Honestly, I don't understand the chronology, he apparently agreed with United but then Bayern and Barcelona came knocking, so he asked for more and then no one wanted him anymore, I suspect that he snubbed us for Barcelona or Bayern. Also no one found an agreement with Dortmund.

As I remember it SAF said at a press conference that Rooney was "adamant and wanted to leave". To me that seems a bit more than stalling at signing a contract. I think, from what little I know, that Rooney wanted to get more money out of his contract and/or was carried away by his agent. In his book SAF insinuates that Rooney showed signs of regret towards the end of that dispute. Again according to his book, Rooney wanted to apologise to SAF but SAF said he should apologise to the fans instead.
To me Rooney wanted more money, who has not done what is within their means to do that in a contract situation? The dispute was solved and everybody moved on. If so, the fact that Rooney played it a bit ugly for earning more money doesn't mean he is not the most suitable player for captaincy now.
