Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

Bullshit. Fergie was always going to make his own decision regardless of the board and who was available.

I think Fergie called it at the start of the season. Reckon he also wanted to leave last season but no way would he leave after what happened last season.

Such an odd feeling.

I saw the rumours yesterday and just put it down to the usual tabloid nonsense.

Shame about Europe but going out on number 20 in such dominant fashion is a fitting way to relinquish the throne.

I wonder whether this is partly why there has been so "little value in the market" for the past few years. He has left the club in a tremendous position for any new manager - there should be cash to spend, if they want to, and the youth in the side means that there's no pressing need to replace anybody immediately. Simply put, he's given any successor a huge amount of flexibility in terms of what they can do.

I feel as though I ought to put some sort of tribute here, but the truth is that I've never known anyone else as Manchester United manager - he embodies Manchester United for me, and the idea of someone else being at the helm is frankly bizarre. I don't suppose it will sink in until I see someone else on the touchline, but at the very least, I can say that he has brought me some utterly wonderful memories over the past couple of decades, and I will never forget them.

I feel so saddened. But it's time to look forward to something new.

Football will never see his like again. He's a product of his era and his upbringing and that won't ever be repeated in the game.

I'm just grateful we saw him here.

What a shock. We all knew it was on the cards at some point over the next year or two but I always thought (and hoped) that he had another Champions League in him.

Such a mixed bag of emotions. Gutted that he's leaving whilst at the same time delighted that I've had the privilege of supporting this team during such an era.

Thank you Sir Alex, English football will not be the same. Everyone will miss his presence from the most die hard of United fans to the bitterest of rivals.

Let the silly season commence.

Summer Muppetry is now going to esculate tenfold.

Not only are we going to sign 5 or 6 of the best players in modern football, but now we'll be compiling dream teams of staff.

Mourinho as boss. Moyes assistant, Klopp first team coach, AVB cleaning the boots and Ole Gunnar wearing the Fred the Red costume

This is like finishing a game then just not playing it ever again cause there is nothing to do. I don't know who'll come in to replace him, if he can ever be replaced, it's just surreal to be honest.

He has been at the club since before I was born. It just won't be the same without him.

Hope he is fine and healthy and that isn't the reason for his retirement.

This fecking sucks

Poor Zaha. You think you've signed for United to play for Alex Ferguson and you don't get one day.

Can see why the players have taken time to think over their contracts.

Rio, Nani etc... maybe they knew Fergie was on the way out and wanted to see who replaces him before committing.

What a weird scenario this is?!

I think the Madrid result really took it out of him :(

I think he already knew before the game, which is probably why he was so devastated/angry at the result. Lots of us on here had the feeling he was going to retire after that game.

The only thing that might ease the pain and shock now is for us to hire someone like Mourinho. I think hiring Moyes will displease a lot of fans and that sucks for him because he cant really prove himself either until the new season starts.

ben smith BBC: "Now if the next part of this story pans out as i was told yesterday, English football might just implode".

As suggested, #MUFC do have a succession plan. The new man will be announced after he's quit his current job.

Would Moyes joining United be something that would make football implode? Don't think so...

So what would?

Rafa????

:nervous:

Cruyff is coming from his retirement. Either this, or United are signing a young guy who has been successful in Football Manager.

Ben Smith has to be suggesting at Rooney going. I can't see what else he means by that.

fecks sake :(
Why the false hope a few days ago?

If anything the shock was slightly taken out because of the rumours last night. Still absolutely gutted though.

I hate this feeling. Absolutely hate it. I always knew despite any dissapointments, Fergie will always make it right. Now there's no Fergie I have a strange feeling of fear for the club. I really hope Rio signs that contract, because it's going to be players like him, Giggs, and Vidic to stabilise the ship next season.
