Smashley Young

Nani started 7 out of 26 games this season so it's kind of hard to say how he would have done with the game time the other 2 have had. Young has been in the side for a wee while now, and he did play quite well at Reading and City. Today wasn't great though, he was quite average.

He was alright, he's much better when he drifts in from the left and gets involved in the passing moves in comparison to when he's stuck out on the wing and swinging in crosses.

Probably been our best winger this season which says it all really.

Our best winger this season, isn't exactly a compliment right now sadly.

I thought he played reasonably well. He at least looks to try and do something with the ball unlike Valencia right now and gets in good positions. Only negative in his game today was the final ball/shoot was off for him like the rest of our strikers and wingers. And when it did work, Swansea's defenders threw themselves in the way somehow.

To say Young's our best winger thus far shows how far the standards have dropped with our wingers. United fans aren't used to this.

:wenger:

Is this what we're classing as really good these days? He was ok. But mostly he repeatedly crossed the ball in without looking, he does this time and time and time and time again, even when he has time and space. You'd think someone would tell him off for it.

This last page of this thread is hilarious. The player was absymal for 3 months, puts in 3 good shifts and all of a sudden everyone who criticised him is a disgrace and was wrong.

Oh leroy you captured it oh so well. I wanted to throw my remote at the TV in frustration. There were at least 3 times where he was played through and instead of taking a look he just made a limp attempt of a cross. I don't understand it. Can't be a confidence thing can it?

He was much better than Valencia but that's not saying much. Our wingers are currently dross, we've gone from a team with the most formidable wings in Europe last season to absolute trash - the only threat we seem to create down the wings seems to be from Evra and Rafael.

Indeed, Rafael and Evra have 5 goals between them. Young and Valencia have none... :wenger:

It would of been useful if our strikers did their job and actually get into the box. Most of the time they were just stading still on the edge of the box while clearly being marked.

I was more disappointed in RVPs and Rooneys laziness than Young not crossing it right to their feet.

I thought he made some excellent runs yesterday and was unlucky that swansea were on form defensively.

I can see him kicking on to the kind of form he was in when he first joined. Also he helps Evra out defensively no end

Nani has played in the cup though and scored a pretty beautiful goal.

That whole "situation" needs sorting IMO as things like this can cost you.

Yes, Nani who has rarely featured has gave more than these 2. Well Young has been performing better as of late, but he has had the luxury of a good run in the side. Valencia seems to be undroppable at times.

That's a good point mate. Forgot about that. In that case, it was a collective feck up.

He's been one of our best players of late.

This. Give credit where due. Tons of abuses when he plays shit, most justified, but the moment he plays well it's always 'because others are shit'. It's somewhat true now (our wingers being shit) but you just have to believe he IS a good player who contributes much when properly used and on half decent form.

It's the typical "backhanded compliment" that our worst fellow supporters get away with. Remember when Park was still a United player? Though he was relatively popular, you could always sense that a lot of his popularity was "fake". Compliments like "he's great in the big games" or "he's a good player to have" or "he always works his socks off", it can all be translated to: "I really don't like the player and I don't think he's good enough to play regularly for us, but I'm too much of a coward to admit it, so I'll just hand him one of these backhanded compliments instead".

I haven't read a single good word about Park after he left(which actually annoys me). It's probably gonna be the same with Young, even if he continues to have good runs like he currently has.

I won't write an essay like I did in the Valencia thread but I think Ashley Young deserves a fair bit of credit for his recent performances. He has turned up in all of the big games this season and he has put in a good shift in in recent games too. The fact that I had to go three pages back in the Manchester United forum to find this thread is probably testament to the fact that there hasn't been anything to criticise him about recently. Credit where it's due though he's been a good attacking outlet of late and he covers Evra well.

He has improved a lot recently, credits to him on that. Atm he is in very good form, let's hope he will never return to shit mode again.

He's been in good form for most of his time here he just came back in shocking form after his injury. I think he's been a good signing.

Where there's competition they'll always be extra criticism and Young has two fantastic wingers to compete with.

Great to watch at the moment, looking like he's finding that Villa-form that surely made Fergie want him.

It goes to further highlight the height of mongishness that goes into 'should be dropped to the bench to gain form'.

When we have had Nani and Young on the wings we have been great. Can't think of any other pairing that has made us flow like that and that can come inside and combine with the midfielders and attackers.

i like park as a player and a person but I don't think he was good enough to play 40+ matches a season for us. How is it a backhanded compliment to say he is a squad player? Fantastic value, good service, not top level utd quality but we always have players like that in our squad.

Young on the other hand i have zero time for. I think park was a harder worker, more intelligent player in the short passing game, and was one much smaller wages and lower fee.

Young is NOT fantastic value and at the same time average. Good enough for a squad spot in our 18 but should not be anywhere near our ideal first XI.

Valencia is playing poorly, nani is having contract issues/injuries, giggs is 39, welbeck is a striker...right now young is playing the best of a group of wide players that have question marks all over them.

In the land of blind men, the one-eyed man is king.

I think he's been decent. From the way I see it, think we fans have lowered our expectations because our wingers have been that poor and we're just not used to that. He's had some really good performances though, I'll give him that. I don't know how exactly to convey but there's something about him that I simply remain unconvinced. I think he'll be a good and potentially a very good winger for us but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Maybe an improvement in his decision-making and the execution of it will cause me to favor him more. But even then, I doubt my opinion on him will change. As for now, he's doing alright.

EDIT: I agree pocco. Our wingers really have been that bad this season. No amount of revisionism or over-compensation for their improvements will change that.

The thing that pleases me recently, and was evident again for the first goal yesterday, is that he's recognised he needs to get to the byline and use his left more. Even if it results in a weak or untidy cross it makes him a much bigger threat.

When he was having that awful spell he would always come back inside because he had no confidence to go to the byline.

Young strikes me as the kind of person who will go away after a bad performance and think about what he needs to do differently.

In the last England game he made a brilliant assist by attacking the full-back and crossing with his left having not really gone on the outside once for United in the preceding matches. His reaction to the assist aswell was one of frustration, as if he was angry at himself for not doing it more often.

I think Fergie had probably drilled it into him after the previous United match (can't remember who it was against) in which he was pretty toothless and I was glad to see some aggression from him.

Another pretty good game for him. Will be an option on this right side if Valencia doesnt find his form

Getting back into things is the evil-looking Young, promising signs from him today.

Should be ahead of Valencia on current form, decent performance from him today.

Some good deliveries from him, got lucky a few times. Still runs like a toddler whereby you just know he's going to fall over any second.

He fecked up three moves with I think his first three touches and I expected him to have a mare but he turned it on and played well, hope the injury is minor.

"runs like a toddler" so true, it's like he cannot find any balance while running.Otherwise a good match from him and he presented himself as a possible solution on the right when Valencia is off form or tired. One very good cross to Hernandez could have been an assist

It's almost as if Young doesn't really understand forward momentum, instead believing that to push himself forwards, he must generate power by wiggling side-to-side and arching himself over with crane-arms either side. It's like he is attempting an extremely strange and almost horizontal slalom-run.
