Materazzi's insight from the Italian end of things is probably worth listening to, but I doubt he knows the details of the buying club (United or someone else), or indeed whether we'd need to sell before we purchase. Having said that, if Savic really is on the way out, it's only gonna be between us, Real and PSG. And I don't think he'd fit the possession based style of the other two.

Looks good to me in a diamond, plenty creativity and enough bodies to cancel the running needed defensively. We’d need two good fullbacks and this would suit Sanchez more (and Martial if staying). So looks a possibility as if Jose doesn’t think our wide attackers are top drawer or he can’t sign better then he has to find another way. Maybe Fred and SMS are available so rather than wait and hope player x y z becomes available.

The only recent stories I can see are those claiming we'll sell Pogba to get SMS. So it's not on.
If Mourinho goes for Bale (especially after those comments) and not Milinkovic-Savic, it is absolutely a sackable offense.

Can't see us getting, both Savic and Fred. If we do, then with Matic and Pogba expected to start, it would mean leaving one of them on the bench.

Bale is a crock. SMS is good but we've already got Pogba. What we need is a top quality RW who can play week in week out.
I’d be delighted with either of Bale or SMS. A fit Bale for me is still the best right attacker in the premiership if he was here. Something we are sorely lacking. Sign him up and buy Coleman (cheapish buy) to overlap him. Something we should have done at least 3-4 seasons ago was to sort out this flank.
If we get Fred and SMS then diamond formation it is, no way are we selling Pogba at this stage unless PSG go OTT or we swap with another superstar (potential) as these guys are getting rarer as more clubs can afford to stock pile them. I suggest we keep building our team as we really need a bit quality out there.
Our RW has been shit for years. It should be the number 1 priority. Can Sergej play as a RW?
Think it would be more of a diamond if we signed him with SMS and Pogba possibly rotating during games. He looks a very good player and a great age so I’m all for it. The more quality we have the better plus it sends out a message to Pogba and the rest of our (top) players that says play well or you’re benched as we have got a good squad to pick from. Not something we can claim just now in any position apart from GKs and left wing.
On the flip side I totally agree with you about right wing and Jose may go this route with a 433 but then I cannot see us signing both SMS and Fred for prices quoted unless on right wing it’s a player like Willian for around £30-40m mark and we sell as well. As we still need at least a left back and we have a lack of quality (although numbers) at right back. Big holes to fill and our budget although large is not bottomless like City I’m afraid.

Im certain SMS can play in the hole ahead of Pogba.
So lets say we bring Bale in. He comes here, he plays 40% of our games (we all know how crocks work with us) and then in 3-4 years time we'll have to start thinking replacing him, Valencia, Young, Matic, Smalling and Rojo. On SMS we'll have Pogba and him stepping on each other feet. We will of course be playing them both as they are 80m+. However that midfield won't work and we'll end up pretty much in the same crap we're now.
Lets bring players who are in a physical situation to do well with us and lets also bring the players we need.
Pogba would struggle in a deeper role and SMS is more comfortable as the most advanced option in a 3 men CM. I'd rather see us get Fabinho then him.

But isn't that just wasting Pogba? We want him closer to the goal, not further away from it.

Your other points with Rojo Valencia Young and Matic. Apart from Matic I can see these 3 other guys not getting a look in next season and these guys playing less than 40% of games. Smalling has done well this season and is younger. If we signed SMS or/and Fred we are already in a position we can rest Matic a bit more or replace him completely. I think Matic has at least another 3 years in him anyway so moot point really imo.
