Logical, but you're forgetting football isn't always logical.

Who thought we'd get VP or Mata. Who thought Wenger could possibly turn down Fabregas? Who could possibly believe we turned down Mourinho for Moyes?

Players have the power these days. If Ramos makes enough fuss, it can happen.
It obviously depends on what extent we actually want him, and what extent we're doing it to hijack the De Gea situation.

Valdez probably doesn't make any difference to anything. He was never going to be our first choice. It smacked of a move to give the impression we have a keeper handy, so aren't desperate to buy anyone else. But he was never going to be a contender.

Indeed. If Ramos has been offered two or three times his current salary then at 29, with one big move left he might be very keen.

Puts Madrid in a tough spot if he's not going to re-sign and wants to go it's not easy.

De Gea may be in the same position here, but will get his move next year so may very well give another season his best. Ramos might only get a mega contract offer once.

I'm quite excited about the idea of Ramos and Otamendi coming in. That'd really set Smalling and Jones a challenge. They know they're rated, and no one wants them out, and they'll get some games, but they'll have to step it up a notch to feature heavily. Sounds perfect to me.

Seems to me that Ferdy and Vidic winding down pushed them into the team, rather than them particularly stepping up. I still think both have got something big to offer, in a way I never overly felt with Evans, but two big hitters coming in would be a real wakeup.
Some respond to the challenge, some don't.
Either way it means we get a stronger first team.

What have a missed? Are we back on?

After Schweinsteiger was confirmed I have not had anything to muppet over. I have been cold turkey since Monday!

The only way I see this going through is if De Gea heads in the opposite direction.

On one hand I'd rather us keep De Gea and buy Otamendi. On the other hand, De Gea will likely end up leaving on a free next summer or even if he signs a new contract he'll likely want to leave in a few years again anyway so we might as well get a world class player in the deal now.

If I had the choice of keeping De Gea for a year and getting Otamendi but missing out on Ramos, or sell them De Gea now, and get Ramos but not Otamendi, I would sell him now.

I know Otamendi is probably a better long term signing, and any keeper we sign will be a downgrade from De Gea, but I really fancy LVG winning the league this or next season if we get Ramos, a striker and a decent gk.

Is this an unpopular opinion or would anyone else prefer this scenario?

Not an unpopular opinion at all man, but i'd prefer to keep Dave & let him see out his contract & sign both Ramos & Otamendi. F*ck Real

I'd agree. Having a top class centre-back partnership is, for me the foundation of a good side. With a good holding midfield player in-front and plenty of options in midfield we'd look a very solid side, with plenty of depth as well.

I feel that this fecker is all we need to have a starting 11 that can compete with everyone out there.

If we have the possibility to swap him for DDG, we should be all over it. There are a lot of good GK's out there(maybe not as good as DDG, but they can still do the job), but zero good CB's that can play ball and be leaders in the same time.

Rather keep de gea. A year is a long time in football so we might just keep him permanently. Otamendi is as good as Ramos, I'm not fussed who we get.

I think Ramos would perhaps add more to the team. He's the full package, proven winner, leader, great going forward, scores goals.
I admit I haven't watched Otamendi as much as I would like but my understanding is he's better than Ramos defensively.

Could we get both please? About time we had an Argie who really was great for us.. Veron, Heinze, Tevez never fulfilled their potential or fecked us over. Jury is still out on Di Maria though!

I asked him to come to United and he gave a thumbs up.

Woody needs to give me a cut

Say whaaaat??

Well played sir. And you sure the thumps up was for you and not for the reaction from the Real fans

Swapping De Gea for him at this point would be a fantastic deal. We won't keep De Gea past 2016 and Ramos will easily play for another 3-4 years at a very high level and will strengthen what seems to be our weakest formation.

Kudos, great story.

In my younger days I went into the Newcastle United club shop at St James Park wearing a Utd shirt a few months after the 4-0 charity shield drubbing (luckily before the 5-0) and Philippe Albert was there (who towered over me) and I asked him what it was like to be beaten up by Eric Cantona (I recall Cantona grabbing him by the neck or similar around then)...to his credit he just smiled, patted me on the back and moves on.

Re the above; a summary of what's "known" or a continuation of Ramos' brother who is the one leaking this to Sid Lowe and Graham Hunter is again using British media as an over eager political pawn to get that big contract for Ramos.

Let's be honest, he's not gonna be leaving for footballing reasons this season. Real are at the peak and while Utd are driving towards, we're not back there yet.

Our only hope is there is a cultural and personal challenge he now wants + more money. 3 or 4 years learning English and being at the biggest English speaking football club and worldwide brand gets him a huge end of career gig in MLS with easy transition for him and his TV presenter partner - she confirmed they've been having English lessons since Jan.

This one will drag on and I'm really not sure we'll get what we're being told we're after.

I think any move for a centre half, Otamendi or otherwise, will be on hold until we're satisfied this one is dead and buried.

Need all the Aussie posters on here to carry on Cooksen's good work.

I expect @Pexbo to be at Madrid's next game asking him the same question.

The way you phrase this is almost as though you're saying his end goal is the MLS and United are the stepping stone, which is obviously laughable.

He clearly wants a new challenge in the most popular sports league in the world.

I'm suprised people are so sceptical that he wants to join us. Same as Schweinsteiger.

Not leaving Real for footballing reasons?

Ill give you one football reason; they sacked Ancelotti who Ramos, Casillas and Ronaldo all hugely believed in and replaced him with FSW. By all accounts it's mire about that than money
