Smashley Young

That original ankle injury was a bad one in Dec11 I don't think he has/will really recovered from that.

Good little cameo today. Looked sharp, and put in two brilliant crosses. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Yes. Think he did well today considering he didn't have a proper preseason.

Quality squad player. Still don't get the hate.

Decent cameo, but I don't he is suited for right wing at all, he doesn't have trickery or pace to play on that side, which is what you need if you are right footed(Beckham would probably disagree though). If he is gonna play him, he should play him on the left.

You sure about that? Imo he just hesitates to take on his man, but I've seen him burn past Kyle Walker and he had an amazing run last season where he intercepted the ball and blasted past the defense and delivered the ball to RVP, who missed. He's just a bit timid ;) Has he bulked up a bit btw?

Well, he certainly hasn't showed too much of that trickery during his United time. He has pace, but I he isn't Valencia or even Zaha looking by pace.

And that run was through the middle of the pitch if I remember well.

Did really well today when he came on. Nothing new though, young has always been like this. He has some good runs of form where he can play like this but then he goes to being invisible. Great to have as a 3rd choice winger though.

Nothing to disagree with here. What annoys me is his seeming hesitation to take on a man, even players considerably slower than him. He played quite well yesterday, and his crossing was certainly up to scratch. Hopefully he can only improve on last season.

Good cameo from Young. He was infinitely more direct than Valencia and put in a couple of testing crosses.

Had Young played the whole game, I've a sneaky feeling we'd have nicked a 1-0 win.

He's bulked up a bit I think, or maybe I haven't seen him play since last season so not really sure.

He had one cross blocked and another pretty dangerous one in, otherwise Valencia was the more dangerous of the two for around sixty minutes until he got tired.

Glad to see him back; unlike most on here I like him so hopefully he can get in some good performances for us.

Not the best of performances for me, not that he got a lot of time, didn't do himself any harm, but to become more than a squad player I think he needs to do something that sticks in your mind and I can't see it happening, it's a shame really as I know he is capable, we have seen him cut in and score screamers, the talent is there.

I want to say it's confidence as is the obvious reason, but it should then be underlined that he has not been 'confident' for the best part of his years at Manchester United so far, perhaps it's not mental to assume that perhaps he doesn't have the mental capacity to handle the pressure/expectation

Valencia was as blunt as a butter knife.

His good defensive work is masking his minimal attacking contribution. He never attempted to beat Cole, played the ball back when he was in crossing positions and didn't dovetail well with Jones (granted, that's not all his fault).

Young gave us the directness that Valencia was supposed to.

He did try and he did beat him a few times. I think Valencia had 15-20 poor minutes before he came off which probably obscured his overall performance for people. At half time everyone said he was our most dangerous player.

Nah valencia was completely ineffective going forward. It's about time he got benched

I thought he put it a very good defensive performance - he did some fantastic work in pressing and winning the ball back. The same issues resurfaced throughout though in terms of being too conservative in his play - he's constantly looking for the easy ball and taking the sting out of attacks. At one point in the second half, the ball broke to him on the right side, inside the box and he played the ball backwards. I don't know what it is with him, as a couple of seasons ago, his first thought was the hit the byline and fire in a cutback.

In his defence, playing with Jones isn't helping him in the slightest.

Good to see him back playing, needs more game time and must deliver more quality balls into our strikers.

he should be on the left, really, seeing as we have no other capable winger there.

He keeps cutting inside though on the left, annoying as hell because it just kills our attacks when he inevitably passes back to Evra or Carrick

I thought last night he was a bit more direct on the right and it makes crossing easier. I think it was against Norwich away last season when he played on the right and it was one of his few good games

Yeah, same here, he can easily use his pace against slower fullbacks, and he sure will face them.

I thought you weren't going to watch the game after you saw lineups. :p

He's more suited for the Right. Save the left wing for Nani and Kagawa.

For Anfield I want Young as Right Wing and Valencia at RB.

Young really isn't very good. Let's not hide that fact because he's a United player.

Well he did star for Villa that seemed to be a pretty damn good side getting 6th place consistently and Young put up very good goal and assist tallies and established himself an international player.

He is a good squad player for United.

I was underwhelmed when we bought him, especially for the fee, but he's a good squad player, albeit a very expensive squad player. He's probably 4th or 5th choice if everyone is fit (Welbeck, Valencia/Nani, Kagawa, Young/Zaha(?) - though it's criminal that Kagawa isn't first pick!). Is there another team in the league who has a better 4th choice winger?

Don't really ever want to see him starting for us again tbh. Would rather us use Zaha or Januzaj because at least they might create a chance or two. Good luck with that 30 goals + assists prediction Cider.
