Smashley Young

Usually with these kind of threads, there is at least someone trying to defend the player. At a very minimum we usually have someone saying 'Whilst he wears the shirt you should support him'.

For the first time, there is none of this. How he continues to get near the training ground, let alone a shirt, baffles me.

I'll take a stab at defending him...

He could be decent as an option to come off the bench against tired legs, as he is quite quick and half decent on the counter attack... and can come on for Nani if he's having "one of those games".

That's all I have.

He was rubbish yesterday but he's generally been good this season, in my opinion.

When the defense of playing him is something like 'he works defensively', when you use loose 4-1, you have to think, what would have happened if we hadn't played someone so defensive minded? My guess is he might start fecking attacking.... Waste of space.

...or we could just bring on a youngster in that case. For the suppsoed wages he's on, if being a "squad player" is the best he can offer, then no thanks.

I'd have no issue with that. He could be a useful squad player. It's all these starts he gets I find so bizarre.

Young plays better for England as he has more confidence.. At United he plays the simple safe pass, always with his back to. Goal. I think he still believes United is a step too far for him so rather than play expansive he is playing safe but that's not helping United or himself.

Not so much a limited player but a player limiting himself.

There is no doubting that he is a very poor player by United standards. He can obviously play but not what we need. He can be a useful squad player, I agree with those that believe that, however you can get that from the reserve team, you don't have to spend millions and give that player massive wages.

I think that's the main thing fans have against Young.

And he's right.

The main thing I have against Young is that I really don't like him. I don't recall ever not liking a Utd player, purely because they are a Utd player, but he's a diving little pussy who seems to have absolutely no balls, he's on big wages, cost too much, is a bit shit and is somehow keeping far better players out of the team.

As Brwned said, he's our only player I would actively welcome getting the feck rid of.

We're stuck with him now, so might as well make the most out of it.

He's a bit like a big scar on your arm (but less attractive) you can try cover it up but it has to come out every now and then... so you might as well make the most out of it by wearing a nice t-shirt, or use a tatoo and turn it into something that looks alright.

Scars.

I would agree with that. But again, £17 million for a squad player. And £27 million for another squad player. When can we stop bringing in squad players and bring in some genuine quality?

The scar analogy

The way his performing atm, a loan to the Championship and recalling Lingard wouldn't be too bad either ;)

You think Fellaini is a squad player?

When Moyes wanted us to salvage something yesterday he used him as our #10, believe me, in Moyes eyes, he is no squad player.

Not really, they are more worthy players than him, i would have Adnan, Zaha and even Lingard ahead of him.

We should play Nani/Kagawa and Valencia as our wingers with the option of playing Wellbeck if required so by my calculation there is no room for Young in the squad.

When he was at Villa, I always use to say that Ashley Young was seemingly only ever brilliant when he was playing for something/motivated in some way. That either generally came in the form of a) a new contract b) trying to get a call-up c) playing for a move to a big team or d) playing against a big team to prove his worth... in the absence of these factors, he generally looked disinterested and a bit crap, and that's in a Villa shirt.

We have taken away pretty much all of these motivational factors for him, to the point where he is probably a very comfortable man, who is well paid and looks disinterested... he basically needs a large rocket up his arse, or something.

I would agree with that. But again, £17 million for a squad player. And £27 million for another squad player. When can we stop bringing in squad players and bring in some genuine quality?

Now you're just being silly... NUMBERS DAMNIT

Not to go over this again, but he was a last ditch signing, and at the price Moyes cannot afford to see\use him as a squad player. the fans will be on him and so will the board.

he wasn't last ditch, we were always going to sign him, the club just went about it in a shit manner.

He's got no fecking balls. He's a great big pussy. The least a winger should be doing is running at his man, putting his opposition fullback on the back foot and trying to beat him. Its always the same with Young, back to the goal, take a few uncomfortable looking touches, knock it back/infield, spin away and come back, rinse and repeat. Its fecking tumescent rubbish with no risk. fecking run at someone, attack your man, try and beat him. Do something, you useless, gutless twat.

 Unanimous vitroil - this must be a Caf first. Even Richardson had some defenders.

He's squad player quality though.

Oh how I long for the days when I used to moan about Nani losing the ball and shooting too often from bad positions.

Yeah, this. What does he even do? It's not just that's shit - he is -, that he does things awfully - and he does - but he doesn't actually attempt anything that should be in his job description as a winger. It's a total mystery.

i was happy when we got him, he was excellent at villa becoming a real threat with his pace and crossing, he was bagging plenty of goals for them too, i felt sure the step up would push him even further on. He had a reasonable start to his time here but hasn't kicked on since and looks out of his depth now. doubt we'll be able to move him on easily if his wage rumours are true so play him in domestic cups and against lower half league sides and he'll do a job. not good enough for the big ties

Personally I didn't want him at the club. I'd rather give a young a chance than him. Januzaj looks a real talent and I'd rather give minutes to him. But I don't have a "problem" with young as a squad player. I do have am issue with him seemingly so important to the first team.

He's squad player quality though.

Yep he's probably a first team player for a team like Liverpool (or Everton). Wouldn't get anywhere near a starting spot for any of Europe's top teams. He's kind of like Michu, a good player just not top tier.

I was happy when we got him, too. I thought he'd be decent. At this point however he doesn't even do a job against the lower half of the table.

He might be slightly useful if we played a high-tempo, counter-attacking football. But we don't. Not anymore.

He does nothing of note. He doesn't even try stuff. As a winger, if he was trying to beat his man at least you could credit him for trying to do something and giving it a go. He's just happy to pass the ball off and avoid a situation where he has to take some responsibility and try to do something positive. He's a pussy.

I don't think I've ever seen such unanimous dismissal of a player on here before, even from posters who usually go to great lengths to defend under-fire footballers at this club. It's telling really.

Desperately trying to think of something positive to say about him and the best I can come up with is.................

............Hang on......................there must be something......................well, I suppose at least he isn't scouse.

I find myself completely unwilling to try to look for a positive in Young.

I don't think that's even realistic, he's not Michu quality. Definately Liverpool/Everton quality though. He's so frustrating. I literally want to slap him and tell him to grow a pair.

Sorry, I was talking about Fellaini, off-topic. Young's around West Ham or Stoke level. He'd do well at those clubs.
