Manchester United's owners have made it clear to Sir Alex Ferguson that he has a substantial transfer budget at his disposal for big-name targets during a summer in which the club's bank account will swell to £170m.

The £17m signing of the Atlético Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea will not be the last big signing during a close season in which the club will spend more than in recent years, and Ferguson has been given the green light to target "the best players in the world".

The Glazers have consistently maintained that the manager has funds to spend, but fans have questioned the club's ability to compete for the biggest names in recent years, amid concern at the club's debt levels and interest commitments.

Having smashed the pay ceiling to give Wayne Rooney a contract worth around £200,000 a week in the wake of his threat to leave, the owners are said to be "relaxed" about the prospect of Ferguson breaking the bank to sign a marquee name.

It was the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80m in 2009, followed by the departure of Carlos Tevez to Manchester City weeks later, that raised concerns among Manchester United fans worried that the demands of servicing the loans loaded on to the club had left it unable to compete for the best players.

Club insiders say that any acquisitions will have to fit the template followed by Manchester United under the Glazers, with an emphasis on younger players who will retain value. The club has bought one player in the past 14 years who was over 27 and cost more than £3m – Dimitar Berbatov for £31m.

According to Manchester United's most recent accounts, the club have £113m in the bank. That has fuelled suspicions that the owners will withdraw some of it in dividends but insiders claim it is there for transfers and to guard against unforeseen events. "What Sir Alex wants, Sir Alex will get," said one.

That figure will rise to £170m by the end of the summer, once season-ticket revenue for the coming season is banked. Despite racking up a record pre-tax loss of £109m last year, much of that was attributable to one-off costs associated with a £500m bond issue.

The chief executive, David Gill, has repeatedly stated that the club will comfortably be able to pay the £45m annual interest on those bonds, especially as it now owns 26% of them itself, and still has about £60m in cash every year thanks to global growth in commercial and TV revenues.

Glazers give Manchester United's manager green light for summer spree | Football | The Guardian

I am wanking at the article this very moment. No Jewish Christmas this summer.

I thought you'd be pissed off that De-Gea didn't spend another 1-2 years before opting for Barca - RM ?

My view on that. VDS is the best keeper United can possible have. Any kid to replace VDS cant be an improvement. so I am not much excited about De Gea. If VDS announced that he stays for another year then i would get excited.

Usual speculative shit from tbe Guardian. They always make out they know exactly what Fergie and Gill are planning, when they do not have a clue.

hah thats a good example of how depressed are United fans. They just refuse to trust any article stating that United will spend money on transfers. Dont give up your hope man. BELIEVE!

Sneijder will not come - his agent has dismissed rumours linking him with a move away from Inter.
"According to a report on Sky today the Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already got three of his transfer targets set up already, and they will be all be announced as soon as the transfer window opens."
It'll be David de Gea, Raphael Varran and Ashley Young.

Not sure Sneijder fits that profile.

So we only have about £170 million to spend! That won't even get you a Ronaldo or a Messi!! fecking Glazers!!!!!

The best summer since that beautiful summer when United signed Nani + Ando + Hargreaves + Tevez?

Shame though non of them are likely to start UCL final.

Tevez definetly won't.

We hear this every summer and we'll continue to hear it every summer till the Glazers go.

It's the same thing from the press every summer.

Early in the summer you talk about huge sums of money to be spent in order to whet the readers' appetite.

Then you spend the next month spinning tales of supposed transfer targets.

As the summer draws to a close the papers talk about why the huge sums of money promised earlier aren't being spent, so the fans feel like the money promised at the beginning of the summer MUST be spent or else the club is doomed.

The whole thing is just a way for newspapers to retain their readers even though no actual matches are being played.

Now look, I have always fallen into the camp that believes that the Glazers have given SAF plenty of money to spend if he needs it. But that doesn't mean for a moment that I believe these stories of a massive spending spree. SAF said the summer would be busy, not that it would be excessive.

Muppetry aside, what we need is probably players around 20-30m marks.

As much as we like Ronaldo, Messi, Ozil, and all the marquee name RL football is not FM, even in FM you can't sign them because theys imply refuse to move.

dude you are killing my hard on there.

Schweini, bitte!

i'd love that but we'd be taken to the cleaners by Bayern as he only signed a new contract earlier in the season.

I also think it's a shame that Sahin went to Madrid considering his price.

Sahin. They'll just feck him up and probably end up losing money on him

I'd say Ferguson'll be signing fairly big players alright. He mentioned earlier in the season that United'll complete with the big spenders as that's the trend in football.

He'll have to sign established players to complete the team minus Giggs and Scholes in the short term

Basically, it's muppet-mania
