Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Manchester United

Get used to it, Moyes has seen how Shakhtar is a tough place to go and is playing cautious.

He's been cautious ever since he took the job. This isn't a home and away tie where you're looking to prevent goals from scoring, it's the group stages where one point can separate 2nd from 3rd place in the group. I expected Kagawa to start with Rooney's absence.

All of the back four has been changed. That doesn't happen that often.

Can understand what he is going for but I don't like it. You don't need to play 3 cms and two wingers currently more known for their defensive contribution not their attacking contribution. Can't see why not either have nani wide using welbeck in the hole as we've seen before or not have kagawa and if it fellaini in the hole over kagawa then that's pretty sad. Yes kagawa hasn't been great but neither has fellaini and he's been fully fit and playing in a role he says is his best. This could have been a chance to play kagawa in his best role too.

Oh well. A team though that will work hard but as we've seen before you can't just been about work ethic, if there is little counter attacking threat then they will just keep coming back at you and only takes one mistake.

So, I see Moyes is not playing Kagawa who is currently the greatest player in the world, just above Nani who comes close 2nd. It doesn't matter that Nani played 2 games on trot vs. Liverpool and WBA and might be in plans for Sunderland away. It doesn't matter that Kagawa hasn't been that good except odd moments in a game, it doesn't matter that the 3 man midfield we had vs City when Cleverley came on looked like a good strategy against teams who are strong in midfield but hey ho, those two are the ones to pull us out of trouble just like that and must be played every game irrespective of opposition/need. Somebody must text Moyes that the best way to select lineup will be having a poll on caf.

Oh, i know that, but it's just classic Moyes.

Still refusing to play Kagawa in his preferred position I see. Christ what a waste of money that is turning out to be.

Just hope we're looking to find Fellaini to his feet rather than launching balls up to him from Vidic and Smalling

They are a very good team at home in the CL. We should be playing for a draw, considering our recent performances. Stop the bleeding, move on.

Hope RVP can pull something out.

I don't think I've ever been looking forward to a United match as little as I am right now. I just can't build up any excitement. I'm usually buzzing on match days, counting down the hours till kick off, but today I just can't muster up any excitement.

I think this line-up is more than enough to get a result but no Nani or Kagawa is disappointing to say the least. How are they ever going to build up form if they never get a run of games? In any case, let's hope it's a midfield 3 and not standard 4-4-1-1 with Fellaini behind Van Persie.

Defense deserved to be shafted after West Brom anyway, hope that's a kick in the arse for them.

Who do we think would have missed out if Rooney were available?

I think Welbeck or Cleverly

Bit unfortunate he decided to go with Smalling instead of Evans or Jones and that Valencia is picked before Nani.

For the rest it is a sensible lign up.

They might be unproven but they are highly rated and talented. And they are a club renown for how well they develop their south american players

We've got highly-rated youngsters who are sat at home watching this on the television. Youngsters can never be relied upon at the highest grade as they are not consistent enough. Shakhtar are struggling (comparatively) on the domestic front this season and it appears that their young and inexperienced squad isn't coping with the expectation placed upon them.

Shakhtar used to be a very difficult place to go but I reckon we're going there at exactly the right time; home team inexperienced and under pressure, we're going there with a very experienced side, and our lads will be desperate to set the record straight. Rooney's illness is a huge blow, but he looked tired at the weekend anyway.

I have a good feeling about this tonight. I think we'll enjoy a rather convincing win, by more than a single goal.

To be fair to Kagawa, he's had to play wide left which isn't his preferred position. He could have finally had the chance the play behind van Persie with Rooney out, which is why some on here are aggrieved.

I'd have preferred Kagawa instead of Cleverley because I think he deserves a chance playing in his natural position, but that aside I think it's a good lineup.

Could be good to see Kagawa come on for Cleverley in the second half when the game is stretched - think we'll nick this by the odd goal (heart over head)

Young is on the bench. He's just not in the starting XI, thank God.

Ooops guess I blocked his name out when I read the subs - guess he'll be on before Nani or Kagawa when we are searching for a goal then :)

I reckin its a very good line up, and that the negative vibes on here are more hysteria than thought out opinion

Come on ye reds!

It's an okay lineup, but can't help but feel we're set out to not lose, rather than win. Which is disappointing. Of course we could line up in a completely different way to the way I'm predicting.

Me too, usually can't wait to get home from work on CL days. I'm rarely ever pessimistic yet I've been convincing myself we won't win all day.

Think this is a big test for RVP. To be honest, this season he hasn't looked involved enough when up front alone. He could be pretty isolated tonight, we'll need him to keep making runs and offering support.

Well, plan might be to bring him on after hour mark, keeping things tight till then. Lot of big teams have lost against Shakhtar away recently, and if by going gung-ho we lose, it is not only the points we are losing but opponent is gaining.. cliche but important. If we draw this, it might turn out to be a very important point in the end.

That lineup really does show up what a dire lack of quality we currently have at our disposal.

I hope you're right. But it can go the other way and several of their talents announce themselves tonight

On paper it looks a good team. I like the idea of that 3 in midfield for hard away games.

Yes it would have been nice to see Kagawa, but it's becoming rather clear he is not in Moyes plans at all.

They have no leader right now but their coach is smart and they have the advantage as far as who is in worse shape coming into the game.
