Couldn't we just pay €100 million for Ramos, and then get RM to pay €90 million for DDG, they get a world record fee for a defender, and us a world record for a keeper.

We can both then go away with our chests puffed out feeling like biggest clubs in the world (which we are), jobs a goodun.

I suppose the only stumbling block is the fact we have a player that is desperate to go to Madrid, and they have a player that is desperate for a new contract, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

Putting aside the stats for one moment, Ramos is dirty cnut, it's pretty shocking how few games our defenders actually played last season.

Aerial duals won would be a more interesting stat as a percentage of overall aerial duals challenged for.

The only people who would win there would be the agents, who would get a bigger cut as a result.

why?

Madrid loves the hassle and the noise. It's well worth it. They will be getting one of the best keepers for peanuts.
And unfortunately they hold all the cards - he wants to go there because it's his home, only one year left on his contract and it's not like we can create a competition for signing him as it's unlikely that DDG will go anywhere else.
So peanuts like we paid for RvP in the same situation?
edit.
For a much older player.

Voted "please God no" just because.

He's a highly unlikeable player.

That said, I agree with the more reasonable assessments of him in this thread, i.e. he is not a great player by any stretch but actually one of the best CBs around these days.

I don't really understand this point of view. You could have said the same about many of our great players: Keane, G Neville, RVN....

Sure. If I hadn't been a United fan I probably would've found plenty to dislike about those players too. But I am a United fan, so there it is. It's not supposed to be rational, is it?

No but surely the end result for any fan is a better and more successful team?

Know what you mean. There's a big difference between a player becoming despised in the course of serving the club, and signing a player that you already despise!

In fairness, there is a massive lack of top end defenders, not everyone we have can be rio and vidic.

Its not has if this has happened the past year, the current set have not improved much physically let alone has players, smalling has slightly improved, and that is not by much. And in jones's case physically and and has a defender he has not improved. For evans, he has over stayed his welcome, and when we look further down the bracket, McNair and Blackett are just grim options

Yeah but say he's three games in and making all the difference. That'd all be forgotten in a heartbeat!

It raises an interesting question though: United signings that Utd fans have previously hated.

Can't think of too many off the top of my head....Cantona?

Hm. Yes. But if we throw all irrational bias out the window, what's left? Stats?

What about Suarez, then - to make an exaggerated point? That's arguably not even irrational bias.

Cantona is an interesting point. I do recall having misgivings about buying a player who had made an impact for Leeds. But Cantona certainly wasn't a Leeds player, as such - there was plenty of mitigating circumstances there. Plus, the "we don't do business with them" factor wasn't quite the same as it would have been if he had been a Liverpool player. The latter is pretty unique, actually - wasn't ever the same taboo there with either Leeds or City.

I was a firm disliker of Fellaini, mainly because of his elbows. I also wasn't too fond of Teddy Sheringham before he signed. Couldn't tell you why though.
I'd say there were a few who hated Michael Owen.

Just watched Sky Sports News and Sky Sources (yes I know) say that Ramos has told Madrid he wants to leave and join United.

I saw that:

I forgot my headphones this morning, so I can't hear it.
What exactly does he say about Ramos wanting to leave? agent conversation or what?

Alan Smith seems a better example from Leeds

Aye - Leeds youth player and had never played for anyone else. But even him wasn't all that controversial. It's not the same thing as with Liverpool - for some reason. We've bought several players from Leeds who qualify as "United Legends", going back to the 70s.

Funny thing, really. To me Leeds is probably above City in terms of "hatred" and rivalry, historically speaking, but the "don't buy from 'em" taboo simply isn't the same as with Liverpool for some reason. We've sold several fan favourites to Leeds as well, and it's basically the same thing there: Nowhere near the added animosity a transfer to Liverpool would've meant.

They said he was a step closer but also that our bid had been rejected and that Real want to keep him. So I really don't know how they came to that conclusion.

Just watched that and damn, didnt realise West Ham's season kicked off tonight.

It's not the only consideration. I don't want Mourinho anywhere near the club and never have.

I know he could bring us success but I still don't want him anywhere near my club.

You can carry on being irrational while you win though ;)

Suarez....you have kind of got me there. Over my dead body!

Is there a way to see where those fouls were committed? I would guess they're pretty high up the field just breaking up counter attacks and dealing with long balls. Madrid defended with a high line in 95% of their games.

The Ramos "step closer" is just rehashing everything that has been said all week. Today has been a time travel type of day, what with all the Schneiderlin bid and Ramos asking to leave Madrid.

Aye, that's true.

Most of what we've been doing for the past couple of decades...or more...has been luxury. In that sense, given the very real challenge of getting United back to where we were under Fergie, I'm certainly willing to let certain principles slide.

With Ramos, in particular, I guess it's mainly a question of him not being all that. Because he really isn't. He's one of the best CBs available but that isn't saying a lot given the pool. Which means there's more room for introducing irrational dislike, if you will.

If we had been in for a similarly cnutish central midfielder of similar age and similar repute, from the same team, I would've been far less critical.

If this is an elongated contract power play (which I still think it is), what public statement or move have they left to make?

It feels like barring a transfer request, all the moving and shaking has been done. It's the quiet time before an announcement.

I just read an article(in a web called soymadridista) saying that United did an offer of 50m€,however Madrid board is surprised since the contact was done through a lawyer office from London but not directly, what they thought that should be the normal since the relationships between clubs are good. Now they want a better offer,70/80 m€, to talk directly with Woodward and some public statement from Ramos

If he is supposed to return to training next Monday (?), then I'd guess we'll be finding out about his future very soon.

They expect the relationship to be good and yet bid a very small amount for de gea?

I have a feeling that Ramos will be a bonus signing and that we have already signed Otamendi.
