United without him just doesnt feel right. He's everything I love about the club... I wish he would have stayed forever

Does anyone know what contributed to this sudden announcement? It's like it came all of a sudden, considering he was just recently talking about transfer activity and I would have thought would want a shot at the Champions League again. I'm sure there's something going on behind the scenes.

Thanks Fergie for everything. Happy for him but feel uncomfortably numb please don't give us Jose as Mr Moyes is more in tune with Uniteds way!

Scousers on twitter looks delighted.

Like this decision has any impact on the or something

The fact that they are delighted just further highlights what a great man and manager he is... though they probably don't ealise they're highlighting the fact themselves...

Sir Alex, one of the best managers of all time. After 26 years of success in the game, we all owe him a tribute.

Classy

Well that's ruined Sundays trophy presentation.

I don't know- it just needs to be a celebration of not just this trophy but his legacy and all he achieved. feck though, it is going to take a long time to sink in.

Wonderful manager, amazing man - true legend. Writing was on the wall imho with Gill going, the statue and the renaming of the stand. Completely different United in terms of backroom staff next year. Its been a long and successful ride and the real reason is that man. We will miss him

Anything to do with cutting off Mourinho going to Chelsea?

Although rumours Chelsea won't pay 20m for him, so would we?

35 year Vincent.

But fair play.

Absolutely gutted.

Apart from the moral victory shite he comes out with, Kompany does seem like a genuinely decent chap.

Am I the only person excited by the next chapter in United's story? Fergie's done more than any other manager will do for the club, and I'm gutted, but I saw this coming.

It feels worse than I expected it to be...

Just hope the fans will organize an amazing good bye thingy for him

Disappointed obviously, but not surprised.

It'll be exciting to see what way the club will go now. Change can be the harbinger of good things.

It's been a great to have Sir Alex lead our team following in Sir Matts footsteps. It's natural to be sad but it's a new dawn for the club. Sir Alex will still be at the club and I think that'll be brilliant for the fans. I can see it now. The paddy and Sir Alex show. People will get to know the man better. The future's still bright.

Incidently, I think the way we were bundled out of Europe's still a disgrace. You can create a great team but I'd rather us and Sir Alex weren't cheated out of the competition

Cant believe this. At 34 years of age cant barely remember a time when Fergie wasnt United manager.

I would say given the age profile of the Caf 90% cant even remember a time without Fergie.

I was saving up money to make my first ever OT trip next season.

Absolutely gutted

Kompany from some interviews I have seen seems like a good person. Classy indeed.

Personally I don't see him going anywhere. Probably a bit of excited panic at the club that Mourinho (the only manager suitably able to replace Ferguson) being available but if he wasn't would Ferguson still have planned to retire so hastily?

Mourinho is hardly 'the future' either. He's a three year manager at best. Jose to Chelsea will be completed and Ferguson to carry on, probably tutoring a possible replacement under him for a few more years (Moyes?).

He's a once in a lifetime figure, isn't he? Not just the man himself, but the mentality he instilled within the club. Never say die, and all that. We've been doing it for years, scrapping for every game until the dying seconds. We have success built on kicking teams when they're knackered in the final few minutes, by getting some sort of second wind. We never knew when we were beaten, and always gave everything to defy it. He's become so incredible at keeping that win at all costs mentality going that when United do lose a game, it doesn't feel right at all.

I've never properly known another United manager. I was a toddler when he took over. He was manager throughout my entire childhood, whilst I was at high school, and through my 20's to the present day. The day had to come, but it almost felt like it never would. Some things were just certainties. Death. Taxes. Fergie is United boss.

I'm in a right crabby mood now. It was announced on the end of Lorraine Kelly's TV show. That's just how monumental it is, that not just football is at a standstill. It's so much bigger than that. My Mrs doesn't like football one iota, and didn't understand why I was getting so emotional about it. She asked "So is he who made Man Utd good then?" and I told her to feck off.

Oh hell, knew this was going to come sooner rather than later but still United without Fergie is almost unbelievable.I remember the years before, when we were a big club with a second rate team.He changed the lot and for bringing the pride back to our club Sir Alex thank you, an incredible man and manager. We will never see his like again. Can't believe it.

Erm...

shocked and really sad. Thanks Sir Alex...you have given me some of the biggest highs of my life. A living lengend. I'm totally numb and words don't really truly convey what he has done for this club and what he has mean for us fans...

Bullshit. Fergie was always going to make his own decision regardless of the board and who was available.

What a shock. We all knew it was on the cards at some point over the next year or two but I always thought (and hoped) that he had another Champions League in him.

Such a mixed bag of emotions. Gutted that he's leaving whilst at the same time delighted that I've had the privilege of supporting this team during such an era.

Thank you Sir Alex, English football will not be the same. Everyone will miss his presence from the most die hard of United fans to the bitterest of rivals.

Let the silly season commence.
