ANDRÉ CRUZ
André Cruz was a Brazilian defender who played as libero or as regista in front of the defence. Outstanding at set pieces, although I already have another left footer for those. After three very good seasons at Napoli (individually, Napoli was a mess) he was Milan's choice to take over from the retiring Baresi.
Fabio Capello had already tried get him for Real the season before but Napoli hadn't accepted their bid. In fairness, I can see how Lorenzo Sanz wouldn't have been hellbent on it anyway as Capello wanted him to replace Hierro and that's probably when Sanz realised he had the wrong man for the Real job So much so, that months before the season finished Capello was already in talks with Inter and, as part of those, established he wanted André. Everything got agreed with Napoli and the player, but then Milan wanted Capello back.
Thus started one of the most bizarre of many transfer sagas involving the Milan clubs. Moratti had had his manager stolen so, at the very least he was taking his transfer target. He went one step further in approaching Luigi Simoni, who was also Nápoli's manager. Nápoli wasn't doing very well after a great start to the season so the Napoli President gave it for granted it was all down to Simoni already having his head at Inter and sacked him. Classic Italian club management comedy. The reserves coach got the job and a dressing room which was already complicated went into trumoil, Nápoli nosedived and narrowly missed on relegation after being second around Christmas.
So then you had Inter who had already agreed a deal and were pissed off with Milan, Napoli pissed off with Inter and wanting to renege on the deal, and Milan in their late 90s form with Adriano Galliani making his best Del Boy impersonation. Milan and Capello prevailed, even paying lower wages, as Cruz was enthused by the destiny of replacing his idol.
But let's hear from Baresi himself:
Unfortunately for Cruz, Milan was making dozens of transfers in and out that Summer, the team started badly as they gelled and he got injured in November (after scoring the equaliser in the derby) and was out for 5 months. By the next year, Capello was gone and Zaccheroni was in with his 3-4-3. He didn't want a libero, nor did he particularly want poor Roberto Ayala who had just signed so both ended up rather unused and eventually moved on.
Again, only ever get goal videos, but you can see him as libero arriving in the box for some.

But let's hear from Baresi himself:
Franco Baresi talking with Berlusconi while watching a training session said:He is great, alert and intelligent. As you expect from a Brazilian, he has his feet and knows how to use them.
Silvio Berlusconi: "Is he for Milan?"
Of course, a great player, a talent, I have always admired him, in Naples and Brazil, he was very good at the set-pieces, he scored them against me for Italy and also at Milan. I remember the goal with the national team in Bologna. He came on in place of Aldair, and immediately scored"
Silvio Berlusconi: "But how do you see him in defence?"
Very well, the agreement with Costacurta and the others seemed to me very good, he is not very fast but he uses his head, he moves well, he has a great game vision, he is very good when he disengages and goes up. He knows how to position himself and defend. In short, an innate sense of tactics.
