Couldn't disagree more, to get Ramos would be massive for us, a proper world class CB, with the bonus of taking a RM player they don't want to sell, almost a first in recent times anyway.

I have my doubts we'll get him, but if we do i'd be very happy with it.

Craziness. Our defence has been terrible for the last couple of seasons & we're possibly signing the most celebrated 29 defender there has ever been (name anyone else that had 128 caps, a world cup, 2 euros & a champions league by the time they were 29).

Definitely not. I was initially skeptical but the more I think of it the more of a triumph this would be - depriving Madrid of one of the best CBs in the world.

Though I'd probably agree with this.

Desailly is the closest I could come up with

I meant CB initially but there probably aren't too many player of any position that can match that.
The names mentioned (Desailly, Thuram, Cafu, Beckenbauer) only highlight how ridiculous it is that same people don't recognise how big this signing could be. I know he played in a great team but so did the others mentioned & he's a reason that they were a great a team.

Personally, I still don't think it will happen but even if we paid £45-55mil for him it would be worth it as he'll still likely be a top player for the next five years at least.

wow! This transfer thread has died on it's arse!

This thing was unstoppable a couple of days ago, calm before the storm or dead in the water.

Where's Woody?

Either he's holed up in some underground bunker with the agents of Schneiderlin, Ramos, Coleman and Scvhweinsteiger, making ready to emerge with a mega-announcement in the next day or so....

Or

He's off on his hols, having sealed the Jones and Young extensions, and released Nani. Blissfully unaware of the important thing he was supposed to be doing.

Woody and LVG both said they wanted their business done early, the windows been open now for nearly 15 hours, worrying times ahead.

I'm not sure it was a good idea to say that. I don't understand what possible advantage there is to going public with that. Surely everyone would prefer to get their business done early if possible?

Why shouldnt he say what he wants? If he cant do it that's another story but he prefers getting deals done early.

There have been plenty more talented CB's in my lifetime with far less honours, I judge by my eyes rather than a CV

Baresi and Costacurta were superior but short of a world cup, Campbell would be another, im at work so dont have time to setup a list but you cant go on CV alone.

It puts unnecessary pressure on himself and may make clubs he's negotiating with feel they're in a stronger negotiating position with time on their side. Especially if certain types of impatient fans start to turn on Woody, which some already have. I work with one such fan who's somehow genuinely pissed off, as if he blames Woody for not keeping his word.
He's in the minority I know, but it seems to me there were only downsides to saying that and no upsides. Not that it's a big deal.

You are talking about a different era. That was when Sharp electronics were our kit sponsors.

Baresi won the World Cup in 1982.

Would Cafu be close?

Cafu was extremely overrated in my opinion. I remember his career, and generally where his reputation was for the most part. It wasn't until his early 30's if I'm not mistaken after a WC and a move from Roma to Milan which increased his profile that he began to be lauded to the level he was, and then managed to retire as apparently one of the greatest right-backs ever.

Zanetti doesn't get his dues, perhaps down to no World Cup or something, but he was a far better right-back than Cafu for me.

I dont think Woody would even realize some fans on internet or whatever turned on him. Football fans are fickle and sometimes they're like kids who cant wait for new toys.
Also, I dont agree LVG has put pressure on him by his comments, I think he just said what he prefers.

When I was a kid reputation was (as I recall) that Cafu was the world's best right back and Carlos the best left back. This was well before the Milan move too. Although it's probably true that this isn't the case it goes to show that he was highly regarded before this, probably more to do with his Brazil career though I'd say. I'd agree Zanetti was a great player and does seem somewhat underrated in comparison to Cafu.

Carlos was always overrated imo, Cafu was genuinely the world's best right back. An outstanding player.

I remember when Cafu was going to sign for Garforth Town (near Leeds) but it fell through, that would have been weird, saying that Gazza was manager there for about 12 hours too.

I love that team BBC envisioned

thats a worthy title contending squad if rooney has a great season

The BBC have gone full muppet with that defence, I'll definitely take it though. I don't see Ramos wanting to play RB either really if he has any say in it. Seems like everything suggests its on.

Full muppet indeed... but thats a midfielders wet dream of a defense so much good passers in there. Though i would swap rojo with Smalling

There's something really fishy going on behind the scenes with all this now after reading those comments from Calderon.

Hmmmm....

Calderon talks rubbish all the time. Don't think we should read too much into what he says to be honest.

Carlos got the reputation because of that free kick. Else he was really average. Like most Brazilian full backs 90% attack and 10% defend

That's not true. Carlos was a proper wing back. People just underrate his defense sometimes because he was just so good in attack.
