Smashley Young

He had as much influence as anyone in winning the away game we could have easily lost.

Good performance from him yesterday. Needs to take some confidence from that and get a run going. Wih Nani out for a while we'll need it.

Some very nice flicks against reading that released evra and anderson that led to goals. Looks more inclined at times to run with the ball and cause the defence problems instead of just holding it and passing it back

I think he had a solid performance, his delivery can always improve. Sometimes you just dont know what he is going to dish up.

I thought he played very well. He was involved in a lot of our best build up play. It'd be nice if he took his man on a bit more but he was at least adventurous with his passing and kept trying to float good crosses in.

Probably the best performance by one of our wingers this season, which isn't saying much, but it does give me a bit of hope for the City game at least.

You really think so? His crosses were woeful and his shooting was, I imagine, funny for the opposition fans to watch.

He wasn't bad, but nor was he good.

He was good by the standards of our wingers this season and contributed towards our goals/attacks. That's enough for me.

Not a surprise that his best performance has come playing with a mobile midfield. Since his comeback the Chelsea game and this one has been his standout games. Co-incidentally playing with Cleverley and Anderson.

PS: If anyone didn't know this already, imo the midfield is the root of all most our problems.

Excellent point.....
The central midfield is the root of our problems. Once the midfield is mobile enough to actually beat their markers by dribbling or by 1-2 triangles, our wingers function effectively but Fergie would then ruin the settings by playing Scholes and Giggs alongside Carrick! You can almost feel it now that Scholes and Giggs would start against Yaya Toure, Barry and Garcia and fans would turn on our wingers instead of the OAPs....

I think it helps that him and evra have started to form more of an understanding.

That lovely scoop pass down the wing by young would of looked stupid if evra didn't continue his run. they are starting to trust eachothers runs more and linking up much better.

I think he deserves to start against city again.

That was more down to awfull defending then anything else, those things will never work against city, reading's defence in that game was awfull.

Exeter City maybe.

Quality. Productive and hard working.

Makes a lot of those posts a few weeks ago look very stupid.

It was simply a bad spell after returning from injury

Possibly his best 45 minutes in a United shirt

Doesn't compare to Arsenal at home last year but certainly his best outing since he returned from injury. Would love to see him cut in and curl one past Hart.

I'm being made very stupid by Ashley Young. Hope he makes me look like a twat in the next half.

Well the parts where he's done well have been in his passing/linkup down the left side and his ethic tracking back with a couple of good defensive contributions. Rather than taking his man on and putting in great crosses like we'd have expected when he was signed.

He gets slated plenty on here but he plays practically every week, meaning he obviously does what Fergie tells him to. Been great today.

There is a definite attitude in him to really raise his game to the occasion. I agree a lot of this spark is from being really up for this game and it is showing.

Get on lad and get yoursel on the score sheet.

Not true at all. We signed him after he played pretty much a full season in behind the striker, impressing far more with his passing than his crossing. For England and Villa. And we all expected that defensive contribution.

This is the Ashley Young we bought.

The lads running at defenders again, taking them on, driving into the space ahead. Its just much more effective. That way, when he does have to pass to Evra, or inside, its not so obvious that he's about to do it. He's mixing it up.

Good to see he's visibly upped his game recently. Long may it continue.

I can't understand the criticism that Young gets from some United fans. What's wrong with a hard-working, pacy winger that is at ease beating defenders as he as with helping out in defence? Throw in the fact that he seems to love being here and understands what it means to be a United player, then we pretty much have a terrific player on our hands.

I really hope the nay-sayers start to get off his back now, he doesn't deserve the flak he receives.

So you're saying he completely lost all of his crossing ability by playing a season off the striker. Righto.

His strength was clearly crossing the ball.

Yes, he was a good crosser. He is a good crosser. I'm just saying we bought him for the whole package - his work-rate, his passing, his pace and his crossing. I'd say his crossing was far from the most important feature of his game.
