one season and generally contributed quite a lot - if anything, he should have been given more chances, whereas Young, well he has been given too many.

He signed a 5 year deal in 2011.

£16m according to

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/ashley-young/transfers/spieler_14086_589070.html

I still think we can sell him for between £8-£10m - we should cut our losses.
He's reportedly on over 100k a week, who would pay £10m plus his wages for him? We're stuck with him until the last year of his contract when we can let him go for about £5m and pay half his wages for a year.

We might be able to send him on loan somewhere, at least he's away from sight that way.

It's odd that SAF who is possibly the best manager ever showed a lot of faith in Young, and now we seem to have Moyes doing the same. He must be doing something right in training..

What I meant was that I was wondering whether the vid was a pisstake. Easy to find great stuff that Nani does, whereas they could hardly find anything decent that Young has done.

The Young hate is a bit OTT and that's speaking from someone who doesn't really rate him! His 2nd half performance against Palace was enough to show that he still has ability and the potential to be a very good winger. The issue is that he has zero consistency and his famous crossing ability has been well... mediocre is a kind word.

It's the managers fault at the end of the day for continually picking him. It reminds me of when Ferguson continued to play Valencia last season even when he was in shocking form. Hopefully Dave gets struck on the head and has an epiphany to use Nani instead.

Didn't someone say he was one of the 1st to meet Moyes?

He's an arse licker. Yes gaffer, no gaffer, 3 bags full gaffer, pick me gaffer.

That even had a lot more merit to it though, as Valencia was our player of the year the season before that.

Not comparing them as players but the possible cost to United. Berbatov was far more effective than Young will ever be.

Young had a very good debut season for us. Not at all crazy that Fergie gave him chances last season.
