Sherlock

its not, people just like to whinge.

Its not that people 'like to whinge' its that the show has proven in the past its capable of being very, very good; has an incredibly talented cast; and an incredibly long turn around time in between episodes.

You're right. In comparison to the mountains of utter, utter, shite on TV its still solidly in the upper half, but it was bad by its own standards and the standards of shows that its kept company with in the past. That's why its being criticised.

Just watched it and, to be honest, quite enjoyed it. The quality was nowhere near as high as some of the previous episodes but it kept me entertained.

It wasn't that good, but to be fair, the quality has been in free fall since the end of second season. Last season wasn't that good too, and same about the special episode.

Its just such a forced story with Mary. Take away every scene she's ever been in and there won't be a knock in the overall quality.

Hope moriarty is alive

Not bad, not as great as the previous Seasons (Especially 1 and 2).
Shame that Mary had to die, but her arc was coming to an end anyway.
I hope we get to see more Moriarty related stuff in the next two episodes. Also heard, this could be the last season (:(), so I hope they end it well.

What do people make of the end credits scene of Mary saying "Go to hell Sherlock" ? Also, I think they really went overboard with the on screen Graphics this time round. I don't remember it being so overly used in previous seasons.

Was "E" Scottish or Irish? I was convinced Scottish but just read an article passing her off as Irish and a possibl relation to moriarty

I actually know a major plot twist... so we'll see...

I feel I should care more about John and Mary, but I don't. I know they're trying to do something more character based, which is admirable, but I want to watch Sherlock solve interesting cases with cleverness, preferably without shooting anyone in the head in cold blood. That was about 20 minutes of a decent Sherlock episode, and then an hour of a rather tame spy thriller/melodrama with some characters I know.*

It was alright I suppose, for that, but, I dunno, meh.

*
also for something so overwrought, the "jumping in front of the bullet cliche" followed by Watson's weird emoto-grunting made it all unintentionally quite comical

The grunting really was bad.

I can't understand all the critcism. It wasn't vintage Sherlock, but it's not like it was the Christmas special either.

Now that was proper shite.

Damn guys, all your negativity had me expecting an absolute turd. It wasn't that bad. Sub-par, but not terrible.

But I am sick of the ridiculous coincidences, with all these connections to people he already knows. Will they ever go back to him just solving difficult mysteries?

I thought people were over-reacting reading through the comments but it really was genuinely rubbish.

From memory, the first 2 series contained episodes that were loosely based on stories from the original tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Even season 3's wedding episode incorporated part of an original story, as did the one where Sherlock murdered the villain. Unfortunately, the adaptations seem to get worse as the show goes on. The more it digresses, the poorer it becomes! The whole super agent thing has really fecked it up. Hopefully she's properly dead and they can move on.

I was expecting the worse after skimming through this thread but thought it was ok finally. Not vintage Sherlock, but kept me entertained for 90 minutes, the charisma of the characters works well enough and I didn't find the plot as stupid as some, it seems. I think with there being 3 years since the last real season, the expectations were probably too high for this episode, maybe.

It's just turned into a daft, overwrought melodrama where the only people who seem truly invested are teenage tumblr addicts who post shit like...

OMG! Sherlock fandom tonight be like..

..after episodes. THIS is who likes Sherlock now.

That it started with them again simply handwaving our hero shooting someone in the head because he got outsmarted, should've been a clue that they were going to end it by appealing to shock value/emotion rather than clever plotting.

I know they've got to branch out from simply procedural stuff, but it's not like this is an American show with 22 episodes a season. This is literally something like the 10th episode of the whole thing, and yet already at least the second about Mary's rubbish spy backstory... A plot that is surely only of interest to the kind of people who make YouTube videos called "John & Mary: Forever Love" featuring inexplicably silent clips of the characters looking whistful or smiling set to Dido, or some shit... You know, this kind of shit. Or This kind of shit. Or THIS kind of shit! I mean, what even is that shit!?? Who makes it!!??

Who cares. That's the audience now.

Didn't know Sherlock Fandom existed before this post, was much happier back then.

Kinda hate Mockney for bringing them to my attention and ruining my day.

When he gets annoyed with something, he really gets annoyed with it.

I don't really, I'm just good at seeming like I do.

I enjoyed a good 20 minutes of this ep, for example - after the cringey "tweeting whilst handwaving murder" opening, but before the spy stuff kicked in proper - I just found it distanced from what I enjoy from an episode of Sherlock, for the most part. I don't give a shit about Mary's spylife or John sort of cheating on a bus. SOLVE SOME CRIMES IN A CLEVER WAY, DAMMIT!!

Watched it last night and was totally underwhelmed. Bring back Basil Rathbone I say.

I sincerely hope that Mary is dead and doesn't make a miraculous comeback, she is detrimental to the show.

Also she is scruffy as feck.

 has anyone ever mentioned you're the Mark Kermode of the caf

I finally saw the Christmas special. I liked it, but didn't like the way they tried to tie it in with the present and the mind palace and all that. It should have been a one off episode in the Victorian era.

The endings of the last two episodes have been shockingly poor.

Actually, I think I enjoyed Jonathan Creek more over the Christmas period, as far as Holmes-ian homages go.

It's sad how the writers have miscomprehended what once made the show great.

They've both shown a somewhat out-of-character willingness to murder someone and not think twice about it afterwards, come to think of it.

I don't mind that too much.

The thing is, the two shows are called 'Sherlock' and 'Jonathan Creek'. The clue to what makes them enjoyable is in the fecking title.

Jonathan has had more side-kicks than I can recall, but the writers have never lost sight of the star of the show.

The writers of Sherlock might as well have renamed Mary as 'Poochie'.

Was disappointing. The best bit was the initial death investigation. The rest of it was seriously stupid. Turning all the characters (Sherlock, John, mycroft and even lestrade) into characters of a sitcom. Making fun of each other and cracking jokes
