Sergio Ramos

He has matured into a wonderful player. He’ll go down in history for his clutch moments alone.

I usually agree with most of what you say but this is complete madness.

He's the best CB in world football. An absolute beast.
I don't think he's the best CB, but he's definitely the best player playing CB in the world right now

Hard to compare from an all time perspective. If he played in the 60s/70s he'd have spent the majority of his career in midfield. Indeed, when Sacchi signed him, he projected him to become a DM. Instead, football changed

The football fans of today would have criticized Beckenbauer for wandering around the field and leaving his defence exposed to counter attacks.

I don't understand how people don't rate Ramos

I think it's because we fans tend to tag players very rigidly after a long time and we tend to react negatively when those players show the skills that prove us wrong, or at least not as right as we thought we were.

Many years ago I was very critical of Ramos, but he's been way too good in recent seasons to quickly change my mind.

Do some guys really think he's the undisputed GOAT defender??

Real Madrid have conceded something 22 out of 25 games in the calender 2018, i.e. just 3 clean sheets.

When people call Messi GOAT, I think there's some merit to it (although there's an argument against it IMO), when people say Ramos is the GOAT CB to me that just SCREAMS recency bias.
Not GOAT, but he is one of best CBs of all time. Or better saying, one of the best players playing in CB position ever.

I have him ahead of Rio, Vidic, Terry, Cannavaro and possibly Nesta. He wasn't as good a defender as any of them, but modern football is much more than being great at one skill. His leadership, charisma, ball playing abilities and most importantly, goal scoring ability in clutch moments is second to no CB I have seen.

FTFY

Real not winning titles is all down to ramos - got it.

How the feck did you get that from what I said?

There are a lot of posters in this thread who I think are very sensible and knowledgeable on the topic of football. And the fact that so many of these posters rate Ramos as World Class is a paradox I've not figured out yet. There simply has to be something I'm missing.

I guess you missed his brace in munich, his goals in lisbon and milan, his brace in Naples, hos overall performances in the big CL knockout games over the last 5 seasons

Rating him as a defender.

As a score of important goals I acknowledge he has a nice streak going but there's way more to a player than that.

I think the fact the bold has nothing to do with his primary job as a defender probably has something to do with it.

Personally I don't think Ramos is a particularly great defender per se but his other attributes (goal threat and leadership among them) make him a great footballer. If someone focuses primarily on his basic defending skills though then I can definitely see why they would say he was overrated.

....yes, so why don't you think he's world class exactly? I mean, you just made my point

It takes more than a good streak of scoring in those games to be world class. To be world class you have to be ace in damned near everything you do. Including your primary job as a player.

Simply speaking, if you are a defender, I could give a feck about how many goals you score.

I have a more detailed breakdown of how I rate Ramos as a defender in this thread some pages back.

The guy had as much of an impact on real madrid winning 4 CL in 5 years as Cristiano Ronaldo. And if you can't see that, there's no point going on

Is is easy mate. You just know nothing about football, have been telling you for years.

@adexkola

let me know the next time you see someone take the ball by ramos easily. massively intelligent defender these days, positioning and reading of the game is flawless at times.

If he were playing in an Atlético Madrid system instead of one where the front 6 don't offer much protection he'd be seen as the best CB unquestionably. But because of his personality and style he'll be debatable.

He's a great player and maybe if you don't rate him at all when so many people, players and managers do, maybe you should step back and try to see what other people are talking about.

Love Ramos.

Wish some of our squad had his attitude.

Griezmann didn't say he was on par with Ronaldo and Messi though. The quote got horribly taken out of context, as do most football related quotes these days.

Look at him smiling and laughing. He's showing no remorse for attempting to take Salah's life in the CL final. Or leaving Karius with brain damage.

There are two kind of players today. The ones who think they are LeBron and Steph Curry combined (Griezmann, Neymar, Pogba, Boateng) and the ones who don‘t have an opinion and never say anything interesting to not damage their brand (German NT players mostly).

Ramos is in his own niche and one of the few interesting characters left.

Compare the arrogance and charisma of Ramos to our shower of shite at the back and it's not hard to see why they have been so successful and us not

Savage comment.

That was brutal. I don't know if Griezmann's views were misquoted, but there is almost no wiggle room for him left to answer to this without coming off as a twat. Only thing he could say is that of course he's not as good as Messi or Ronaldo and that he didn't say that. Griezmann might never win a Ballon d' Or. He's not even the best player in his club (Obak and Godin) or national team (Kanté, Mbappé, Varane and yes even Pogba have a word in that debate).

Ramos is one of the few players left that stays what's on his mind and can get away with it.

He's the kind of cnut you'd warm to. He can mock Pique one week and play with him the next like nothing happened.

Truly devasted he's playing like a complete and utter mug at the moment. :D

This is probably the time Man. United will come in with a 50m bid for him.

Been a disaster since the WC.

He'll probably return to his best as soon as a new manager arrives. The guy has won four La Liga's, four Champions League's, two Euro's and one World Cup... he'll manage.
