5 Rojo is done, di Maria 7 is almost done, 9 Wilson will be done next season.

The question is Vidal 15 or 17 ? ;)

Vidal only has himself to blame. You snooze you lose in the numbers game.

He'll have to make do with what's left.

I think if we were going to sign Vidal we would have given 9 to Di Maria and kept 7 free for Vidal.

Balague has got most of the details of this transfer pretty spot on so far. No reason to believe he will be wrong on Di Maria wearing the No.7 shirt. I would say he is 99% percent certain to be our next No.7.

Will be good to see that number playing regularly again.

Eh? How exactly do you figure that? History dictates that #7 is usually for our world class (bar the last few years) wingers. Di Maria is exactly that.

Like Cantona and Robson?

There's no particular history but what you want to apply to it. The shirt wasn't even a particualrly big deal before Eric retired.

Well, true, recent history may have been a better phrasing. I think Di Maria suits the shirt more than Vidal does, although I'm still not sure how someone can possibly 'suit a number', but such are the oddities of football.

Why do you have to mention his colour? If you were talking about Phil Jones, would you have said the 'new white United hero'?

What the hell im on vacation so i couldnt reply to all the tags. I obviously said blacket as a replacement for rio ferdinand naming him as 5 who is clearly a black cult icon and has been a big pressence.

Why would i be racist? Id be mocking my own race then.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Di Maria is still without a number but it's said that he will get the #7, my thinking is if that is the case why haven't the club confirmed it yet?

My inner muppetry is saying Vidal is gonna be the new #7!

If the club confirms Di Maria as the new #7 which is also well deserved it will kill my inner muppet.

Can the #17 be reregistered this season since it was given to Nani
Have we submitted our official squad number list yet? I thought that happens after the window closes since teams sign players on the last day? If that is the case, then we can re-use it because we did with Anderson and Mata last season didn't we? Ando started the season wearing #8 and Mata took over.

I really hope Di Maria gets the #7 shirt. He simply oozes #7 from every pore - he's a ballsy, quick, exciting, unpredictable, skilful, world-class match-winner. A bit of Ronaldo, but a bit of Robson, too. His signing would lift us massively, i'd be amazed if he wasn't to wear it. I know the numbers don't matter too much to most people (understandably), but it would surely be a huge anti-climax if he were to end up with something else?

I am surprised that so many people want Wilson for the #9. Perhaps the fact that we aren't in for a striker means that people think he should take it, but we shouldn't give the shirt out to someone for the sake of it. If numbers matter, it should be warranted. If they don't, why can't he keep his current, less attractive number? Unless, of course, people mean for it to be a boost in a Ronaldo-esque way, a means of letting him know we believe in him. I just don't see it though, he won't have too much playing time this season. I'd have him stay with his current number and see how he develops over the next year or two.

With talk of Welbeck and Chicharito both leaving and the #9 shirt free, I'm genuinely starting to think LVG has a #9 transfer up his sleeve that nobody is expecting. No idea who it would be.

Based on the "Anderson Rule of Numbering", I think after Cleverley's most recent performances and applying this rule, he should be 223.

No, pretty sure that once they post the numbers on the site, they don't change. They've stated RVP has #20 and that means unless he's sold, he should remain #20.

In that case if no.9 is given it will be to a new winger or Wilsons promotion, I can't see us signing another striker.

Wilson was sated in the same announcement to have moved from #47 to #49, so for the same reason, I doubt they'll change his number. Must be a personal preference of Wilson's.

If both Chica and Welbeck are sold, can you see us signing a striker?

No, no really to be honest. I'd imagine someone worthy of a starting 11 number would be at least a well known quality striker which I don't see if spending that much considering its in our best interest to sign a CM first and then a CB unless we're going to go bat shit crazy with money.
