Sir Alex told to target world's best players

Too much.

It's the same thing from the press every summer.

Early in the summer you talk about huge sums of money to be spent in order to whet the readers' appetite.

Then you spend the next month spinning tales of supposed transfer targets.

As the summer draws to a close the papers talk about why the huge sums of money promised earlier aren't being spent, so the fans feel like the money promised at the beginning of the summer MUST be spent or else the club is doomed.

The whole thing is just a way for newspapers to retain their readers even though no actual matches are being played.

Now look, I have always fallen into the camp that believes that the Glazers have given SAF plenty of money to spend if he needs it. But that doesn't mean for a moment that I believe these stories of a massive spending spree. SAF said the summer would be busy, not that it would be excessive.

That's it in a nutshell. Football sells newspapers - fact. And the biggest name in UK football is Man Utd. - fact. Now with no on-field action the papers have to go with off-field action so apart from the odd story about players getting involved in punch-ups in nightclubs, leg-overs after nightclubs and the mangerial merry go-round there's only the transfer market speculation to comment on. So they make up their stories, justify them as quoted from 'sources close to the player', lawyers, agents or 'sources within the club' and sell their tawdry rags while the world goes on around us.

Now we all know that players will leave the club - it happens every year. We can all think of half a dozen that we would consider surplus to requirements and we equally know that players will be brought in to replace them. So nothing new there, then - it's just the names that are different and the numbers are higher.

Didn't the Glazers promise Rooney some signings? He's a muppet leader!
