Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

I heard a Rumour from somebody before that said Giggs was retiring and moving as an assistant coach, and that Bale would be signed and given the number 11 shirt.

I thought it was all complete B.S, but considering how this week has gone so far, im not ruling anything out.

Its important to remember we had pretty much lost him back in 2002, I personally don't feel an overwelming sense of sadness, i'm just eternally grateful for all he has given us and weirdly excited about the future.

He's given us more than we could have expected in our wildest dreams and he's right about retiring at the right time, a hip replacement will reduce his mobility more than most expect especially during the first few months, so that is probably a sign of his body telling him it is time to call it a day.

In the meanwhile there my be no better chance to usher in a new era as there is no guarantee that his successor (assuming its either Klopp, Moyes or Jose) will be more readily available in a seasons to come than they are now (with Klopp this might not be the case but who's to say who could be chasing him in a seasons time).

I will always be eternally grateful for all he has given us, but I honestly have been bracing myself for this day for quite a few seasons now and for some reason it just seems like the right time, i'm sure others will feel differently as is their right.

It's neither here nor there right now, but I reckon the club will spend a shit load this summer.
At least we've a young team that can adapt to a new manager and his philosophies.

He has been at the club since before I was born. It just won't be the same without him.

Hope he is fine and healthy and that isn't the reason for his retirement.

This fecking sucks

Something doesn't seem right to me. He's been talking about how he's going nowhere and how he can sign a big player this summer if he wants etc. I hope it isn't health related. Still in too much shock to really take it in.

I wonder whether this is partly why there has been so "little value in the market" for the past few years. He has left the club in a tremendous position for any new manager - there should be cash to spend, if they want to, and the youth in the side means that there's no pressing need to replace anybody immediately. Simply put, he's given any successor a huge amount of flexibility in terms of what they can do.

I feel as though I ought to put some sort of tribute here, but the truth is that I've never known anyone else as Manchester United manager - he embodies Manchester United for me, and the idea of someone else being at the helm is frankly bizarre. I don't suppose it will sink in until I see someone else on the touchline, but at the very least, I can say that he has brought me some utterly wonderful memories over the past couple of decades, and I will never forget them.

Good post. I wouldn't rule out you being right on what you said in the first paragraph at all.

Such a surreal, sad day.

That rumour was from a chick on Twitter.

Keys and Gray speculating that he might not have been happy about Gills leaving.

They are only good at that.

Rumours are circulating that Sir Alex broke down while telling his staff and squad of his decision, and many of them hearing lot broke down in tears as well.

feck it, It still hasn't sunk in.

It screams to me of fergie only wanting maureen to replace him, and this being shit or bust to get that.

If he went to chelsea, there is no way he would then move directly to united in a couple of years time.

Lucky Rafa's available.

I feel so sad, I've always known the club with him at the helm, it's going to be bizarre seeing someone else on the touchlines. I'm really going to miss him, his fighting spirit, his wit, his lies about team selection before big games...

A bit worried about the future, but at the moment I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact he's leaving. :(

The more I think about it, the more I think something went wrong behind the scenes that led to this sudden announcement.

1. He always said he wants to leave the team when they're rock solid. We aren't rock solid in the middle. Our football this season have come under criticism alot.

2. He was talking alot about summer transfers just last week. 1 or players identified, admiring Lewandowski, 1 big name transfer etc.

3. He always seemed to want one final push for the champions league. I didn't think this was it.

Something went on behind the scenes. I'm pretty sure of it.

This. Great post.

Are we just like any other club now?

What?

We were special before Fergie, we just had a spell of not winning anything to go along with it after Sir Matt.

Our history is one of triumph through adversity, and not just Munich, its hard to beleive now in the world of internet tribalism and conspiracies about the FA, but when I was growing up, Manchester United were everyones second club.

What the hell. I saw the stuff last night and thought it was the usual BS but I wake up and it's true?

Wins a league at a canter and decides to call it a day. He did say he wanted to go out on top and I suppose now is a good point for a new manager to come in. We've got enough experience and talented players to hide some of our flaws and weakness to help during a transition and plenty of young players just bedding in. A new manager can come in and just really needs to shape the midfield.

You knew this day would come one day, but it's just so hard to ever imagine him leaving us. Just in sheer shock at how fast it's come around and the manner it's happened. You knew it'd happen, but at the same time you stuppidly couldn't imagine life without Fergie as manager, if that makes sense.

Just an unbelievably strange feeling. Some might disagree but I genuinley believe this is going to be the biggest shake up for decades in English football and depending on our managerial appointment, possibly a massive shake up at the club. A Moyes signing would possibly mean going down a similar route to how we have with SAF, not completely the same but quite a few similar plans and systems etc. Whereas a Mourinho type of appointment would mean a much different approach IMO.

Moyes could be an appointment that might not be overly exciting, but could be smart in the long run. Whereas a Mourinho type appointment could be unbelievably exciting in the short run. feck knows what we're doing...I still think we'll go with Moyes.

Gutted.

But in this era where the word legend is used too much, it doesn't even come close to describing the man who has done so much for not just Manchester United but for football as a whole.

We have been incredibly fortunate to have had him over the years, I hope we find stability even a quarter of that moving forward.

Thank you Sir Alex.
