Shirt Numbers 5, 7 and 9

I guess they could do a shuffle. Promote someone already at the club to 5, 7 or 9 and give the new lad the number they vacate.

The tweet is clearly intended to get the transfer muppets to keep those fires burning though.

Indeed. Since it is so obvious, one can deduce that the tweet was intended to calm muppet fears as it gives of the impression that we are indeed bringing new faces.
 
I want Rojo to take Vidic's old number. He strikes me as much more of a Vidic than a Rio.

We won't have a 9 and we won't sign Vidal. Blind will take 15 if and when he joins.
 
Overall, it bugs me so much that 2 of the most famous numbers in our club have been left vacant for that long. Regarding the number 9, it's hard to believe none of our strikers ever expressed any interest in wearing that number after Berbatov left; that was already 2 years ago. About number 7... need to say anymore?
 
They've changed before. Hargreaves was assigned No.23 when he joined, but changed to 4 after Heinze left.
He wore 23 on the bench during the Community Shield but he had never been assigned a number until the Premier League season started and he was given 4.
 
7 is a number for an attacker/winger. I hope they don't make Vidal 7, it just would look funny to me.

I agree. For me the number 7 has always been the inspiration or driving force/focal point behind the team. Robson, Cantona, Becks and Ronaldo and of course Best all fitted that role and I think that describes what we would all like Vidal to be or what we perceive him to be if he signs for United.

Best, Robbo, Cantona, Becks and Ronaldo are all that come to my mind. I ignore Owen and Valencia on purpose.
Everyone ignores Owen and Valencia. What is my problem? Most of the players you said I included in mine, and I agree with Best I just forgot to mention him. So literally one player we don't agree on...

In regard to it being a position as you defined it (attacker/winger), as opposed to a club icon. (Figo and Raul having nothing to do with us)

New black United hero Blackett gets 5, Ronaldo comes back and gets 7, and Fellaini clearly showed he can score goals and will be our new 9.

You are confusing your view of the number 7 shirt and United's iconic number 7's particularly Robbo, whom arguably started the legend of it (Best being associated in hindsight) Hence my comment that you thinking a midfielder No.7 looking odd, is an issue I think I have only ever heard of from you, tonight.

Not a midfielder but a defensively inclined one. And not saying Robbo wasn't a good defender from the middle but Vidal imo is a defensive specialist who contributes going forward, not the other way around. I wouldn't give 7 to a player like Vidal, or for that matter a player like Xabi Alonso, Busquets, etc.

As far as I was aware, Vidal is a box to box midfielder that scores goals. Very much in the Robbo mould.


I associate 7 with Beckham, Ronaldo, Cantona, Figo, Raul, etc before I associate it with Robbo.
But then you don't associate the number with Robbo, which I doubt is a common view for United fans.

This discussion is getting a bit frustrating, and is ultimately pointless, so I'll agree to disagree (or agree) I'm not really sure anymore.

I agree with you, which makes it even stranger why we gave it to Owen :lol: Valencia, I can just about understand because on his day, he really was a menace on the wing and made a great deal of chances for us. But Owen.... :lol:
 
The purist in me's annoyed RVP or even Welbeck didn't take 9. There's something about messy squad numbers for first team players that irks me.
Can't we just go back to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 like in the old days!
 
I hoped Smalling would take #5 and I thought Welbeck would want the #9. As it stands.....

Concern with squad numbers seems juvenile to me, I can't be alone.


It sure is, but the idea that Raul, a classic 9 for another club is deemed more relevant to our number 7 shirt than Bryan Robson is depressing.
 
Hopefully they give Januzaj the number 7. Still can't believe Valencia gave that number up. It's the moment when I realized that he should be sold.

Yep, the no. 7 at Manchester United does hold significant importance and is probably the only number I'm ever remotely concerned with in terms of who it is assigned to. I never saw Robson play but know enough about him and the no. 7 to suggest Vidal would be a fine addition to the array of Manchester United no. 7's.
